resources 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This study explores the role of place making and promotion in the commodification of cultural heritage resources and how digital technologies intertwine with these processes. This research examines whether locations have coherent strategies to appeal to consumers using cultural resources and attributes such as place promotion, product and quality. Analysis will centre on the contemporary influences and contribution of digital technologies in the exploitation of cultural heritage. The study adopts a culture economy approach, which is concerned with the exploitation of cultural products for achieving territorial development goals. These products comprise historical and pre-historical sites, landscapes, artisanship, languages, dialects, folklore, drama, literary references and visual arts. A further dimension under consideration is the watering down or ‘Disneyfication’ effect of commodification on place image and identity. This relates to practice or situations where cultural items, interpretations and rituals are homogenised or diluted to the extent that they are no longer meaningful or representative of local people. Drawing on case studies of reshaping built environments across Europe, the study examines efforts to promote and produce distinctive place images using digital technologies, which are able to compete in an increasingly crowded virtual marketplace. The research further considers the economic role of localism, local initiatives and community action in taking responsibility for local cultural heritage. The case studies are: Empúries archaeological site on the Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia, Spain; the Monastery of the Holy Cross, Rostock, Germany; Palazzo Pretorio in Pontedera, an industrial town in the Arno Valley, Pisa, Italy; Talking Statues, Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition to the case studies, a desk research chapter examines three larger scale examples to further illustrate how place making, promotion and commodification of cultural heritage resources have become intertwined with digital technology innovations. This includes: the digital operation of Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK; a brief description of the UNESCO and Google partnership to virtually visit 19 European World Heritage sites the use of digital technologies in the Vatican Museum’s Sistine Chapel to manage the effects of heighted tourist visits. The results show that digital technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and dedicated mobile phone applications can be used to enhance visitors’ experiences of cultural heritage and bolster the promotion of place and production of distinctive place images in the commodification of cultural heritage resources. This enhances visitors’ engagement, interaction and enjoyment of sites, offering a new and exciting approach in public participation and engagement with cultural heritage. Various other, non-AR applications are used to facilitate planning, exhibitions, online presence, promotion and brand development, as well as preservation of cultural heritage. • Early Mythology Ancestry
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY EARLY MYTHOLOGY ANCESTRY 1 INTRODUCTION This book covers the earliest history of man and the mythology in some countries. The beginning from Adam and Eve and their descendants is from the Old Testament, but also by several authors and genealogy programs. The age of the persons in the lineages in Genesis is expressed in their “years”, which has little to do with the reality of our 365-day years. I have chosen one such program as a starting point for this book. Several others have been used, and as can be expected, there are a lot of conflicting information, from which I have had to choose as best I can. It is fairly well laid out so the specific information is suitable for print. In addition, the lineage information shown covers the biblical information, fairly close to the Genesis, and it also leads to both to mythical and historical persons in several countries. Where myth turns into history is up to the reader’s imagination. This book lists individuals from Adam and Eve to King Alfred the Great of England. Between these are some mythical figures on which the Greek (similar to Roman) mythology is based beginning with Zeus and the Nordic (Anglo-Saxon) mythology beginning with Odin (Woden). These persons, in their national mythologies, have different ancestors than the biblical ones. More about the Nordic mythology is covered in the “Swedish Royal Ancestry, Book 1”. Of additional interest is the similarity of the initial creation between the Greek and the Finnish mythology in its national Kalevala epos, from which a couple of samples are included here.

  • BIWEEKLY COLLOQUIUM Monday, 28Th of November 17.00 THE
BIWEEKLY COLLOQUIUM Monday, 28th of November 17.00 THE ISTED LION – THE MOST TRAVELLED AND REINTERPRETED DANISH MONUMENT Prof. Inge Adriansen, Museum Sønderjylland, Sønderborg Slot This monument is a perfect example of a site of memory – well suited to mark distinct and conflicting recollections and to illustrate changing roles and meanings. The Isted Lion, created by the Danish sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen, was inaugurated with great pomp in 1862 at the St. Mary's Cemetery in Flensburg. It was commissioned as a Danish monument of victory and a sepulchral memorial site for Danish soldiers fallen in the battle of Isted in the Slesvig War of 1850. After the 1864 war, in which Germany was victorious, the giant metal lion was torn down from its plinth and taken to Berlin, where the monument served as a German trophy until September 1945. After the 2nd World War, a request for return was made and American troops carried the monument to Copenhagen and handed it over to the Danish King, it was received as a representative of the Danish nation. The rightful location of the monument has since then been the subject of questions in the Danish parliament and has been vehemently debated in the city council in Flensburg. Meanwhile, a final twist to its history is about to take place and in September 2011 the Isted Lion will be carried back to Flensburg and re-inaugurated at its original site. This paper aims to trace this history of changing contestation, and details the discourse that follows its changing roles and meanings. Venue: Leibnizstraße 1, Seminar Room 204 .

C. Andersen Reading the Story The Angel for the Children of the Painter Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann This portrait of Andersen reading aloud was painted by a good friend of his, the Polish-Danish female painter Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann (1819-1881). The children depicted in the painting are Jerichau-Baumann’s own. The book that Andersen is holding in his hand, as well as the illustration on the wall behind the bed, makes it clear that the story that Andersen is reading aloud to the sick child and her siblings is The Angel that was published in 1843. Andersen modelled for the painting on several occasions and was happy with the result except from the fact that one sees one of his socks on it. 캔버스 유화, 오귀스트 시오트, 1855 도로테아 멜키오르의 초상화 원작 _ 개인 소장 2 Portrait of Dorothea Melchior Oil on canvas, painted by August Schiøtt, 1855 Original in private ownership
