THE PADDLER’S TRAIL It may be a bit of a drive from “down south,” but a north country paddle rewards paddlers with great fishing, mountain vistas, and plenty of peace and solitude. DAY 1: Put in at Arlin Brook. This is an unmarked access on state owned land, across the road from the visitor center on Rte 3, two miles north of Colebrook. If you are feeling really adventurous, travel 7 miles north and put in at the access in Canaan, VT. Paddle about 4.25 miles through quick water to Holbrook Point, a campsite with room for about 3 tents. DAY 2: Paddle 14 miles to Lyman Falls. Adjacent to the old Lyman Falls dam, now breached, the property provides access to some of the finest PADDLING trout fishing in and hosts several outstanding primitive canoe campsites. There are over 350 maple syrup producers across New Hampshire and Vermont. Many of the North Country sugar houses will open to the public during the annual Maple Weekends in March. You’ll be able to meet the maple producers who make all your favorite syrups, maple candies, doughnuts, and more. Nulhegan Basin Division- Vermont Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge The Nulhegan Basin Division is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to preserve and protect a diverse assemblage of plants and animals. The Wildlife Refuge is in the remote corner of Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom. The Division’s headquarters and visitor center are located on Route 105 in Brunswick (about 10 miles east of Island Pond). The visitor center and exhibits are open 365 days a year, from 8AM to 4:30PM, and are free and open to the public.
