  • Incendiary 'Girl Who Played with Fire'
Kathleen Quinlan talks about her role in the mysterious and dark drama 'After' REVIEW: Incendiary 'Girl Who Played With Fire' July 22, 2010 "The Girl Who Played With Fire" is a sequel that's every bit as good as the original, and unlike many sequels, it stands on its own very well. Based on the second novel in Swedish writer Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" continues the story Jim Dixon of the relationship between journalist Capital District Movies Examiner Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nykvist) and | Follow: brilliant computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), a girl with a very dark past. Mikael Blomkvist is about to run a story that will expose an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden, implicating well-known and highly placed members of Swedish society. On the eve of publication, the two investigating reporters are murdered and the fingerprints Noomi Rapace in "Girl Who Played With Fire" Photo: Music Box Films (c) 2010 found on the murder weapon belong to Lisbeth Salander. In "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Blomkvist was facing jail and disgrace and was bailed out by Lisbeth. The tables are turned in "The Girl Who Played With Fire," in which more of Lisbeth's dark, scarred past is revealed. As with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," abuse of women by men is a prevalent theme. (The novel "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was first published as "Men Who Hate Women" in Sweden.) Noomi Rapace reprises her role as Lisbeth Salander from "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" for which she won the Best Actress Guldbagge Award (Sweden’s Oscar).

  • As Seen in the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson: Coffee As Materiality
Paper from the conference On the Move: ACSIS conference 11–13 June, Norrköping, Sweden 2013, organised by the Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS). Conference Proceedings published by Linköping University Electronic Press at http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp_home/index.en.aspx?issue=095. © The Author. Coffee and Class for the Swedes – as seen in the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson: Coffee as materiality Åsa Ljungström Independent researcher In the Millennium Trilogy coffee and class express the paradox of the dream of a classless society denying the divisiveness of class affiliation in Sweden. Coffee is used to create affinity while the consumption of other kinds of food and drink is used to subtly mark social hierarchies. Swedish people like to believe that it is possible for anyone to climb the social ladder; equality is the ideal since the 1960s. Having a coffee works to level the communication between people IRL as well as in the novels. The author uses the coffee as a formula to get the storyline going, introduce new characters or forecast events. Not until the New York Times’ columnist wrote about the pathological coffee consumption did the Swedes notice. The Swedes will have a coffee during a break at work, at home, with a friend, or whenever they open communication. The serving of coffee makes a self-evident statement in any group. Drawing on theory of materiality and presence the presentation aims to analyse coffee running through the human bodies creating chains of communication. Anything is possible with a coffee for Stieg Larsson’s characters coping with the morale of good and evil, black and white.

  • Edited by Stig Hjarvard and Mia Lövheim NORDIC PERSPECTIVES
RELIGION AND MEDIATIZATION Nordic Perspectives Nordic Perspectives This book presents new research on the changing relationship between the media, religion and culture from a Nordic perspective, while engaging with the theory of the mediatization of religion. In contemporary society, news journalism, film and television series, as well as new digital media, provide critical commentary on religion while also enabling new forms of religious imagery and interaction. Religious leaders, communities and individuals reflexively negotiate their presence within this new mediatized reality. In an increasingly globalized Nordic context, the media have also come to play an important role in the performance of both individual and social identities, and in the representation and development of social and religious conflicts. Through empirical analysis and theoretical discussions, scholars from film and media studies, the sociology of religion, and theology contribute to the NORDIC PERSPECTIVES development of the theory of the mediatization of religion as well as to the broader research field of media, religion and culture. • Investigating Nordic Noir
Investigating Nordic Noir By Sofia Alexi A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Victoria University of Wellington 2017 3 Abstract Alexi Sofia, Film Studies, Victoria University of Wellington Abstract of Master’s Thesis, Submitted 10 April 2017: “Investigating Nordic noir” Scandinavian crime films and television series have become popular in recent years. This thesis explores some of the key texts in ‘Nordic noir’ through a discussion of detectives, the environment, and visual style. The emphasis in the project is on textual analysis. The first chapter examines the figures of Wallander and Lund in Wallander and Forbrydelsen respectively. I argue that the conflicts Nordic detectives often have between work and the domestic sphere are an indication of how gender stereotypes are challenged in the Scandinavian crime genre. The second chapter considers the role of the natural and built environments in Nordic noir. Features such as forests and water play a crucial role in Forbrydelsen because of the ways in which they create uncertainty, anticipation, and suspense. The urban spaces of Bron/Broen develop a sense of anonymity that recalls the function of the city in classic film noir. Rather than developing links between Sweden and Denmark, the series suggests that the Øresund bridge that spans the two countries is ultimately a disconnecting, centrifugal force that functions as what Marc Augé would call a ‘non-place’. The final chapter considers the role of colour and light in the films Insomnia and Jar City. My analysis demonstrates that Nordic noir encompasses more than naturalism and realism.

  • 1 the Millennium Trilogy and the American Serial Killer Narrative: Investigating Protagonists of Men Who Write Women Barbara F
1 The Millennium Trilogy and the American Serial Killer Narrative: Investigating Protagonists of Men Who Write Women Barbara Fister Draft of a chapter published in Rape in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy: Contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone Crime Fiction edited by Berit Åström, Katarina Gregersdotter, and Tanya Horck (Palgrave, 2013, 34-50.) Readers in the United States were the last among residents of developed nations to discover the Millennium Trilogy. Even though the books were international bestsellers, publishers were reluctant to launch them in the American market, uncertain about their audience appeal. Sonny Mehta, legendary editor and publisher at Knopf, eventually acquired the books and gave them a significant marketing push, but later confessed he had had reservations, saying ‘I had nightmares that we would be the only country where it didn’t work’ (McGrath 2010). American readers, who embrace the short chapters and fast-paced, reality-lite storylines of James Patterson and Dan Brown, seemed an unlikely consumer market for thrillers that take their time developing a story, express leftist political views, and are translations set in a foreign country. There was precedent for Mehta’s concern; globally bestselling authors such as Ian Rankin and Henning Mankell had not found as receptive an audience in the United States as they had elsewhere. Yet the trilogy became phenomenally popular in the US, just as it had in countries around the world. Why did it succeed against the odds? When describing the appeal of the books, readers in online discussions, blog posts, and reviews repeatedly attribute its appeal to the girl of the title.
