Virtuosic, lyrical …

Composed at about the same time as the Grande Sonate pathétique op. 13, the two op. 14 sonatas are among the easiest Beethoven ever wrote and an indispensable part of piano lessons. Their lyrical, almost chamber-like textures and moderate difficulty make them an ideal introduction to the rich legacy of Beethoven’s sonatas.

In contrast, the Sonata in C major op. 53 (1803-04) marks Beethoven’s turn towards large-scale symphonic influenced piano works. Since its first publication this highly virtuosic piece, dedicated to Beethoven’s friend and patron Ferdinand, Count Waldstein, has lost none of its magnetism. To this day it remains a pianistic challenge and a musical touchstone for every performer. : Sonata in E major Jonathan Del Mar, a scholar second to none in his knowledge of Beethoven’s music, now presents these sonatas in cutting-edge op. 14 no. 1 Urtext editions based on the latest research findings and an intensive Sonata in G major study of the sources. Practical page turns and a fine engraving op. 14 no. 2 reflecting the character of the music ensure maximum enjoyment for every pianist.

A masterpiece for Wittgenstein

In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War, commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and, for Wittgenstein, the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career.

This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor, Douglas Woodfull-Harris, was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolution from Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition. Maurice Ravel: Concerto for the Left Hand A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that for Piano and Orchestra he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and BÄRENREITER URTEXT containing his corrections to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris piano reduction, and enabled the editor, amongst other things, to With a Foreword by Christine Baur correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions, including the solo piano part. Key violin concertos of the 20th century

Bohuslav Martinů wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932–33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during his lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. Only in the late 1960s was the autograph rediscovered by the Belgian musicologist Harry Halbreich. The première was given by and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1973 with Czech violinist Josef Suk as soloist.

After hearing the Boston Symphony Orchestra perform Martinů’s Symphony No. 1 in , Mischa Elman commissioned the Bohuslav Martinů: composer to write a violin concerto for him. Martinů thereupon composed his Second Violin Concerto in 1943. Mozart’s Requiem: revised piano reduction ...

Mozart’s final work, the Requiem K. 626, was left incomplete. The completion of the fragmentary score by his assistant Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who helped him with The Magic Flute, has the character of a historical source with utmost closeness to Mozart’s thoughts.

The completed Requiem score, published in the New Mozart Edition, serves as the basis for this vocal score edition which now appears in a revised form and newly engraved. Minor corrections have been made to the musical text, the vocal parts have been made easier to read and the piano accompaniment easier to play.

Wolfgang Amadeus Christoph Wolff, an authoritative Requiem connoisseur has supplied a Foreword with a clear and concise account of the work’s genesis and Mozart: its musical features. Requiem, K. 626 BA 4538-90 replaces the existing vocal score. The BA edition number BÄRENREITER URTEXT remains the same.

Continuing the publication of Haydn symphonies

Haydn's Symphony Hob. I:89 belongs to a group of symphonies composed between the ‘Paris’ symphonies (Hob. I:82-87) and their ‘’ counterparts (Hob. I: 93-104) – the last ones he wrote before his trips to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95.

The Symphony in F major is dated 1787 in the autograph score. In this work Haydn borrowed two movements from an earlier piece, possibly owing to deadline pressure. The second and fourth movements are arrangements of movements 2 and 3 from his Concerto in F major Hob. VIIh:5 for two “lire organizzate” and orchestra. The fact that he also arranged movements from his other lire concertos suggests that he regarded them as a sort of musical quarry. This at least allowed him to recycle parts of these works after his patron had probably Joseph Haydn: prohibited him from offering them commercially. Symphony in F major

This edition continues the collaboration with the Henle publishing Hob. I:89 company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies. It is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works URTEXT of Joseph Haydn. One of the major Del Mar editions in a study score

This study score is based on the score and complete performance material of Dvořák’s famous B minor Cello Concerto (BA 9045) edited by Jonathan Del Mar and published in 2011. In addition the study score contains a Foreword by Dvořák scholar Jan Smaczny.

Like every other major 19th-century cello concerto, Dvořák’s concerto resulted from a collaboration between the composer and a virtuoso musician. Several passages in Dvořák’s autograph were written by the cellist Hanus Wihan but Bärenreiter’s edition now reveals that some details in the orchestral parts are also in his writing, showing just how closely the two musicians were working together.

Antonín Dvořák: The editor Jonathan Del Mar has conscientiously examined every Concerto for Violoncello available source, including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued. His research has led to a benchmark in B minor op. 104 edition that reconstructs, for the first time since its initial publication in 1896, Dvořák’s definitive version of the solo part. It differs from BÄRENREITER URTEXT previous editions in practically every measure and hundreds of corrections have also been made to the orchestral parts. The close of the Vierne Complete Edition

Louis Vierne (1870–1937) brought symphonic French organ music to its stylistic climax.

Besides being a productive composer, he also gained a reputation as a brilliant improviser at his place of employment, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and throughout the world.

In 1928 Vierne, one of the best-known organists of his day, made one of the earliest organ recordings, playing Bach works and his own improvisations in Notre Dame.

Three improvisations released in 1929-30 were transferred to Louis Vierne: musical notation in 1954 by his pupil Maurice Duruflé. Another Complete Organ Works previously unpublished improvisation which was recently rediscovered among Vierne's posthumous papers was reconstructed and published Volume X: in musical notation in 2005 by Duruflé’s pupil Jean-Michel Louchart Improvisations and (b. 1946). These four improvisations join Vierne's transcriptions of Transcriptions works by Johann Sebastian Bach, César Franck and Sergei Rachmaninov in this volume, bringing our complete edition of his organ works to a close.
