Hence, in looking at the low performance levels of Black students today, the question becomes, how do the descendants of those who created writing, mathematics, and science; and then in the face of episodic disruptions laid their lives on the line to read, write, and built public schools, Sabbath schools, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities, close the excellence gap between their actual performance and deeply rooted cultural expectations? The present study reviews the essential questions and proposed solutions for closing the excellence gap that have been offered by previous generations of scholars. Africana Studies methodological framing questions were used to examine the long-view experiences of African people as well as a three tier critical ethnographic research methods approach. The study revealed that Black students gained a level of excellence in the face of disruption through: (1) Collective Training, (2) Spiritual and Moral Balance, and (3) Content Mastery. The prerequisite for sustaining educational excellence was found to be in the individual roles female and male representatives play as ii the primary educators of Black children. Secondly, nurturing a sense of identity through a spiritual understanding of social order and moral responsibility to the collective is also a requirement. Nevertheless, what unites and emerges as the chief element is content mastery. The ability to retain and keep content through listening and reading; and present a level of mastery on that information through speaking, writing and action to solve problems, completes the reciprocal process of educational excellence. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To the Creator, who goes by many names, Sun, Ra, Onyame, A dani wa ye, NGAI… “Now to Him who is able to keep me from stumbling. Crowther, Adams State University, USA Keith Harper, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, USA This paper explores the race and religion during the Progressive Era by examining the relationships between Richard Henry Boyd and Elias Camp Morris, two leading members of the nascent National Baptist Convention, an African American denomination, and Boyd’s relationship with James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the white Southern Baptist Convention. Their interactions highlight the contours and limitations of ecclesiastical activity within and across the color line in the early 20th Century. Keywords: National Baptist Convention, race, African-Americans On February 2, 1916, Richard Henry Boyd, the African American publishing dynamo and entrepreneur, sent a twelve page epistle to James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Sunday School Board, the nascent, but soon-to-be mammoth publishing arm of white missionary Baptists in the South. The professional form of the missive only superficially masked the emotion and message of what Boyd revealed to his white counterpart. The National Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest organization of African American Baptists, was in the throes of schism. In writing this letter, Boyd engaged in a ―heart to heart talk‖ with Frost ―over this matter,‖ whereby he offered his version of recent events (Boyd, February 2, 1916).

    PG-266661-19 African American Research Library and Cultural Center Special Collections Preservation Project What activity (or activities) would the grant support? The African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is seeking support for the development of a two stage preservation and outreach initiative. The first output area will employ an external consultant to create a comprehensive preservation assessment report. The purpose of this assessment is to provide a thorough actionable report of archival planning needs. The scope of the assessment will cover the collections and their institutional context - the physical building, storage environment, security, access, care, conservation repair, and exhibition. Collections at AARLCC are found in the following mediums: paper, photographic, book, art, framed art, manuscript and oversized materials. Besides identifying a hierarchy of preservation needs, the report will serve as documentation for further institutional budgeting. The second output will be the completion of two preservation and collections care workshops for the general public. AARLCC is located in one of the oldest historically black communities in Broward County, Florida. Located on Sistrunk Blvd, named for one of Broward County’s first black physicians, AARLCC opened in 2002, and has served as the repository of materials related to the local, national and international voices of the African diaspora. With time, and as the surrounding neighborhoods undergo a change in population, the risk of losing valuable information is evident. The average person is unaware that their personal papers have historical value. Often, records of a community’s history are lost or discarded. Of great importance is the need to collect and preserve the history of this and other historically Black communities in Broward.

In this paper, I lay out the tenets of his cultural-ecological (CE) theory of minority student responses to schooling. I also offer critical commentary and point out ways in which CE theory can be sharp- ened to facilitate increasingly nuanced and accurate analyses. Even as I point to specific problems in Dr Ogbu’s work, my suggestions for enhancing CE theory do not contradict its basic tenets, which provide a solid resource for researchers who study minority student communities. Rather, they add nuance to it by incorporating recent developments in anthropological theory.     CHRISTOPHER JENCKS MEREDITH PHILLIPS 1 The Black-White Test Score Gap: An Introduction FRICAN AMERICANS currently score lower than A European Americans on vocabulary, reading, and mathematics tests, as well as on tests that claim to measure scholastic apti- tude and intelligence.1 This gap appears before children enter kindergarten (figure 1-1), and it persists into adulthood. It has narrowed since 1970, but the typical American black still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests.2 On some tests the typical American black scores below more than 85 percent of whites.3 1.
