Multicultural Community Building in an Urban Neighborhood A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY John Champe IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Karen Ho June 2015 © John Champe 2015 i Acknowledgements I would like to thank my advisor, Karen Ho, and the rest of my committee, David Valentine, Jean Langford, and Doug Hartmann. A special thanks also to the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the University of Minnesota for some of my research on the neighborhood. For commenting on drafts of chapters, I want to thank Tim Gitzen, Nate Meyer, Amy Porter, Solvieg Brown, Marieke vanEijk, Susi Krehbiel Keefe, Karen kapusta-pofahl, Joe Esser, Sara Kaiser, Alex Bauman, and Dennis Moldestad. I’d also like to thank a few Champes – Sarah, Ava, Amelie, Richard and Sally. ii Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to the activists of the Whittier neighborhood. iii Abstract This is an anthropological ethnography of multicultural community-building among the almost all-white activists in Minneapolis’ largest neighborhood, Whittier. It shows the effects that the discourses, theories, and activities of these neighborhood activists have on the social structures that reproduce class, racial, and ethnic inequality. The first chapter analyzes the acrimonious battle over the opening of an apartment building for homeless. It shows the construction of the symbols at play, including Stability, Burden, Stakeholders, Gentrification, and Over-concentration of the poor. Chapter two explains how politics in Whittier became so polarized between competing factions of white, liberal, middle-class homeowners, who all share a love of their neighborhood’s diversity. -

A R C H O N S HIDDEN RULERS THROUGH THE AGES A R C H O N S HIDDEN RULERS THROUGH THE AGES WATCH THIS IMPORTANT VIDEO UFOs, Aliens, and the Question of Contact MUST-SEE THE OCCULT REASON FOR PSYCHOPATHY Organic Portals: Aliens and Psychopaths KNOWLEDGE THROUGH GNOSIS Boris Mouravieff - GNOSIS IN THE BEGINNING ...1 The Gnostic core belief was a strong dualism: that the world of matter was deadening and inferior to a remote nonphysical home, to which an interior divine spark in most humans aspired to return after death. This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -
Emily Jane Brontë - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Emily Jane Brontë - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Emily Jane Brontë(30 July 1818 – 19 December 1848) Emily Brontë was an English novelist and poet, best remembered for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature. Emily was the third eldest of the four surviving Brontë siblings, between the youngest Anne and her brother Branwell. She published under the pen name Ellis Bell. Biography Emily Brontë was born on 30 July 1818 in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire, to Maria Branwell and Patrick Brontë. She was the younger sister of Charlotte Brontë and the fifth of six children. In 1824, the family moved to Haworth, where Emily's father was perpetual curate, and it was in these surroundings that their literary gifts flourished. Early Life and Education After the death of their mother in 1821, when Emily was three years old, the older sisters Maria, Elizabeth and Charlotte were sent to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge, where they encountered abuse and privations later described by Charlotte in Jane Eyre. Emily joined the school for a brief period. When a typhus epidemic swept the school, Maria and Elizabeth caught it. Maria, who may actually have had tuberculosis, was sent home, where she died. Emily was subsequently removed from the school along with Charlotte and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died soon after their return home. The three remaining sisters and their brother Patrick Branwell were thereafter educated at home by their father and aunt Elizabeth Branwell, their mother's sister. -

Here’s a bit of Carnamah history for your own background knowledge. Carnamah is a town in the Mid-West region of Western Australia, 300 kilometres north of Perth. The town is named after the pastoral station established by Duncan Macpherson, a Scottish migrant, who first leased land there in 1861. Macpherson's property Carnamah derives its name from the Carnamah Spring featured on the land. By 1866, Englishman James Nairn and his family had settled in the district and established Noolooloo Station. For over 25 years, the Nairn and Macpherson families were the only settlers in the Carnamah district. In 1894, the Midland Railway Company of Western Australia (MRWA) built a railway line north of Perth in exchange for land from the Government. -
