The Will and Society in Medieval Catalonia and Languedoc, 800-1200 THE WILL AND SOCIETY IN MEDIEVAL CATALONIA AND LANGUEDOC, 800-1200 A thesis presented by Nathaniel Lane Taylor to The Department of History in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the subject of History Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts April, © by Nathaniel Lane Taylor. All rights reserved. ABSTRACT Some three thousand men and women of Languedoc and Catalonia (southwestern France and northeastern Spain) from before the year speak to us through their testaments. This volume of testamentary evidence is unmatched in archives anywhere else in medieval Europe of the ninth through twelfth centuries. A comparative and focused analysis from over , surviving wills (amassed from diverse archival collections as well as hundreds of different published text editions) spans several parallel avenues of comparative and investigative history to illuminate the society of Catalonia and Languedoc in this period. A study of testaments and testamentary publication from Roman roots through the twelfth century explores the legal culture of the testaments using the methods and approaches of the new anthropology of law. Next, collective analysis of the testaments yields insights into social and family history. In addition to prosopographical information about the testators and economic data about the lands and goods bequeathed, the testaments reveal crucial changes in the custom of inheritance and patrimonial succession--changes which reflect (or underlie) the social transformations of the “feudal revolution” and its aftermath. Another avenue explored is that of the testament as a pious, religious document. Bequests to ecclesiastical institutions, when seen in the context of familial distribution of the estate, allow one to gauge the relative importance of pious alms for individuals and families, and to follow trends in popularity of various religious institutions as beneficiaries and of different types of goods (land, money, or other goods) as alms. Finally, testamentary evidence illustrates several new institutional, social, legal and political developments of the twelfth century-- Reconquista and resettlement, the growth of the military orders, the development of personal financial accounting, the introduction of a lay notariate, and more. The appendices include an index of over , testamentary documents and a prosopographical register of judges appearing in testamentary probate ceremonies between and in Languedoc and Catalonia. COL·LEGI D’ARQUITECTES DE CATALUNYA 1874-1962 Enric Granell, Antoni Ramon The author of the cover photograph is Klaus Erik Halmburger. Thanks to the donation of Enric Granell, it forms part of the Historical Archive of the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya. This book is published at a time of crisis when it is useful to look back at our history and review the role played by the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (Architects’ Institute of Catalonia) at other, equally difficult moments and to see how, in its support to architects as a body, the COAC has been able to evolve by adapting to new situations. It is also positive to see how some constants of the COAC and, by extension, of Catalan architects, have continued throughout inevitable changes. These are values such as the will to undertake the responsibility for constructing a quality environment for our fellow citizens, with social and cultural commitment, incorporating the requirements and needs produced by the rapid transformation of lifestyles and technological means. Since 1874, first the Associació d’Arquitectes de Catalunya and then the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya have brought together the architectural profession, becoming its public representative and a link between citizens, professionals and architecture. With the opening of the building in Barcelona’s Plaça Nova, 50 years ago now, these roles acquired a new dimension. Today, at a time of far-reaching global change, the objectives remain the same, and we continue with our search for new ways to make them reality.

This thesis explores the norms, practices, and experiences that conditioned urban belonging in Late Medieval Barcelona. A combination of institutional, legal, intellectual and cultural analysis, the dissertation investigates how citizenship evolved and functioned on the Barcelonese stage. To this end, the thesis is structured into two parts. Part 1 includes four chapters, within which I establish the legal and institutional background of the Barcelonese citizen. Citizenship as a fiscal and individual privilege is contextualised within the negotiations that shaped the limits and prerogatives of monarchical and municipal power from the thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries.

It underwent major changes from its origins in the 11th century until the 16th century, when its evolu- tion peaked and a prototype was reached for Catalonia as a whole. For this reason, in the subsequent centuries the model did not change, but building elements were added to it in order to adapt the home to the times. Catalan farmhouses are a historical testimony, and their changes and enlargements always reflect the needs of their inhabitants and the technological possibilities of the period. Keywords: evolution, architectural models, farmhouses, rural economy, farming families Introduction techniques or the spread of these techniques became availa- ble to more and more people. Lluís Borrassà: the Vocation of Saint Peter, a panel from the Retable of Saint Peter in Terrassa Catalonia 1400 The International Gothic Style Organised by: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. From 29 March to 15 July 2012 (Temporary Exhibitions Room 1) Curator: Rafael Cornudella (head of the MNAC's Department of Gothic Art), with the collaboration of Guadaira Macías and Cèsar Favà Catalonia 1400. The International Gothic Style looks at one of the most creative cycles in the history of Catalan art, which coincided with the period in western art known as the 'International Gothic Style'. This period, which began at the end of the 14th century and went on until the mid-15th century, gave us artists who played a central role in the history of European art, as in the case of Lluís Borrassà, Rafael Destorrents, Pere Joan and Bernat Martorell. During the course of the 14th century a process of dialogue and synthesis took place between the two great poles of modernity in art: on one hand Paris, the north of France and the old Netherlands, and on the other central Italy, mainly Tuscany. Around 1400 this process crystallised in a new aesthetic code which, despite having been formulated first and foremost in a French and 'Franco- Flemish' ambit, was also fed by other international contributions and immediately spread across Europe. The artistic dynamism of the Franco- Flemish area, along with the policies of patronage and prestige of the French ruling House of Valois, explain the success of a cultural model that was to captivate many other European princes and lords.

  • The Unigenitus of Clement XI
Theological Studies 49 (1988) THE UNIGÉNITOS OF CLEMENT XI: A FRESH LOOK AT THE ISSUES JACQUES M. GRES-GAYER The Catholic University of America HERE is an enigma about Unigenitus, the ill-fated bull issued by Pope TClement XI (1713) against the resurgence of Jansenism. If the Jansenist movement in general has continued to attract scholars, whose recent contributions are changing perspectives,1 the constitution that condemned 101 "Jansenist propositions" extracted from the Réflexions morales was until recently left scrupulously untouched. It seemed taken for granted as an inevitable pivot—either a terminus ad quern, the logical conclusion of a century of theological and political disputes, or a terminus a quo, the origin of a movement of rebellion that eventually developed into a revolution.2 In other words, it was considered more a catalyst or an excuse for a latent social and political conflict than its real cause; hence the interest manifested in its prolegomena or later development rather than in the document itself. It was the document itself, however, the solemn exercise of the papal magisterium, that stimulated what was then perceived as the major crisis in Catholic history. The animosities, the political schemes, and the negotiations which accompanied its preparation, the uproar, the renewed negotiations, and the conflicts which followed its publication, suggest that there was more to this document than a collection of 101 condemned extracts from a spiritual book. But what was Unigenitus all about? In what appears to be a healthy reaction to a quasi-exclusive emphasis on the social and political elements of the conflicts surrounding the bull, major scholars of Jansenism have lately advocated an approach that 1 See the review article by William H.
