  • Music and Drama Mix in Great Lakes Fest's Boldest Undertaking Ever
Music and drama mix in Great Lakes fest's boldest undertaking ever David Lyman, Special to the Detroit Free Press Published 10:06 p.m. ET June 14, 2017 | Updated 1:05 a.m. ET June 15, 2017 The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival is mounting an ambitious world premiere with "Shostakovich and The Black Monk." See a recent rehearsal. (Photo: Xi Wangk) It began, as so many projects do, with a passing conversation. It was 2000, and Philip Setzer, a founding violinist of the renowned Emerson String Quartet, was speaking with Gerard McBurney, a British composer and music scholar. Knowing that Setzer had a deep interest in the music of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, McBurney said he understood that late in his life, Shostakovich had grown quite obsessed with a short story by Anton Chekhov. “The story is called ‘The Black Monk,' ” says Setzer. “I wasn’t familiar with it, but apparently, Shostakovich intended to turn the story into an opera. He wanted it to be his last major project, but his hands weren’t really working and ... .” Setzer just stops. Shostakovich died before he could do anything with the opera, and it’s clear that, for Setzer, the composer’s inability to realize that dream was something of a tragedy. Setzer decided to explore the Chekhov tale himself. Written in 1893, the story tells of a scholar named Kovrin and his encounters with a black monk so mysterious that he verges on the mystical. “It’s a haunting story,” says Setzer, who found himself nearly as captivated by it as Shostakovich had been.

Death of Ivan Ilych 1 Introduction 2 About The Author 3 Summary of the Text 4 Analysis of the Novel 5Characters of the novel 6 Theme of the Novel 7 Important Quotation explained 8 Important Questions and Answers 1 Introduction: The Death of Ivan Ilych – alternately called a short story or a novella – is probably the most famous shorter work of Count Leo Tolstoy. Since it was published in 1886, in Volume 12 of Tolstoy's collected works (edited by his wife, Countess Sofia Tolstoy), it's been hailed as a masterpiece by critics and readers. Ivan Ilych also acquired a reputation as one of the modern treatments of death – one that has changed the way that subject is treated. Writing about death was nothing new, to be sure. In the 19th century, death had been a favorite subject of the Romantics and many writers who came after them. They just couldn't stop talking about it, and created dying romantic heroes of all kinds: star-crossed lovers with tragic deaths, lonely tortured artists who came to painfully beautiful ends, and valiant men in battle who sacrificed themselves. (Our popular culture still owes a lot to the Romantics.) What was new and remarkable in Tolstoy's work was how unremarkable its main character – and his death – was. The Death of Ivan Ilych is the story of a painfully ordinary government official who comes down with an untreatable illness and dies at home slowly, painfully, and full of loneliness. He's middle aged, has an unhappy family life, and a petty personality.
