MISCELLANEOUS. KLISABET NEY. We publish in this number, as our frontispiece, a photogravure of Schopen- hauer's bust made by Elisabet Ney, a disciple of Rauch, and one of our most prom- inent American artists, who, before she came to the United States, acquired an en- viable European fame. She has modelled from life the busts of many famous men of science, were Humboldt, among whom Jacob Grimm, and Liebig ; of statesmen and heroes, among them Bismarck and Garibaldi ; of artists, among these Kaul- bach and Joachim ; of kings, among these George of Hanover, and a statue of Lud- wig II. of Bavaria, now at the celebrated castle of Linderhoff, etc,, etc. While she lived at Frankfort in 1859, Schopenhauer had not yet attained to the fame of his later years, but Elisabet Ney was interested in the great prophet of pessimism. She was well acquainted with his works, and foresaw the influence which the grumbling misanthrope would wield over all generations to come. She knew very well that he was a woman hater who thought that women could never accomplish anything either in science or in the arts. But this only made her find it the more attractive and humorous to converse with him and prove to him what women could do. Schopenhauer was very much impressed with the young sculptress, and con- fessed to friends of his, as seen in many of his printed letters, that she was an ex- ception to the rule. While he was sitting to have his bust taken, he was as a rule animated and full of interesting gossip, mostly of a philosophical nature. -

Strategic Fiscal Review 2020-21- House Public Service Non-Formula Support Items Overview and Significant Findings 1. Public Service Items. Public Service items are non-formula support items generally categorized under the Public Service Objective in the budget structures of institutions of higher education. Public Service items are programs established primarily to provide non- instructional services beneficial to individuals and groups external to the institution, and are funded in the bill patterns of every public university system, including The University of Texas System, Texas A&M University System, Texas Tech University System, University of North Texas System, University of Houston System, and Texas State University System, as well as independent institutions and the Public Community and Junior Colleges. Public Service items are identified through the strategic planning and budget structure process, in which institutions categorize non-formula support item strategies under bill pattern objectives and receive approval or disapproval of any budget structure changes from the LBB and the Governor's Office. 2. Scope of Review. For Strategic Fiscal Review, there are 106 non-formula support items that are identified as Public Service. Of these 106 items: 95 are at the General Academic Institutions: . 32 at The University of Texas System; . 20 at the Texas A&M System; . 7 at the University of Houston System; . 2 at the University of North Texas System; . 8 at the Texas Tech University System; . 18 at the Texas State University System; and . 8 at independent institutions. 5 are at the Health Related Institutions: . 1 at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; . 1 at Texas A&M University System Health Science Center; and . -

Clear streams babble below rock cliffs. Wildfl owers blanket valleys in a full spectrum of color. Such scenic beauty stirs the spirit in the Texas Hill Country Trail Region. The area is rich in culture and mystique, from fl ourishing vineyards and delectable cuisines to charming small towns with a compelling blend of diversity in heritage and history. The region’s 19 counties form the hilly eastern half of the Edwards Plateau. The curving Balcones Escarpment defi nes the region’s eastern and southern boundaries. Granite outcroppings in the Llano Uplift mark its northern edge. The region includes two major cities, Austin and San Antonio, and dozens of captivating communities with historic downtowns. Millions of years ago, geologic forces uplifted the plateau, followed by eons of erosion that carved out hills more than 2,000 feet in elevation. Water fi ltered through limestone bedrock, shaping caverns and vast aquifers feeding into the many Hill Country region rivers that create a recreational paradise. Scenic beauty, Small–town charm TxDOT TxDOT Paleoindian hunter-gatherers roamed the region during prehistoric times. Water and wildlife later attracted Tonkawa, Apache and Comanche tribes, along with other nomads who hunted bison and antelope. Eighteenth-century Spanish soldiers and missionaries established a presidio and fi ve missions in San Antonio, which became the capital of Spanish Texas. Native American presence deterred settlements during the era when Texas was part of New Spain and, later, Mexico. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 16 EAST TEXAS HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION DAVID CROCKETT'S VISIT TO THE RED RIVER VALLEY by Skipper Steely The Red River Valley west of the Great Bend saw basically three waves ofAmerican Anglo settlers arriving between 1815 and 1836. Those who came during the five years before the Mississippi Choctaw Treaty of Doak's Stand (1820) were the first. Many of this group moved to southeast Texas. About eighty other families joined Stephen F. Austin when their land claims north of the Red River were given to the incoming Indians. The second wave of Americans arrived at the American settlements during the next decade, joining relatives and former friends who remained in what was called Miller County, Arkansas Territory. This governmental entity, once a part ofthe large Hempstead County, was after 1828 located south of the Red River, stretching from the Great Bend as far west as civilization expanded, or basically to what is now Fannin County. -

NARRATIVE TEXTS NARRATIVE TEXTS Elisabet Ney, Sculptor, 1833-1907 Elisabet Ney baffled her neighbors in Hempstead, Texas. She was German, aloof, and unsociable. She wore odd clothes—long, flowing robes like a goddess of antiquity, bloomers, even trousers for horseback riding around her plantation. She liked to sleep outdoors in a hammock. She would not eat meat. She and her male companion went by different last names, although they appeared to be the parents of two little boys. Gossip did not bother Elisabet. Few realized that in Europe she had sculpted the images of famous men: Schopenhauer, Garibaldi, Bismarck, King Ludwig II of Bavaria. In Heidelberg she met Edmund Montgomery, a Scottish medical student who shared her liberal philosophy. The two married legally but kept their status a private matter. Elisabet apparently was participating in political intrigue when events forced the couple to leave Europe hastily in 870.2 They settled first in Georgia, where their first son was born, then traveled through the upper Midwest seeking a more compatible milieu. They had a second child and were living in Texas by 873, where little Arthur, not quite two years old, died of diphtheria. Elisabet made a plaster death mask, then burned his body to prevent the spread of disease. This incident gave rise to dark rumors about her behavior.3 For 20 years Elisabet devoted herself to raising her younger son, Lorne, but he ultimately disappointed her by marrying a young woman whom Elisabet considered unworthy.4 Finally she received commissions to sculpt again. Repository: DRT Collection at Texas A&M University-San Antonio Biographical Note From the Handbook of Texas Online: Franzisca Bernadina Wilhelmina Elisabeth Ney, one of the first professional sculptors in Texas, was born in Münster, Westphalia, on 1833 January 26 to Johann Adam and Anna Elizabeth (Wernze) Ney, a Catholic stonecarver and his wife. Ney enrolled at the Munich Academy of Art in 1852 and, after her graduation two years later, moved to Berlin, where she studied with Christian Daniel Rauch, one of the foremost sculptors in Europe in the mid-nineteenth century. Under Rauch's tutelage, Ney developed a classical style in the German tradition, with a tendency toward realism and a faithfulness to accurate scale. Through Rauch, she also became acquainted with Berlin's artistic and intellectual elite and sculpted her first works, among them portraits of such luminaries as Jacob Grimm and Alexander von Humboldt. -

Great Films and How They Shaped American Politics: Manifest Destiny in Texas Aurora Terry Lanier Middle School INTRODUCTION Manifest Destiny is the idea that the United States was destined to be a two-ocean country. U.S. presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and James K. Polk, helped bring this idea to fruition. These presidents went to great lengths to make the geography of the United States the size that it is today. The consequences of this westward push were very severe, including war and the near extermination of the Native American people. Over time, the American people have tried to justify these actions. They say that history is written by the victors, and this is definitely the case when we consider what “necessary evils” were committed in order to assimilate the lands of the United States of America. The justifications behind these aggressive actions have been portrayed historically in many different ways, especially in the movies. There are many different films that have shown both sides of the story of Manifest Destiny, and they are a great way for students to explore early American politics. The focus of the unit is Manifest Destiny in Texas. Although westward expansion was not limited to Texas, the state became a microcosm of the process between 1836 and 1895. I teach seventh-grade Texas History, so this unit will be perfect for teaching the broad subject of U.S. expansion while illustrating its effects on the state of Texas. By being presented through film specific examples and stories of the effects of Manifest Destiny on their home state, students will be inculcated with a greater sense of relevancy of the subject matter.
