GETTING MAY 2017 SCIENTIFIC t the nexus of innovation, SciTech Now, WLIW’s local half-hour program, explores the boundaries of Ascience and the impact that it has on headlining issues that influence the nation and the world. Every Monday, the series dives into topical questions about science, the environment and technology from across the nation in a content-sharing system that introduces viewers to local innovation and advancements, helping them learn about issues affecting their fellow Americans. With an average of four segments in each production, SciTech Now navigates a variety of topics reflecting the interests of diverse communities. The May 1 episode visits a cathedral in Raleigh that uses acoustic engineering to better their sound quality, investigates the technology that monitors pipeline leaks and explores what happens to ecosystems when failures occur, jumps to Salt Lake City for a look at pelican migration patterns, and finishes in Detroit for a talk with General Motors’ first female CEO about women in the STEM industry. SciTech Now also promotes local stories in the tri-state region. On May 8, Adam Cole of NPR’s Skunk Bear (pictured top-right) joins SciTech Now host Hari Sreenivasan to discuss hydras, a freshwater animal that may hold the key to the fountain of youth. That same program also spotlights a local exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (located on Manhattan’s Museum Mile), exploring how collaborative designs can challenge social and economic inequality [Fans can dive further into Cooper-Hewitt with a recent Treasures of New York episode (wliw.org/treasures)]. And in a segment on May 15, SciTech Now reveals how an initiative called “Sounds of New York City” is helping to curb NEW EPISODES MONDAYS AT 7:30PM the cacophony and “urban irritants” of New York City streets, from Learn more at scitechnow.org construction workers drilling to blaring sirens. BRITS FROM PAST TO PRESENT “A flat-out brilliant portrait of a monarch in crisis.” – The New York Times. The BBC and Masterpiece bring a television adaptation of the critically-acclaimed and Tony-nominated play King Charles III to WLIW21. Helmed by the original creative team and starring members of the Broadway cast, the play imagines Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death (Monday, May 15 at 9pm). Joanne Froggatt makes a sharp departure from Downton Abbey’s sweet Anna Bates in spine-tingling drama Dark Angel (Monday, May 22 at 9pm). Dispensing death from the spout of a warm teapot, the Emmy Award- winning actress plays notorious Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton, Britain’s first female serial killer.
