It is increasingly becoming a go-to country for European birders in Spring, and offers some of the most exciting birding in the Western Palearctic biogeographic region. Not only does it offer a chance to see Afro-European migration at its peak, but it also offers a plethora of exciting and special endemic and near-endemic species at its core. Add to this the fact that throughout the tour we have excellent accommodation and some of the best food available anywhere in the world (in my opinion), it all goes toward making Morocco a must-visit location for any birder branching out into the world. It is also currently by far the safest North African country to visit, with little crime and none of the problems that plague the rest of the region, and therefore presents a comfortable and safe opportunity to experience North Africa. This year’s tour followed our tried and tested route, starting in the manic city of Marrakesh at a serene hotel amongst the craziness, a quick departure to the idyllic Ourika Valley and the high snow-capped peaks of Oukameiden and the high Atlas Mountains, before descending to the stony desert around Boumalne Dades and the ochre-cast dunes of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi. -

The Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Madagascar Pond Heron Ardeola idae was initiated jointly by CMS and AEWA in 2007 upon a recommendation of the 14 th Meeting of the CMS Scientific Council. 2. The plan covers the entire range of this intra-African migrant. The drafting of the Plan was commissioned to the BirdLife International Africa Partnership Secretariat with financial support provided by the Ministry of Environment of Italy and was compiled by a team under the management of Paul Kariuki Ndang’ang’a. Earlier drafts of the Plan have been consulted extensively with experts and governmental officials at the Range States. 3. The Plan has already been adopted by the 4 th Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (Antananarivo, Madagascar, 15-19 September 2008). Action requested: The Scientific Council is requested to: a. review and endorse the Plan; and b. transmit the Plan to the Conference of the Parties for adoption. For reasons of economy, documents are printed in a limited number, and will not be distributed at the meeting. In the trunk of the study area, Hijaz Asir highlands rises up to about 3,000 meters in the south near Abha, while at northern boundary of the area near Taif, the elevation is about 1,500 meters (refer to Figure B.1-6 and Figure B.1-7). There is a distinct coastal plain, locally known as Tihama, separated from the hills by an imposing scarp wall that runs parallel to the Red Sea along 700 km in the study area. Toward the east forms the peak of Hijaz Asir highlands, hills peter out further east to the interior, and give way to an extensive plateau covered with lava flow (Harrat) of the area, and very thin veneer rock debris and alluvium over a basalt and crystalline basement, which is frequency outcrop as knolls and low hills. -

Intraclutch changes in egg size associated with laying order may refect a strategy of “brood survival” or “brood reduction” adopted by female birds in diferent situations. Methods: We conducted feld studies on the breeding parameters of the Saxaul Sparrow (Passer ammodendri) in Gansu Province, China from 2010 to 2017, to clarify the factors afecting the egg investment and reproductive perfor- mance of this passerine species. Results: Our results revealed signifcant diferences in clutch size, egg size and the fedging rate between the frst and second brood of Saxaul Sparrows and suggested that this typical desert species allocates more breeding resources to the more favourable second brood period, leading to greater reproductive output. Female body size pre- sented a positive relationship with egg size, and male body size presented positive relationships with clutch size and hatchability. The females that started their clutches later laid more eggs, and hatchability and the fedging rate also increased with a later laying date in the frst brood period. With successive eggs laid within the 5-egg clutches (the most frequent clutch size), egg size increased for the frst three eggs and then signifcantly decreased. -

ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

On our exploration of these idyllic isles, we will search for birds in the most spectacular scenery, be it rugged, forest-clad volcanic peaks, verdant forest patches or white, shell-laden beaches, fringed by warm water and teeming coral reefs. Island wildlife is generally susceptible to extinction and the islands of this area are no exception, with birds like the unfortunate Dodo serving as stark reminders of Mans’ heavy hand in these sensitive environments.
