Coffee and Class for the Swedes – as seen in the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson: Coffee as materiality Åsa Ljungström Independent researcher In the Millennium Trilogy coffee and class express the paradox of the dream of a classless society denying the divisiveness of class affiliation in Sweden. Coffee is used to create affinity while the consumption of other kinds of food and drink is used to subtly mark social hierarchies. Swedish people like to believe that it is possible for anyone to climb the social ladder; equality is the ideal since the 1960s. Having a coffee works to level the communication between people IRL as well as in the novels. The author uses the coffee as a formula to get the storyline going, introduce new characters or forecast events. Not until the New York Times’ columnist wrote about the pathological coffee consumption did the Swedes notice. The Swedes will have a coffee during a break at work, at home, with a friend, or whenever they open communication. The serving of coffee makes a self-evident statement in any group. Drawing on theory of materiality and presence the presentation aims to analyse coffee running through the human bodies creating chains of communication. Anything is possible with a coffee for Stieg Larsson’s characters coping with the morale of good and evil, black and white. -

PLAYING THE GREAT WAR Giaime Alonge & Riccardo Fassone985 (University of Turin, Italy) World War One during analog wargame’s golden age Game scholar Stewart Woods divides board games in three main categories. 1) Classical games, such as Chess or Checkers -very old games, so old that they have no author, and therefore are not copyrighted. 2) Mass-market games such as Monopoly (1933) or Scrabble (1935). 3) Hobby games- niche games such as Dungeons & Dragons (1974) or Magic: The Gathering (1993), that are enjoyed by relatively small, but highly devoted groups of players986. Wargame is one of the thinnest niches in the universe of hobby games. A wargame is a «realistic» simulation of warfare. We will shortly address the question of what we mean by «realistic», but before that, we must make another premise. In this paper, by «wargame» we will only mean recreational simulations. We will not consider the professional simulations that staff officers of many armies and navies around the globe regularly hold in order to study possible scenarios of war.987 It is a practice that was introduced in the early nineteenth century, in Prussia, where generals started to prepare their future campaigns with a «game» called Kriegsspiel988. -

1 The Millennium Trilogy and the American Serial Killer Narrative: Investigating Protagonists of Men Who Write Women Barbara Fister Draft of a chapter published in Rape in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy: Contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone Crime Fiction edited by Berit Åström, Katarina Gregersdotter, and Tanya Horck (Palgrave, 2013, 34-50.) Readers in the United States were the last among residents of developed nations to discover the Millennium Trilogy. Even though the books were international bestsellers, publishers were reluctant to launch them in the American market, uncertain about their audience appeal. Sonny Mehta, legendary editor and publisher at Knopf, eventually acquired the books and gave them a significant marketing push, but later confessed he had had reservations, saying ‘I had nightmares that we would be the only country where it didn’t work’ (McGrath 2010). American readers, who embrace the short chapters and fast-paced, reality-lite storylines of James Patterson and Dan Brown, seemed an unlikely consumer market for thrillers that take their time developing a story, express leftist political views, and are translations set in a foreign country. There was precedent for Mehta’s concern; globally bestselling authors such as Ian Rankin and Henning Mankell had not found as receptive an audience in the United States as they had elsewhere. Yet the trilogy became phenomenally popular in the US, just as it had in countries around the world. Why did it succeed against the odds? When describing the appeal of the books, readers in online discussions, blog posts, and reviews repeatedly attribute its appeal to the girl of the title. -
Article Surveillance and the Body in the Millennium Trilogy
Surveillance and the Body in the Millennium Article Trilogy Jeff W. Marker University of North Georgia, USA [email protected] Abstract A growing discourse in surveillance studies is leading the field away from socially neutral theories and introducing methodologies that account for factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, class, and sexual orientation. However, scholarship on surveillance in the arts, among which voyeurism and panopticism remain dominant, has been slower to adopt models that address these sociological dimensions of surveillance. This interdisciplinary article argues for expanding the theoretical and sociological scope of scholarship on surveillance in the arts, using Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novels and the Swedish films adapted from them as a case study. This series of narratives features three scopic regimes: the state’s surveillance apparatus, the protagonist’s own surveillant gaze, and the male gaze, each of which operates on and through the body of the central character, Lisbeth Salander. These representations, as so many others, demand that we break away from the panoptic model and employ a theoretically intersectional approach. The author integrates theories from surveillance studies, feminist film theory, and the social sciences to develop such an approach. Constant developments in surveillance technology, practice, and policy have driven surveillance studies to evolve rapidly in recent decades. That evolution has also been driven by the need to reconsider the theoretical foundations and sociological scope on which the discipline is built, a necessity cited by numerous scholars, including Kevin Haggerty, Mark Andrejevic, and Catherine Zimmer. As Zimmer puts it, surveillance studies “has contended with the need to move beyond the conceptual framework of panopticism that has defined the field,” and she is far from alone in voicing this criticism (Zimmer 2015: 15). -

Through writing about international political themes, Larsson successfully tells a tale of a female heroine, Lisbeth Salander, who overcomes her tragic destiny. Originally written in Swedish, Larsson creates a cultural assimilation through writing about universal themes, such as computer hacking and crimes against humanity. The three novels, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest are together called the Millennium Trilogy , and after only 6 years of publication, sold more than 65 million copies in more than 44 different languages. -

Meeting Triumph and Disaster by Paul Comben Meeting Triumph and Disaster The Gaming Ups and Downs of Famous Battles by Paul Comben 10-Sep-2015 In a roundabout sort of way, this article was inspired by something Mark Herman said at the beginning of one of his YouTube films. In the course of introducing an engaging dissertation on Empire of the Sun, he referred to a particularly close struggle that had only been decided on the last play of the game. I readily took the inference to be that the parties involved had really enjoyed the experience, and of course, we have all been there at some part in our hobby lives – a game that goes down to the last throw, the last move, and then concludes with us on the right side or the wrong side of the design’s victory evaluation. How we feel about that will probably vary quite a lot, depending on whether the game truly entertained and challenged us up to that point, and whether we feel the result is appropriate to the historical context of whatever we were playing. Things can go wrong – we might feel we were more pitted against the system than our actual opponent, or that in some other way the result has been far too contrived. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with winning (or losing) at the last gasp if the thresholds have been appropriately set, and if we are sensible enough to enjoy the experience of seeing our hopes and ambitions falter around a vista of sunk ships, dead leaders and routed whatevers. -
