Transgender Representation on American Narrative Television from 2004-2014
TRANSJACKING TELEVISION: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ON AMERICAN NARRATIVE TELEVISION FROM 2004-2014 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly K. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. The 2019 Festival will showcase work drawn from over 14,200 submissions, a record high. Kim Yutani, the Festival’s recently-named Director of Programming, said: “This year’s record-breaking number of submissions are phenomenally strong: we’re invigorated and inspired by the work we’ve been seeing. Our incredible -- and growing! -- programming team has refined our curation processes, ensuring that the conversations we have as we program continue to center, as always, on a Festival that represents a wide range of filmmakers and on-screen experiences. We’re also continually evolving our process to incorporate data and research findings.” Program Team Evolves: The new hires mentioned by Yutani include expanding and refining the Programming and screener teams, with an eye towards fresh perspectives and varied decision-making voices. Throughout its history, the STOP AIDS Project has been overwhelmingly successful in meeting its goal of reducing HIV transmission rates within the San Francisco Gay community through innovative outreach and education programs. The STOP AIDS Project has also served as a model for community-based HIV/AIDS education and support, both across the nation and around the world. Breast Cancer Action Annual Report 2003 Coming Together: Moving From Illness to Activism Founded by a group of women who realized the power of community, Breast Cancer Action was born from a need for a grassroots organization with a unique understanding of the political, economic, and social context of breast cancer. Today BCA’s mission is to carry the voices of people affected by breast cancer in order to inspire and compel the changes necessary to end this epidemic. Never straying far from our community-based roots, and with a keen eye toward structural change, BCA organizes people to do something besides worry about breast cancer. 2003 was an extraordinary year for our organization and our movement. We came togeth- er in entirely new ways. New bridges were built. New steps were taken. Bold moves for- ward were made. Our community grew exponentially and our critical messages—that every woman should have access to information and care, that we need true prevention of breast cancer, and that we must develop more effective and less toxic treatments—reached an ever- growing audience. Together we demanded, and ultimately effected, lasting change. Information: The Key to Activism Information is an essential precursor to action. BCA has always been committed to providing accurate, reliable, and honest information about breast cancer. We reach the public through our English- and Spanish-language newsletters, our web site, and a toll-free number. By pro- viding information, BCA both enables people to make informed decisions for themselves and supports their activism.
