Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a Two-Part Series Hosted by Journalist Maria Bartiromo
ITALIAN AMERICANS OF AND FEBRUARY 2015 NEW YORK NEW JERSEY The largest Italian American population in the United States influences many vibrant and ever-evolving neighborhoods of New York and New Jersey. To celebrate the lives, achievements, and culture Italian Americans have brought to the metro area, WLIW21 is presenting Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a two-part series hosted by journalist Maria Bartiromo. The series, a companion program to the PBS broadcast The Italian Americans (Thursdays, February 19 & 26 at 9pm), highlights this large community’s rich culture and influence, featuring interviews with experts in Italian-American history and culture and prominent Italian Americans, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, chef Lidia Bastianich, the late Governor of New York Mario Cuomo, singer Tony Bennett, actress Susan Lucci, former New York Senator Al D’Amato, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, journalist Steve Adubato, actor Joe Piscopo, and many others. The program is further enhanced by the personal stories, videos, and photos viewers have shared on the Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey webpage (thirteen.org/italian-americans-ny-nj). Host Maria Bartiromo (left) shares a moving testimonial about her Italian-American heritage and childhood in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where her family owned a restaurant called Rex Manor that was named after the boat that took her grandfather, Carmine — a brick layer from Salerno, Italy — to America in 1919. Working at The Rex was a true family affair for the Bartiromos and an invaluable lesson for young Maria about the importance of having a strong work ethic. -

Kuac Pbs Kids 24/7 Services
KUAC PBS KIDS 24/7 SERVICES OVERVIEW PBS has launched new free 24/7 multiplatform children’s services. Provided by local stations, the free services include a new TV channel, a live stream on digital platforms and an interactive gaming feature, which will debut later in 2017. Together, these new services support KUAC’s mission to reach all children with high-quality educational content. These new services offer the very best child and parent experience, increasing access to award-winning PBS KIDS content, especially for those who need it the most, when it is most convenient. Starting June 5, 2017 KUAC will broadcast PBS KIDS shows 24 hours a day on KUAC 9.5 and offer a live stream, making it easy for children to watch their favorite series during primetime and other after-school hours when viewing among children is high. Viewers can watch the station-branded live stream through pbskids.org and on the PBS KIDS Video App, which is available on a variety of mobile devices and tablets. On-demand clips and full episodes continue to be available for free on the PBS KIDS Video App and pbskids.org. Streaming on pbskids.org accounts for over a third of all time spent watching kids videos online and the site is #1 in the kids’ category for total views and minutes spent.i Across digital platforms, PBS KIDS averages 363.2 million streams per month.ii Later this year, the live stream experience will expand to offer an integrated games feature, enabling children to toggle between a PBS KIDS show and an activity that extends learning – all in one seamless digital experience. -

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY F Y15 INSPIRING A SMARTER WORLD Dear Friends, FY 2015 was a year of challenges and great opportunities, and a turning point in KCTS 9’s 60-year history. I am happy to share that the year has been a success. Your support has allowed us to meet our goal of providing meaningful content that is relevant to our community—on air, online and in person. The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with fundamental changes in the way audiences choose and view content. Today, more than one in three visitors to KCTS9.org use a tablet or mobile device to connect with us. Five years ago, that figure was less than 5 percent. With new tools and technologies, the public has become actively involved in the creation, selection and distribution of content. We live in a world where time-shifted viewing, streaming video, tablets and smartphones have profoundly changed how audiences consume and share content. How does a public media organization stand out when, with today’s technology, everyone is a media company? We met this challenge by launching an initiative to produce innovative digital offerings that broaden the content we provide and the platforms on which we provide it. While staying true to our mission to inspire a smarter world, we shifted to a digital-first strategy. We are committed to creating, commissioning and curating local content with a continued adherence to the public-media beliefs that have defined KCTS 9 for 60 years. In FY 2015, we brought you live public dialogues including political debates and election coverage; a current affairs series that explores in depth stories from across the Northwest; local specials on environmental issues; community events that celebrate our diverse cultures; and educational programming that is free and accessible to all. -

THE QUEER FEET G. K. Chesterton If you meet a member of that select club, "The Twelve True Fishermen," entering the Vernon Hotel for the annual club dinner, you will observe, as he takes off his overcoat, that his evening coat is green and not black. If (supposing that you have the star-defying audacity to address such a being) you ask him why, he will probably answer that he does it to avoid being mistaken for a waiter. You will then retire crushed. But you will leave behind you a mystery as yet unsolved and a tale worth telling. If (to pursue the same vein of improbable conjecture) you were to meet a mild, hard-working little priest, named Father Brown, and were to ask him what he thought was the most singular luck of his life, he would probably reply that upon the whole his best stroke was at the Vernon Hotel, where he had averted a crime and, perhaps, saved a soul, merely by listening to a few footsteps in a passage. He is perhaps a little proud of this wild and wonderful guess of his, and it is possible that he might refer to it. But since it is immeasurably unlikely that you will ever rise high enough in the social world to find "The Twelve True Fishermen," or that you will ever sink low enough among slums and criminals to find Father Brown, I fear you will never hear the story at all unless you hear it from me. The Vernon Hotel at which The Twelve True Fishermen held their annual dinners was an institution such as can only exist in an oligarchical society which has almost gone mad on good manners. -
