In deed, that this has taken such a long time is because we wished to have it in the mind of Your Holiness, since we are your sons and you will forgive us. If there is a wrong or sin that we have committed, the Deity, the Son of the living God, who is wanted by all, has given you the key to redeem the wanted ones from among the un wanted and to turn as your sons the kings that have committed sins. And we implore you that you visit your son with your fatherly zeal, with your peaceful power, and bless and absolve the sins of our wives and sons. May the Lord prolong your potential with long life with all justice. Amen. Earlier I have answered both of your mes sages by letters: “Please, do not quarrel, love one another.” I advise and serve as an elder, as a mother, as a father but it is not something that I ordered you, like a king saying “Have this done”. And now let us not be the target (?) of the mockery of gentiles and of Satan. As we have many enemies on this side of the sea and from the other side, if we fight against one another and if Christian blood is shed in vain Christ will not be happy. And now let not the armies of you two meet. If they meet it will come to fighting. Please, have patience until I come. Let your armies stay where they are. Besides, if I turn my face towards Tigrē many things will happen in Werre Babo, in Argobba and in Wello. I hear [people] saying that the neckband (mateb) will be cut; they will become Muslims. I was saying, “Can it be the lost advice of Abba Waṭew?” And now it is better if it is discussed. However, it is not that it would have been difficult for me to destroy him but [I have no desire] to be on bad terms with my brother. And now it is bad to do wrong; I do not act wrongly. For a wronged person has never been disadvantaged. Anyway I am coming there. Everything will be done when we meet. The messenger carrying this letter is also said to have been entrusted with an oral message from Minīlik intended for Tekle Haymanot. It has been preserved in Hiruy’s book as follows: “Why do you always humiliate me? Some time ago you came in force and had my country Gojjam destroyed, and [then] left. And now again you have appointed people over the country of the Galla which I have brought under my control. Now after this I am coming; don’t go away. Choose a place which you prepare in Haro, Jimma [or] Chelliya and wait for me in an open field. I am not sending this message in a letter believing that you would read it alone by yourself, tear it into pieces and throw it away, pretending not to have heard about it and run away. But if it is delivered orally and if you have heard and flee, your servants would make critical observations against you. Approach him and receive his benediction. You have entered [into] a foreign creed, i.e. one different from mine, return; you have accepted the creed of the ferenj, return to the creed of your fathers, return to the abun and swear the oath to him, in order to make yourself liked and blessed by him . If you say, “I will do nothing of [the kind]”, know that your hand is at stake! The person who has recorded this and the follow ing two pro- clamations dated them “Vers le 10 Janvier”, “Vers la fin du même mois” and “Le même jour” respectively. Whether he ever saw them in writing is impossible to know; indeed they may have been proclaimed orally, which may explain the lack of proper, solemn introductions and dates. In any case the proclamation is clearly addressed to Catholics. The last phrase indicates the punishment of having one hand cut off and the property handed back to the missionaries. Document no. 69 Yohannis IV, proclamation on the practice of Islam [Jan. 1882] You who were a Muslim I made a Christian three years ago; if you do not remember it, calculate yourself. But [in reality] you are a Christian only by day and exercise Muslim practices by night. You do not eat meat together with Christians, you do not partake of the Communion. Be a real Christian, come to the abun to be blessed, take a confessor, eat Christian meat . If you marry, marry a Christian girl, and do not give your daughter to anyone but a Christian. Whoever does not do [anything of] this, may he be killed like a Ṭilṭal or a Galla, and the killer may receive the insignia of an elephant killer. __________________ AECPC, Massaouah 4, fol. 267, French translation. The result revealed that the explored articles are comprehensive in their content dealing with the history of the church, its popular figures, institutions, communities and relation with the state and foreign communities. The scholarship applied for the reconstruction of such issues, however, threatens not only the quality but also the reliability of the produced accounts, no matter how the few strong sides are not deniable.     Religion, State & Society, Voz. 24, No. 4, 1996 The Armenian Church Under the Soviet Regime, Part 2: the Leadership of Vazgen FELIX CORLEY This is the second part of an article tracing the history of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Soviet Union covering the period from 1955 until the arrival of glas­ nost in the later 1980s. The first part covered the period from 1938 to 1954, when the Church was led by Kevork Chorekchyan, first as locum tenens when the catholicos­ sal see at Echmiadzin was vacant, later as catholicos. Kevork died on 9 May 1954 and Archbishop Vahan Kostanyan took over as locum tenens pending the calling of a National Ecclesiastical Council to elect a successor. 1 The third part of this article will take the history of the Church into the independence era up to the death of Vazgen in 1994. Vazgen becomes Catholicos During the 1945 church council which elected Kevork catholicos, the Soviet authori­ ties had noted the presence from Romania of Vazgen Paljyan, then a celibate priest. Levon Karapet Paljyan was born in Bucharest, Romania, on 20 September 1908. His parents were from Redesto in the Ottoman Empire, which they left in 1898 to settle in Bucharest. His father was a shoemaker and his mother a teacher (who was also active in the moderate Armenian diaspora party, the Hunchaks). The young Levon studied pedagogy and psychology at Bucharest University, graduating in 1936. He taught from 1929 to 1943 at the Armenian parish school in Bucharest and edited a monthly magazine Herg (Harvest), which he had founded in 1937.

    Power, Church and the Gult System in Gojjam, Ethiopia POWER, CHURCH AND THE GULT SYSTEM IN GOJJAM, ETHIOPIA Temesgen Gebeyehu BAYE Bahir Dar University, Faculty of Social Sciences Department of History POB: 2190, Ethiopia [email protected] Since the introduction of Christianity to Ethiopia, there had been an interdependence between the state and the church. Both parties benefited from this state of affairs. The Orthodox Church played as the ideological arm of the state. The king became head not only of the state, but also of the church. The church enjoyed royal protection and patronage, ranging in concrete terms like the granting of land, called the gult system. The gult system was an important economic institution and connection between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the state. The system was essentially a political and economic relations between the state, the church and the cultivators. It not only included tribute and administrative rights, but also entailed direct control over land. In the Ethiopian academics, the issue of the gult system has been treated and examined in its totality. There is an evident gap in our knowledge of the dynamics of the gult system and its ideological, administrative, political and economic implications. This paper, based on published and unpublished materials, examines the dynamics of gult, state and church relations intersectionally. It attempts to identify changes and continuities in the basic pattern of relations and a variety of institutional linkages. To this end, a great deal of archive collections on Gojjam Governorate General from the Ethiopian National Archives and Library Agency has been consulted and reviewed to add new and useful insights and understandings on relations and interests between the cultivators, the church and state.

This doctoral thesis explores the theological depth and spiritual riches of Yared’s liturgical hymnography. A thorough analysis of his Dəggwa hymnary shows some of the main historical developments of the soteriology of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥədo Church (EOTC). The thesis affirms that doing theology in conversation with liturgical hymnody establishes the platform for prima theologia. The introduction gives a brief overview of the nature of liturgical theology and the historical context of Yared and Ethiopian hymnody. It also provides some helpful details regarding the manuscript tradition of the Dəggwa. The first chapter deals with the life and the hymnographical works of Yared, along with a brief historical-theological description of each liturgical corpus.     Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Lessons – English Version Early Types of Worship in Ancient Ethiopia No doubt the element of all kinds of forms of worship were practiced in the country especially the sun god which was widely known in Axum, one of Ethiopia's earliest Kingdoms. Sun god worship became widely practiced in Arabia in the town of Yemen. These Arabians a Cushite semetic people, migrated across the Red Sea to the South of Axum taking with them their sun god and moon worship and other cultures. Sun worship became widely practiced up to the point when the Queen of Sheba rose up during the era of King Solomon where she "admitted that she was a sun worshipper, though others adores stones, trees and grave images." Sun god worship was also current in Egypt. It was also believed that during this early stage, - "the worship of the serpent was popular and Ethiopians offered sacrifices to it. This is confirmed to some extent by archaeological evidence found at Axum. On a stelae at Axum an engraving of serpent is still visible today, though the worship of the serpent was spread through almost all the nations of the Middle East. We have reason to believe that this cult was introduced directly to Ethiopia; from Persia. The description in Avesta, the Sacred Book of Persia concerning this matter, is identical with the tradition found in Ethiopia". Nevertheless, Ethiopia is the first African nation to appreciate and worship the One True God of Old Testament and adopted the Judaic element (1,000 B.C.).
