Empirically-based psychotherapy for depressed patients that explicitly incorporates client’s religious beliefs and practices has been shown to predict faster resolution and may be as efficacious as antidepressant medication. There is a demand for high-quality research to evaluate the effectiveness of modified therapies that meet the needs of depressed Muslim patients, as research has shown that most of the existing interventions are methodologically weak. A Shari’ah-compliant Islamic psychotherapy intervention is a requirement in Muslim countries that practice Sunni such as in Malaysia. Method: To address these gaps in research; we adapted a Religiously Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RICBT) that intergrates Muslim patients’ faith and practices based on the Quran and Hadith. We call this intervention Islamic Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (IICBT). Results: This article describes the steps taken to identify practices, approaches and the selection of verses from the Quran and Hadith that conform to Sunni Muslim scholars. -

Cadangan Model Psikoterapi Remaja Islam Berasaskan Konsep Tazkiyah Al-Nafs Che Zarrina Sa'ari1 Sharifah Basirah Syed Muhsin2
Jurnal Usuluddin (Julai – Disember 2012) 36:49-74 Cadangan Model Psikoterapi Remaja Islam Berasaskan Konsep Tazkiyah al-Nafs Che Zarrina Sa‘ari1 Sharifah Basirah Syed Muhsin2 Abstrak Pembinaan suatu model psikoterapi Islam dilihat menjadi keperluan mutakhir ini bersama-sama meningkatnya kesedaran Islam. Kata kunci: psikoterapi Islam, tazkiyah al-nafs, maqāmāt, tawbah, ṣabr, rajā’, khawf Planning a Psychotherapy Model for Muslim Teenagers Based on the Concept of Tazkiyah al-Nafs Abstract Recently, an Islamic psychotherapy model has been attempted with the reawakening of Islamic consciousness. This article thus, proposes a model based on the Sufism concept of tazkiyah al-nafs. It is a process to purify human soul in several steps which are indicated by maqāmāt or “phases of a Sufis journey”. Employing a theory’s application approach, this article develops the idea of maqāmāt in the Sufism as a basis for an Islamic psychotherapy model. It chooses four maqāmāt, namely tawbah, ṣabr, rajā’ and khawf, to be expounded since these four concepts are seen 1 Che Zarrina Sa‘ari, PhD, adalah Profesor Madya di Jabatan Akidah dan Pemikiran Islam, Universiti Malaya. -

Aligarh INDIA 1998 fcfc % Introduction This thesis aims at the reassessment of the role of Dara Shukoh in the history of Indian philsophy. In the history of Islam in India. Dara Shukoh holds the position of two sided figure. As heir-apparent of Shah Jahan. he was a political figure. On the other hand, he was a prominent follower of Qadiri order and became a disciple of Miyan Mir and MuUa Shah. Inspired by the sayings and acts of these spiritual preceptors, prominent Sufi works and the acquaintance in his contemporary Sufis. Dara wrote hagiographical works on Sufis including his spiritual preceptors, compiled Sufistic aphorisms and wrote some tracts on Sufism. His study of Hindu scriptures and direct contact with Hindu saints and pandits led him to translate the Upanisads into Persian and write the Majrna' al-Bahrayn (MB) as a treatise on comparative study of philosophy and religion of Sufism and Hinduism. Hindu-Muslim cultural and religious interactions have not received their due share of attraction from modern scholars. -
No Longer a Horizon, but Infinity”
Suheyla Takesh INTRODUCTION: “No Longer a Horizon, but Infinity” In 1964 the Algerian weekly Révolution africaine published “Éléments pour un art nouveau” (Elements for a New Art), an essay by the painter Mohammed Khadda that contended with the role of the artist in post-independence Algeria and in the formation of a socialist state.1 In the text, Khadda argued for a function of art beyond propaganda or agitation.2 The history of painting, he wrote, had been one of successive revolutions and of a continuous liberation that eventually culminated in the emergence of abstraction, allowing painting to become an art unto itself, no longer reliant on a physical subject. In Khadda’s account, the birth of abstract art was tied to the moment Wassily Kandinsky created “the first nonrepresentational work” in 1910—most likely a reference to Untitled (Study for Composition VII, Première abstraction).3 Whether or not we attribute the beginning of abstraction to Kandinsky’s watercolor alone, discussing it prompted Khadda to make compelling observations about abstraction’s potential. “There was no longer a horizon, but infinity,” he wrote.4 Transcending the limits of represen- tation, of physical reality, and thereby the bounds of a metaphorical “horizon,” the artist would be able—in Khadda’s imagination—to tap into an infinite range of “creative” experiences and expand what art could achieve.5 The promise of nonobjective abstraction, purporting, as it does, values of multiplicity, plurality, and heterogeneity, would be to encourage a more genuine expression of individ- uality than had been hitherto possible. The place from which Khadda’s thoughts emerged is one that is shared across geographies of decolonization: a breaking away from the entrenched colonial vision and a questioning of what it means to formulate a distinct national identity.
