Morgan Professor Laura Wagner Copyright by Juliana De la Mora 2011 ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I analyze the Spanish ingestive verbs comer ‘eat’ and beber/tomar ‘drink’ that variably occur with the pronoun SE and its person/number variants. Many scholars (De Miguel and Fernandez Lagunilla 2000; Nishida 1994; Sanz 2000; Zagona 1996) have claimed that SE is an aspectual marker, and its use imposes a completive interpretation; on this view SE can only occur with telic predicates. However, it is possible to find examples that show that the alternation between SE-marked and non- SE-marked constructions is not only constrained by aspectual-related factors, but also by other factors such as the degree of individuation of the object (cf. Hopper and Thompson 1980) (1) and the (counter)expectations of the speaker (2): (1) Ayer vi a Sergio, (#SE) estaba comiendo unos tacos pero todavía no le servían ‘Yesterday I saw Sergio, he was about to (#SE) eat some tacos but they hadn’t been served yet’ (2) a. Marta se comió diez tacos de lengua b. #Marta comió diez tacos de lengua ‘Marta (#SE) ate ten tongue tacos’ ii Maldonado (2000) and Clements (2006) have argued that the use of SE in transitive constructions increases the transitivity of the event. Previous variationist studies of Spanish variable SE marking in motion verbs (Aaron and Torres Cacoullos 2005; Torres Cacoullos and Schwenter 2008) have revealed a set of linguistic factors that contribute to the variability. Among these are clause type, subject expression, grammatical person, tense-mood-aspect and polarity. Thus, a confluence of pragmatic and aspectual factors has been claimed to be relevant to variable SE-marking in Spanish, but qualitative studies cannot explain the myriad of factors determining this variation and their interactions. Following the variationist method, I analyzed variable SE-marking in ingestive verbs in different dialects of Spanish. My analysis of 3958 tokens from spoken and written corpora revealed non-edible/drinkable objects, highly definite and specific objects, non-human subjects, affirmative polarity, grammatical number and object position favor the SE-marked forms of comer and tomar. These results also reveal that the verb beber disfavors SE-marking. Analysis of the data presented in this dissertation reveals that variable SE marking in Spanish is constrained by pragmatic factors such as animacy and counter-expectations associated with subjectivity and it is also constrained by grammatical factors associated with transitivity. I claim that the so-called aspectual SE is a non-canonical marker with a pragmatic function and a grammatical function. The pragmatic function of SE is to mark non-canonical events (either the events themselves or any of the participants) and the grammatical function of SE is to mark non-canonical transitive clauses that correspond to highly transitive clauses. iii Results also reveal that the meaning of SE is determined in conjunction with the lexical/semantic properties of the verb and not by overarching properties of a generalized SE construction as suggested in prior qualitative research. These results, along with the findings reported by Torres Cacoullos and Schwenter (2008) and Aaron and Torres Cacoullos (2005), suggest that the choice of SE-marked constructions over non-SE- marked constructions is pragmatically driven. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Este trabajo no hubiera sido posible sin la colaboración de muchas personas.     Chapter 6 Mirativity and the Bulgarian evidential system Elena Karagjosova Freie Universität Berlin This paper provides an account of the Bulgarian admirative construction andits place within the Bulgarian evidential system based on (i) new observations on the morphological, temporal, and evidential properties of the admirative, (ii) a criti- cal reexamination of existing approaches to the Bulgarian evidential system, and (iii) insights from a similar mirative construction in Spanish. I argue in particular that admirative sentences are assertions based on evidence of some sort (reporta- tive, inferential, or direct) which are contrasted against the set of beliefs held by the speaker up to the point of receiving the evidence; the speaker’s past beliefs entail a proposition that clashes with the assertion, triggering belief revision and resulting in a sense of surprise. I suggest an analysis of the admirative in terms of a mirative operator that captures the evidential, temporal, aspectual, and modal properties of the construction in a compositional fashion. The analysis suggests that although mirativity and evidentiality can be seen as separate semantic cate- gories, the Bulgarian admirative represents a cross-linguistically relevant case of a mirative extension of evidential verbal forms. After watching animated movies with complete, incomplete and unstarted actions, the participants were asked questions with a perfective or imperfective verb form and responded by pointing to the event(s) that corresponded to each question. The results converged to a clear developmental trend in understanding of aspectual forms. The data indicate that the acquisition of perfective precedes the acquisition of imperfective: 3-year-olds typically understand only the meaning of perfective; most 5-year-olds have almost adult-like understanding of both aspectual forms, while 4-year-olds are a transitional group. Our results support the viewpoint that children's and adults’ representations of this language category differ qualitatively, and we argue that mastering of aspect semantics is a long-term process that presupposes a certain level of cognitive and pragmatic development, and lasts throughout the preschool period. Cormier et al. (1999) discusses locus agreement in ASL, which is the first work in the HPSG framework. However, their work is limited to locus agreement with singular arguments. This paper examines person and number verb agreement. One type of verb shows agreement with object or/and subject arguments. Main focus in this paper is to show what constraints agreement verbs have, to explain the subject/object-verb agreement.

Yudovina University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands From Grammatical Number 2 Abstract This study examines whether singular/plural marking in a language helps children learn the cardinal meanings of the words ‘one,’ ‘two,’ and ‘three.’ First, CHILDES data in English, Russian (which marks singular/plural), and Japanese (which does not) were compared for frequency, variability, and contexts of number-word use. Then, groups of monolingual children (ages 2-10 to 3-6) in the USA, Russia, and Japan were tested on Counting and Give-N tasks. More English and Russian learners knew the meaning of each word than Japanese learners, regardless of whether singular/plural cues appeared in the task itself (e.g., “Give two apples” vs. “Give two”). Authors conclude that the earliest number-word meanings come from the conceptual framework of grammatical number, rather than of positive integers.
