Verdi's Rigoletto
Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered. -

Paolo Bosisio, Opera Stage Director
Paolo Bosisio, opera stage director Text by Roberto Alonge Paolo Bosisio has always been, for me, a colleague in the university. One of the most brilliant: philologist, theatre historian, but also a great organizer of culture. When he suddenly retired - eight years ahead of time - without forewarning anyone, not even me (although I had always been academically close to him) I felt bad about it, I felt a little betrayed. But above all I did not understand why he opted for such a radical and unusual choice. In Italy, in fact, university professors are the only social category that would never want to retire. Once (not many years ago, I would say until all the Eighties, if I remember correctly), also thanks to a late feudal privilege, now eliminated, they were able to stay inside the University even a good bit after seventy years: if Alzheimer does not make me rave, even up to 77, to a lucky few bureaucratic hooking the sumptuous prerogatives of the magistrates, certainly the real caste in Italy, immediately after that of politicians. So - I asked myself - why did Paolo Bosisio have all this desire to leave? It took me some time to understand that the main reason (I am not saying the only one) was the possibility of devoting more time to the opera’s stage direction. In truth I had already been a spectatora of some performances directed by him, years before, in Ivrea, where he - in one of his many parallel lives – ran the artistic direction of Teatro Giacosa: but I did not understand (because I did not know) that it was a true, devastating passion, like everything that is rooted in the tenacious memory of our childhood. -
