2013-14 THE LINCOLN UNIVERSITY SEASON PREVIEW

In an historical 2012-13 season, the Lincoln University’s men’s basketball team had its first winning season in nearly ten years and their first ever as an NCAA Division II member institution with an overall record of 17-10. The defending CIAA Northern Division Champions posted an 8-2 divisional record and led the CIAA conference holding their opponents to 64.6 points per game.

Lincoln’s Kenny Sharpe was named to the 2012-13 All-CIAA First Team, while guard Derrick Washington capped his season with All- CIAA Tournament honors. Derrick Washington will lead the attack along with the Jackson siblings George and Justin after the gradu- ation of senior guard Kenny Sharpe. Eight returners will mix with four newcomers as the Lions prepare for their 2013-14 CIAA Championship run.

Entering his fourth season at Lincoln University, Head Coach John Hill is focused on enhancing the Lions’ overall defensive style of play. Lincoln averaged 23.0 defensive rebounds per game (10th), 6.6 steals per game (7th), and 2.7 blocks per game (11th). The Lions look to become a more aggressive team under the basket with an increased rebounding effort.

Coach Hill looks to boost his Lions’ overall scoring average from 66.1 points per game last season to an anticipated 76.0 points per game this season. Point guard George Jackson (junior/ Baltimore, MD) returns as the Lions top scorer after averaging 13.4 points per game. Jackson also led the team in made three-pointers (43), minutes per game (29.8), assists (2.4), and steals (1.7).

Derrick Washington (senior/Washington, DC) will be vital to the scoring improvement after recording double-figures in 16 games last season including a season-best of 26 points versus Elizabeth City State.

Power forward Will Cole (junior/ Newark, NJ) ranked third in the conference in offensive rebounds averaging 3.0 and eighth overall in total rebounds grabbing 164 on the season. He also ranked fourth in the conference with a field goal percentage of 61.2 and posted four double-doubles last season.

This season, the Lions have really tried to improve their strength of schedule in playing three Northeastern-10 opponents, four PSAC opponents, and three CACC opponents. “The goal is to improve upon our program’s overall body of work in competing against some of the best programs in three different regions,” commented Coach Hill. “We are excited about the challenge and looking forward to raising the bar this season.”

John Hill enters his fourth year as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach of The Lincoln Uni- versity Lions. Boasting ten years of Division II head-coaching experience and another 13 seasons as an assistant, Hill has an established ability to build programs into conference and national contenders.

In his first year at Lincoln, he transformed Denzel Mooney into an All-Central Intercolle- giate Athletic Association player. Defensively, the Lions were among the most consistent in the nation.

During his second year, Hill guided the Lions to seven more wins than the previous year as Lincoln defeated Fisk and Bowie State (Nationally ranked 9th in the country) to capture the Fresh Coast Classic Championship - the school’s first NCAA Division II basketball title. Den- zel Mooney continued to be one of the top players in the CIAA as he was named to the All -CIAA Team.

In just a matter of three seasons, Hill has managed to turn The Lincoln University Men’s Basketball Team from one of the lowest seeded teams in the CIAA (2010-2011) to North- ern Divisional Champions for the 2012-2013 season. He has propelled Lincoln basketball to it first winning season (17-10) in over ten years, marking the program’s first North Divi- sional Championship since becoming a NCAA Division II member.
