The New Mexico State Film Office today announced that the USA Network television series, “Briarpatch” produced by UCP (Universal Content Productions) and Paramount Television will begin principal photography mid-June through the end of September in Albuquerque. Starring Rosario Dawson, who will also serve as a producer, the production will employ approximately 100 New Mexico crew members and 250-350 New Mexico background talent per episode. “Briarpatch” follows Allegra Dill (Dawson), a dogged investigator returning to her border- town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The season celebrates the beloved genres represented by Thomas’ book -- a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction -- while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation. Based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name, “Briarpatch” is written for television by Andy Greenwald, who will executive produce along with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. The series also stars Jay R. In January through March of 2004, Sweet Auburn was studied as a part of the ‘Eastside / Auburn Avenue’ Focus Area, one of five such areas included in the “Imagine Downtown” planning and visioning process. An Eastside / Auburn Core Team of institutions, businesses, property owners and residents in the area was convened to review existing conditions, define issues for discussion, review plan products and prioritize implementation steps. In addition, one-on-one interviews were held with many of the stakeholders in the corridor and over 60 people participated in the Community Workshop held on December 9, 2003. Focus Area Context The Eastside/ Auburn Avenue Focus Area is located just east of Atlanta’s Central Business District. The Auburn corridor is approximately one mile long, anchored by a high-density commercial area around Peachtree Street on the west and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site (NHS) on the east. John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Edgewood Avenue form the northern and southern boundaries of the Focus Area, which is about six blocks at its widest point where in jogs along Gilmore Street to include a part of Grady Hospital. -

Counterinsurgency in the Algerian Revolution and the Iraq Surge
ABSTRACT Learning Lackluster Lessons: Counterinsurgency in the Algerian Revolution and the Iraq Surge Patrick Kerry Ormsby Director: Dr. David A. Smith Ph.D. Modern American History The Algerian Revolution provided two distinct avenues for approaching irregular, population centric conflicts typical of the post-World War II world. Captain David Galula’s counterinsurgency campaign (1956-58) provided the blueprint for a hearts-and- minds counterinsurgency, while the Battle of Algiers (1956-57) displayed a more brutal approach that garnered short-term results at great strategic costs. Writers of modern American counterinsurgency doctrine purposefully drew from the former and inadvertently from the latter but removing the tactics making it “effective.” False historical narratives unfortunately clouded Galula’s campaign which had fundamental shortcomings undiscussed in his memoirs. Additionally, several noteworthy hearts-and- minds counterinsurgencies proved to bear more similarity with the brutal approach. The Iraq Surge (2007), the first practical application of modern American counterinsurgency doctrine and an example of progression in that it did not feature torture, owned fundamental flaws not only unique to it but also others eerily similar to those within French counterinsurgency campaigns in Algeria.
