Esposito, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Muslims in America must move beyond theological discourse and polemics to creating a dynamic apparatus that can promote indigenous and organic Muslim American culture and that accommodates ideological and cultural diversity. Muslims needs to move beyond attempting solely to correct their image and dispel stereotypes. While these are admirable goals, they cannot be the end goal for engaging in the creative arts, because such a narrowly defined, negative vision does not allow for an organic expression of the self. It is imperative that Muslims establish an artistic tradition in America, because to be an American Muslim is a creative process in itself. Laying the foundation for an expressive culture will ensure that Muslims celebrate their humanity and affirm their dignity, and they will then be free from having to define themselves in opposition to something else. The Social Involvement of Women in Islam
The Social Involvement of Women in Islam By Imam Zaid Shakir www.zaytuna.org One of the persistent attacks against Islam is that it is a religion which stifles the social involvement of women. By social involvement, we mean involvement in those spheres of endeavor which occur outside of the home and impact on the general nature and direction of society. Islam, it is said, desires to divest women of any meaningful social role, to keep them “trapped” in the confines of their homes, under the constant surveillance and control of men. This claim, as we will endeavor to show, does not accurately reflect the fullness of Islamic teachings on this issue. While Islam does advocate a social scheme which places great emphasis on the domestic role of women, it also creates ample space for their meaningful participation in public affairs. The purpose of this article is to examine aspects of that social involvement based on the Qur’an and the prophetic tradition. That examination will be preceded by a brief expose on the fundamental equality of men and women in Islam. The Fundamental Equality of Men and Women in Islam The Qur’an emphasizes that men and women are equal in their physical and metaphysical composition. We read in that regard, “We have surely ennobled the descendants of Adam.” [1] This ennoblement of the human being precludes any claims to gender superiority, or any feelings of inferiority based on physical, or metaphysical composition. Such feelings underlie schemes of gender-based oppression, and have no place in Islam. We also read in the Qur’an, “We have surely created the human in the best of molds.” [2] Again, this process of human creation is not gender specific. -

It provides a brief overview of the rise of anti-Muslim and anti-Islam sentiment known as “Islamophobia”, and it investigates claims that American Muslims cannot be trusted to be loyal to the United States because of their religion. This research examines American Muslim perspectives on national security discourse regarding terrorism and radicalization, both domestic and foreign, after 9/11. The article argues that it is important to highlight developments, both progressive and conservative, in Muslim communities in the United States over the last 12 years that belie suspicions of widespread anti-American sentiment among Muslims or questions about the loyalty of American Muslims. The article concludes with a discussion of important shifts from a Muslim identity politics that disassociated from American identity and ‘American exceptionalism’ to a position of integration and cultural assimilation. -

The result revealed that the explored articles are comprehensive in their content dealing with the history of the church, its popular figures, institutions, communities and relation with the state and foreign communities. The scholarship applied for the reconstruction of such issues, however, threatens not only the quality but also the reliability of the produced accounts, no matter how the few strong sides are not deniable. The February CPRF was titled, “Track Two and Iran: Arresting the Downward Spiral”. Speakers included: Professor Marshall J. Breger, professor of law at the Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America. In 2002, Breger was Lady Davis Visiting Professor of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2003 he was Distinguished Sy-Cip Fulbright Lecturer in the Philippines. Professor Robert A. Destro, professor of law and director and founder of the Interdisciplinary Program in Law & Religion at the Catholic University of America. Dr. Ahmad Iravani, Director for Islamic Studies and Dialogue at the Center for the Study of Culture and Values at the Catholic University of America. He received the first stage of Khareg, (equal to PhD) in Islamic Studies, Islamic University, in Qom, Iran, in 1992. Ambassador (ret.) William Green Miller, Senior Advisor to the US-Iran Program of Search for Common Ground since 1998. He is currently a Senior Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He served as Vice Consul and Political Officer at the US Consulate in Isfahan, Iran, for three years; he served as political officer in the US Embassy in Tehran between 1962 and 1964. The speakers talked about the value of track two programs involving Iran. One area in particular that they found to be conducive to dialogue was religion. They thought that much common ground could be found between religions, especially when focusing on an Abrahamic paradigm. Sports and science were two other areas that were mentioned as good subjects for dialogue involving Iran. Iranians are tolerant and intelligent people, and the speakers noted that anyone who travels to Iran is welcomed warmly and treated with respect.
