Chapter 1 Spotting the Spoof The Value of Telling Stories Out of (and in) School This book creates a dialogue between two fields that rarely have anything to say to each other: economics and the human- ities. We mean to show how that dialogue could be conducted and why it has a great deal to contribute. The best dialogues take place when each interlocutor speaks from her best self, without pretending to be something she is not. In their recent book Phishing for Phools: The Economics of Manipulation and Deception, Nobel Prize–winning economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller expand the standard defini- tion of “phishing.”1 In their usage, it goes beyond committing fraud on the Internet to indicate something older and more gen- eral: “getting people to do things that are in the interest of the phisherman” rather than their own.2 In much the same spirit, we would like to expand the meaning of another recent com- puter term, “spoofing,” which normally means impersonating someone else’s email name and address to deceive the recipi- ent—a friend or family member of the person whose name is stolen—into doing something no one would do at the behest of a stranger.     The Politics of Form of the Hassidic Tale Hannan Hever Yale University abstract: The main task of this article is to outline a framework of a theory of the politics of the literary form of the Hassidic tale. The point of departure of this theory is that the basic literary form of the Hassidic tale is a narrative of the accomplishment of a magic act that is conducted by the Tzaddik, the spiritual and political leader of the Hassidic community. The literary form of the tale is the main power creating the materialistic magic act. This is the reason why the political effect of the magic act repre- sented in the tale is a product of the tale’s form. The political effect of the tale is created by the way the tale is received by the Maskilic reader. As a religious person he makes a very sharp distinction between his acceptance of the authority of God and his rejection of the political theology that provides the Tzaddik with his political sovereignty. The Maskilic political response is based on the rejection of the Hassidic deep belief in the spiritual connection between God and the magic acts of the Tzaddik. The Maskilim despised the magic acts performed by the Tzaddik. Born in New York City, Smith was equally passionate about science, the humanities, and the arts from the time she was a teenager, stargazing with fellow amateur astronomers as well as reading and writing poetry. After initially training in biology, experimental psy- chology, and philosophy at City College in New York, Smith attended Brandeis University, where she received her BA summa cum laude in 1954 and a doctorate in English and American literature in 1964. She taught literature at Bennington College in Vermont from 1960 to 1972 while revising her doctoral dissertation, Poetic Closure: A Study of How Poems End. Published by the University of Chicago Press in 1968, it won both the Christian Gauss Award and the Explicator Award and brought Smith’s work wide attention. From 1973 to 1987 Smith taught at the University of Pennsylva- nia, first as professor of communications at the Annenberg School and soon after also as a member of the faculty of the English Department.
