    REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY F Y15 INSPIRING A SMARTER WORLD Dear Friends, FY 2015 was a year of challenges and great opportunities, and a turning point in KCTS 9’s 60-year history. I am happy to share that the year has been a success. Your support has allowed us to meet our goal of providing meaningful content that is relevant to our community—on air, online and in person. The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with fundamental changes in the way audiences choose and view content. Today, more than one in three visitors to KCTS9.org use a tablet or mobile device to connect with us. Five years ago, that figure was less than 5 percent. With new tools and technologies, the public has become actively involved in the creation, selection and distribution of content. We live in a world where time-shifted viewing, streaming video, tablets and smartphones have profoundly changed how audiences consume and share content. How does a public media organization stand out when, with today’s technology, everyone is a media company? We met this challenge by launching an initiative to produce innovative digital offerings that broaden the content we provide and the platforms on which we provide it. While staying true to our mission to inspire a smarter world, we shifted to a digital-first strategy. We are committed to creating, commissioning and curating local content with a continued adherence to the public-media beliefs that have defined KCTS 9 for 60 years. In FY 2015, we brought you live public dialogues including political debates and election coverage; a current affairs series that explores in depth stories from across the Northwest; local specials on environmental issues; community events that celebrate our diverse cultures; and educational programming that is free and accessible to all.

    Open to the Public: 2013 Programming • Complaint about NOVA Received on January 3, 2013 from NM Dear Sirs, Your NOVA: Doomsday Volcanoes program contained distortions and was poorly produced and edited. NOVA programs in general have deteriorated over the years, and this one exemplifies what is wrong: lack of knowledge and recognized expertise, and "cutesy" production values with rapid-fire image changes and split framing. This program (and most any other NOVA program) is like an experiment designed to produce psychosis from relentless flashing lights. As for content, the Icelandic volcanoes are not sensational news, although your producers seem to think so. They were apparently blind to the fact that your program was used by the interviewees as a vehicle to beg for funding. I conclude from this that your producers are inexperienced, or non-scientists, or both. There are volcanoes all over the globe and many represent imminent danger. Icelandic volcanoes are not unique in this aspect, and to imply that doom is imminent because of them is a distortion. Disruption of commercial air travel is not "doom", nor is ashfall onto agricultural lands, or even ash cleanup in places like England or France. Your program clearly showed that the Icelanders have been living among the volcanoes for generations. Is drunk driving a "doomsday" scenario? It kills far more than volcanoes. You failed to point out there were zero fatalities from the eruption of Eyjafjallajkull in 2010, but you freely extrapolate to "doom" from eruptions on the order of 10 times that size. In summary, I hope your producers and their crew had a nice trip to Iceland in summer, but next time they should invite a couple of recognized experts, for perspective on just how dangerous these volcanoes are relative to others, or relative to other natural hazards such as seimicity or tsunami.
