Bacterial endosymbionts are common across insects, but we often lack a deeper knowledge of their prevalence across most organisms. Next-generation sequencing approaches can characterize bacterial diversity associated with a host and at the same time facilitate the fast and simultaneous screening of infectious bacteria. In this study, we used 16S rRNA tag encoded amplicon pyrosequencing to survey bacterial communities of 310 samples representing 221 individuals, 176 colonies and 95 species of ants. We found three distinct endosymbiont groups—Wolbachia (Alphaproteobacteria: Rickettsiales), Spiroplasma (Firmicutes: Entomoplasmatales), -

Since they are also phylogenetically compact and relatively easily identified, these insects offer an excellent opportunity to study dispersal and evolution in a Tertiary West Indian fauna. The age of the Dominican amber has not yet been determined, but combined stratigraphic and foraminiferan analyses of its matrix suggest an origin at least as far back as the early Miocene (Saunders in Baroni Urbani and Saunders, 1982). am inclined to favor ttis minimal age (about 20 million years) or at most a late Oligocene origin, for the following reason. In a sample of 596 amber pieces containing an estimated 1,248 ants that recently examined (439 now deposited in the Museum of Comparative Zoology), found 36 genera and well-defined subgenera, to which may be added one other, Trachymyrmex, reported earlier by Baroni Urbani (1980a). Of these 37 taxa only three, or 8%, are unknown from the living world fauna (see Table 1). The relative contemporaneity of the Dominican amber ants contrasts with that of the Baltic amber, which is Eocene to early Oligocene in age (Larsson, 1978) and pos- sesses 44% extinct genera; that is, 19 of the 43 genera recorded by Wheeler (1914) are unknown among living ants. The Dominican amber ants also differ to a similar degree from those of the Floris- sant, Colorado, shales, which are upper Oligocene in age and con-. -

Fisher US Geological Survey San Diego Field Station 5745 Kearny Villa Rd., Suite M San Diego, CA 92123 2001 2 INTRODUCTION: In conjunction with ongoing biospecies richness monitoring at the Nature Reserve of Orange County (NROC), ant sampling began in October 1999. We quantitatively sampled for all ant species in the central and coastal portions of NROC at long-term study sites. Ant pitfall traps (Majer 1978) were used at current reptile and amphibian pitfall trap sites, and samples were collected and analyzed from winter 1999, summer 2000, and winter 2000. Summer 2001 samples were recently retrieved, and are presently being identified. Ants serve many roles on different ecosystem levels, and can serve as sensitive indicators of change for a variety of factors. Data gathered from these samples provide the beginning of three years of baseline data, on which long-term land management plans can be based. MONITORING OBJECTIVES: The California Floristic Province, which includes southern California, is considered one of the 25 global biodiversity hotspots (Myers et al. 2000). The habitat of this region is rapidly changing due to pressure from urban and agricultural development. The Scientific Review Panel of the State of California's Natural Community Conservation Planning Program (NCCP) has identified preserve design parameters as one of the six basic research needs for making informed long term conservation planning decisions. -

Eighty-nine species belonging to 31 genera and 9 subfamilies of Formicidae are known. The most speciose genera were Monomorium Mayr, 1855, and Camponotus Mayr, 1861, with 13 and 12 species, respectively. The fresh collection yielded 31 species recorded for the first time in Senegal, including two undescribed species. The composition of the ant fauna reflects the fact that Senegal is in intermediate ecozone between North Africa and sub-Saharan areas, with some species previously known only from distant locations, such as Sudan. Introduction Information on the ant fauna of Senegal is mostly known from scattered historical records, and no synthetic list has been published. The first record dates from 1793 while the most recent was in 1987 (see Table 1). -

LEICESTERSHIRE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY The Craneflies of Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) John Kramer* Tipula maxima – Graham Calow LESOPS 26 (2011) ISSN 0957 - 1019 *31 Ash Tree Road, Oadby, Leicester LE2 5TE 1 Introduction It is necessary to say at the outset that, since craneflies are not a scientific group, its meaning has changed over the years. It seems to be synonymous with daddy long-legs , meaning all long-legged two-winged flies. These, in the past, have included Winter Gnats (Trichoceridae) Fold-winged flies (Ptychopteridae) and Dixidae. The present meaning, used here, is restricted to the super-family Tipuloidea (Order Diptera) which, for the past 20 years (Starý 1992), has been composed of four families - Tipulidae, Pediciidae, Cylindrotomidae and Limoniidae. I have tried to provide a firm basis for further work on craneflies in VC55, and to suggest what that work might be. There are voucher specimens for most, though not all, of the records and wherever there is only a single record, more records are needed to firmly establish that species on the county list. Pioneering work in Europe Before any meaningful lists of craneflies could be produced it was necessary to have fixed and unambiguous names for them. The genus-species naming system for doing this was first provided for the then-known craneflies by the 1758 volume of Linnaeus’s Systemae Naturae , published in Sweden, so this date provides a starting-point. Linnaeus named 14 of the more conspicuous craneflies on the British Checklist. Johan Christian Fabricius was a student of Linnaeus and did more work than his mentor on insects. -

This project involved integrated morphological and molecular taxonomy using one mitochondrial gene (COI) and four nuclear genes (AA, H3, LR and Wg). Seven major clades were identified and are here designated as the M. aeneovirens, M. anderseni, M. biroi, M. fulvihirtus, M. ludius, M. majeri and M. potteri species-groups. Within these clades, smaller complexes of similar species were also identified and designated species-complexes. The M. ludius species-group was identified purely on molecular grounds, as the morphol- ogy of its members is indistinguishable from typical members of the M. -
