THE WOMAN IN THE BIG HAT by Baroness Orczy 2 XI. SIR JEREMIAH'S WILL XII. THE END LADY MOLLY OF SCOTLAND YARD I THE NINESCORE MYSTERY WELL, you know, some say she is the daughter of a duke, others that she was born in the gutter, and that the handle has been soldered on to her name in order to give her style and influence. I could say a lot, of course, but "my lips are sealed," as the poets say. All through her successful career at the Yard she honoured me with her friendship and confidence, but when she took me in partnership, as it were, she made me promise that I would never breathe a word of her private life, and this I swore on my Bible oath--"wish I may die," and all the rest of it. Yes, we always called her "my lady," from the moment that she was put at the head of our section; and the chief called her "Lady Molly" in our presence. We of the Female Department are dreadfully snubbed by the men, though don't tell me that women have not ten times as much intuition as the blundering and sterner sex; my firm belief is that we shouldn't have half so many undetected crimes if some of the so-called mysteries were put to the test of feminine investigation.

© PA Images STATE OF POLICINGOF STATE Foreword This is my report to the Secretary of State under section 54 of the Police Act 1996. It contains my assessment of the efectiveness FOREWORD and efciency of policing in England and Wales, based on the inspections we carried out between April 2018 and May 2019. My report on the efectiveness and efciency of fire and rescue services in England will be published separately. This report’s structure and purpose Part 1 contains my assessment of the state of policing in England and Wales. In making my assessment, I have drawn on the inspections we carried out over the past year, as well as the fndings and reports of other organisations, and other information and analysis available to me. Part 2 gives an overview of the fndings of the inspections we carried out between 1 April 2018 and 2 May 2019, including a summary of our police effciency, effectiveness and legitimacy (PEEL) inspections. Part 3 sets out the full list of our inspections and other work in the year in question. The results of our individual inspections enable an assessment of the performance of individual forces, or a more general assessment of performance in specifc aspects of policing. I hope that people, including the public, who hold policing to account will draw on the overall conclusions in this report just as much as they draw on the specifc conclusions we have reached for each force. 6 STATE OF POLICINGOF STATE FOREWORD © Sussex Police Changes to our PEEL programme Inspection is a continuous process of design, monitoring and reporting; it isn’t just when we have ‘boots on the ground’.

  • A Walk Through Westminster
A walk through Westminster Updated: 8 March 2019 Length: About 2¼ miles Duration: Around 3½ hours BACKGROUND Westminster has been at the centre of religion, royalty and political power for over a thousand years, and this walk covers each of these. The original area on which the Houses of Parliament and the Abbey were built lies on what was called Thorney Island. This was just marshy land where the River Tyburn, which rises in Hampstead, flowed into the Thames. It is known as the ‘City of Westminster’ because for a short while the Abbey was classified as a cathedral – in the same way that the City of London is called a city because of St Paul’s. (The reason for it being called a cathedral is further explained in the notes and appendix.) WHERE TO START THE WALK The walk starts outside Westminster tube station, which is served by the Jubilee, Circle and District Lines. The station was rebuilt to accommodate the Jubilee Line in a rather futuristic and ‘brutalist’ style of architecture (which in this instance I rather like). There are also numerous bus routes that serve the area. 1 BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE WALK … A few words on the River Thames and Westminster Bridge The bridge and the River Thames are just 100 yards or so away from the station, where the walk begins. So, if you would like to take a look at them first, then leave the station via Exit 1. Cross the Embankment, passing the statue of Boadicea and her daughters on a chariot. It was erected in in 1902, though not without some controversy as although she may have ‘tried to defend our shores by attacking the Roman invaders’, in doing so she hung, burnt and crucified tens of thousands of innocent people.
