A dissertation subnitted to the Faculty of Divinity in the University of Glasgow as a requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. John Willison (1680-1750) was a leading Evangelical in the Church of Scotland, whose prolific writing had a pronounced sacramental emphasis, at a time when the Lord's Supper was infrequently celebrated. The thesis aims to examine his sacramental theology and practice. ChaDter pae reconstructs his 'roots1 and considers the influence of family, home church and university on his thinking. Ministries at Brechin and Dundee are outlined and his publications are placed in context, Chapkcfrur examines his adherence to the federal scheme of theology. Villison is shown to identify three covenants, which he understands as having a contractual basis. Consideration is given to his stance on the Marrow Controversy, and to areas of agreement and disagreement with the Harrow men. ChaDter three examines his sacramental theology which is based on that of the Westminster Confession. His adherence to federalism is shown to result in his assertion that the sacrament is not a 'converting ordinance', his emphasis that it is a seal of the believer's faith and a badge of Christian profession, and his rigorous 'fencing' of the table. Consideration is also given to his positive stress on the sacrament as a means of grace, and to his teaching on the 'real presence1 of Christ, ChaDter four analyses the form, style and content of Willison's preaching, and his aversion to that of the Moderates. His sacramental sermons, prayers, 'fencing' of the table and table addresses are examined and compared=qith those of contemporaries .. '. , from both parties. .. , ChagkL fAxc considers his catechetical material and practice and comparison is made with the work of others, Particular attention is given to his practice of admitting communicants, and it is shown that while Villison objected to the Episcopalian rite of confirmation, he believed, nevertheless, in a distinctive form of admission which involved a 'renewal of baptismal engagements'. ChnDter six examines the issue of infrequent celebration in the Church of Scotland, Willison' s desire for change, his arguments for greater frequency, and his own practice. His influence on later pamphleteers is traced, as is their realisation of the truth of his assertion that greater frequency would only be achieved through changes to the customary sacramental 'season'. ChagkL seven makes an assessment of Willison and his work, showing him as a typical Evangelical of the eighteenth century who had a measure of broadmindedness, but no latitude in theological outlook, The consequences of his theological stance and its effect on his sacramental theology and practice are considered. Villison is also shown to differ from his contemporaries in his demand for a more frequent celebration of the Lord's Supper, and in his attempts to promote it. A conclusion is then made on Willison's significance. The author submits that the study contributes to scholarship for two reasons. Firstly, no work exclusively on Willison's sacramental material has been undertaken hitherto. Secondly, the issue of frequency of celebration is a continuing debate in the Church of Scotland, and, since some Evangelicals today express a viewpoint which is diametrically opposed to Willison's, the thesis has particular relevance, Title page.     MJT 10 (1999) 239-257 THE MARROW CONTROVERSY: A DEFENSE OF GRACE AND THE FREE OFFER OF THE GOSPEL by Joseph H. Hall Introduction THE PRISTINE ORTHODOXY of the Scottish Reformation had begun to wane by 1700. This was due in part to the residual influence of the Englishman Richard Baxter’s theology. Baxter (1615-1691), an Amyraldian, conceived of Christ’s death as a work of universal redemption, penal and vicarious but not strictly speaking substitutionary. For Baxter, God offers grace to sinners by introducing the “new law” of repentance and faith. Consequently when penitent sinners “obey” this new law, they obtain a personal saving righteousness. Effectual calling induces such obedience and preserving grace sustains it. This doctrine, known as “Neonomianism,” reflected Amyraldian teaching, with Arminian “new law” teaching as an addendum. The legalistic dimensions of Baxter’s Amyraldianism, along with the increasing influence of Laudian hierarchism,1 brought on 1William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury under Charles I of England, imposed on England, and sought to impose on Scotland, high church Anglicanism during the 1630s. The Scots fiercely and successfully resisted English uniformitarianism under Charles I only to have it re-imposed upon them after the restoration of Charles II. 240 • MID-AMERICA JOURNAL OF THEOLOGY by the Act of Union of 1707,2 made England dominant in both Church and State in Scotland. Added to this was the reintroduction of the abuses of patronage into the Scottish Kirk.3 These factors all contributed to the waning of vigorous, well- balanced Calvinism wherein the warmth of Scotland’s earlier Calvinism, with all its biblical and ecclesiastical integrity, gave way increasingly to doctrinal and spiritual indifference or “moderatism.” Hence those called moderates were those who opposed Reformation doctrine.

As the historian of such great occasions puts it, ‘Sacramental [ie Holy Communion] occasions in Scotland were great festivals, an engaging combination of holy day and holiday’, held over a number of days, drawing people from the surrounding area to hear a number of preachers. Robert Burns composed one of his most famous poems about them, entitled ‘The Holy Fair’ (Schmidt 1989, 3).Consequently, she entered into correspondence with him in January 1793, identifying White as the person purposed by God to share in a divine commission to prepare a righteous people for the second coming of Christ. Buchan had believed she was the recipient of special insights from God from as early as 1774, but she had received little encouragement from the ministers she had approached to share her ‘mind’ (Divine Dictionary, 79). The spiritual mantle proffered by Buchan was willingly taken up by White. When challenged over erroneous doctrine by the managers and elders of the Relief Church there within three weeks of Buchan’s arrival in Irvine in March 1783, White refused to desist from preaching both publicly and privately Buchan’s claim of a divine commission to prepare for the second coming of Christ.

He first married Isabella Cranston, and afterwards Agnes Fletcher. Their daughter Erskine married John Croumbie, eldest son of Samuel Brown. John Croumbie and Erskine's 4th child married Mary Solomon, 3rd child of Henry Solomon and Julia Middleton. Out of this alliance Rachel, their 2nd child, married James Dick, and their eldest daughter Margaret (Mollie) first married Stanley F. Smith, and later L. Marriott-Earle. Janet, their 2nd daughter, married Archibald McGregor, whose eldest daughter Sheila married Stewart Truswell. Pieter Hugo Naude's connection with the Brown family arose because of his marriage to Julia Mary, 3rd child of John Brown and Erskine Brown. However, it raises the question of whether Craig’s undoubted reputation as a writer has led to a misleading assessment of his prominence as an advocate in the legal profession of his day. A. INTRODUCTION Thomas Craig (c 1538–1608) is best known to posterity as the author of Jus Feudale and as a commissioner appointed by James VI in 1604 to discuss the possi- bility of a union of laws between England and Scotland.1 Following from the latter enterprise, he was the author of De Hominio (published in 1695 as Scotland”s * Lecturer in Law, University of Glasgow.   • Scotland ; Picturesque, Historical, Descriptive
    ITritjr mttr its Rrimtjr. HE sea-port and town of Leith, anciently Inverleith, 1 at the debouch of the Water of Leith stream, which flows through the harbour into the Frith of Forth, is nearly a mile and a half from Edinburgh. The town is a curious motley group of narrow streets, in which are numbers of old tenements, the architecture and interiors of which indicate the affluence of the former possessors. Although a place of considerable antiquity, and mentioned as Inverleith in David I.'s charter of Holyrood, the commercial importance of Leith dates only from the fourteenth century, when the magistrates of Edinburgh obtained a grant of the harbour and mills from King Robert Bruce for the annual payment of fifty-two merks. This appears to have been one of the first of those transactions by which the citizens of Edinburgh acquired the complete mastery over Leith, and they are accused of exercising their power in a most tyrannical manner. So completely, indeed, were the Town-Council of Edinburgh resolved to enslave Leith, that the inhabitants were not allowed to have shops or warehouses, and even inns or hostelries could be arbitrarily prohibited. This power was obtained in a very peculiar maimer. In 1398 and 1413, Sir Robert Logan of Restalrig, then superior of the town, disputed the right of the Edinburgh corporation to the use of the banks of the Water of Leith, and the property was purchased from him at a considerable sum. This avaricious baron afterwards caused an infinitude of trouble to the Town-Council on legal points, but they were resolved to be the absolute rulers of Leith at any cost; and they advanced from their treasury a large sum, for which Logan granted a bond, placing Leith completely at the disposal of the Edinburgh Corporation, and retaining all the before-mentioned restrictions.
