MUSLIM WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Azizah Yahia al-Hibri t INTRODUCTION In this age of information technology that shrank our world into a global village, it is fair to ask how this recent development has impacted Muslim women's rights across the world. Having just traveled through nine Muslim countries, ranging from Pakistan and Bangladesh to the Gulf States, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, I would answer that it is leading, slowly but surely, to reassessment and change.' Attempts to accelerate the pace of this change, however, without full understanding of its complex topology, and the deep-rooted commitment by most Muslim women to spiritual and cultural authenticity, could halt or even reverse this process at great cost to women particularly and Muslim societies as a whole. -

The hadith, sometimes called traditions, are texts which relate the sayings and doings of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. In his famous book of forty hadith, Imam Nawawi (d. 676 A.H./1277 C.E.) relates that the Messenger of God said, “Whosoever commits to memory for my ummah (religious community) forty traditions concerning religion will be resurrected by God in the company of the jurists and the learned.” In other versions, it is said that the Prophet will be “an intercessor and witness” for such a person, or that they will be allowed 4 5 to enter Paradise from any gate they wish, composed books of forty traditions on or that “they shall be recorded amongst the a wide range of themes, such as jihad ranks of the jurists and resurrected in the (struggle), comportment (adab), or the company of the martyrs”. sacred sayings (hadith qudsi, or words of Now, the scholars of hadith are in the Prophet which quote God speaking, agreement that this tradition is weak, yet but are not part of the Quran and are not many of them have composed books of wahy or revelation). -
Islamic Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy: a Shari’Ah- Compliant Intervention for Muslims with Depression

Empirically-based psychotherapy for depressed patients that explicitly incorporates client’s religious beliefs and practices has been shown to predict faster resolution and may be as efficacious as antidepressant medication. There is a demand for high-quality research to evaluate the effectiveness of modified therapies that meet the needs of depressed Muslim patients, as research has shown that most of the existing interventions are methodologically weak. A Shari’ah-compliant Islamic psychotherapy intervention is a requirement in Muslim countries that practice Sunni such as in Malaysia. Method: To address these gaps in research; we adapted a Religiously Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RICBT) that intergrates Muslim patients’ faith and practices based on the Quran and Hadith. We call this intervention Islamic Integrated Cognitive Behavior Therapy (IICBT). Results: This article describes the steps taken to identify practices, approaches and the selection of verses from the Quran and Hadith that conform to Sunni Muslim scholars. -

1 Contemporary Wahhabism Rebranded As Salafism
FIl se peut q ue quelqu ’un d ise : FIl se peut q ue quelqu ’un d ise : Contemporary Wahhabism rebranded as Salafism: the issue of interpreting the Qur’anic verses and hadith on the Attributes of God and its significance Submitted by Namira NAHOUZA to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies, April 2009. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signature) ......................................................................................... 1 ABSTRACT This research studies the theology of those Wahhabis who have now named themselves Salafis. For the purpose of the study, they are referred to as the ‘Wahhabis-self-named- Salafis’ (WSNS). The thesis starts with the observation that the WSNS are usually studied from a political perspective, much less frequently a theological one. Recent research has identified that the theological background of all the different factions of the WSNS is one and the same. This is true for the WSNS who advocate a peaceful way to achieve their goals, as well as those who do not. This thesis aims to explore some of the theological issues that unify these factions. This research demonstrates that, because the WSNS are opposed to the very concept of interpretation of the Qur’an and the hadith, especially when these texts deal with important theological issues such as the Attributes of God, they have developed a vision of Islamic history which is entirely different from the one which had traditionally been accepted by most Muslim scholars and Western academics. -

The Canonization of Ibn Mâjah: Authenticity Vs
Jonathan AC Brown * The Canonization of Ibn Mâjah: Authenticity vs. Utility in the Formation of the Sunni Ḥadîth Canon Abstract. In Sunni Islam, the canonical ‘Six Books’ of hadith derive their authority as doctrinal references from scholarly consensus on their reliability as representations of the Prophet’s Sunna. One of the Six Boooks, the Sunan of Ibn Majah, however, presents a bizarre exception. Although it has been considered part of the Six Book collection since the late eleventh century, it has been consistently and severely criticized by Sunni scholars for the large number of unreliable hadiths it contains. Explaining the canonical status of Ibn Majah’s Sunan despite these criticisms requires recognizing that the hadith canon was based not only on authenticity but also on utility. The Six Books served to delimit the countless numbers of hadith in circulation into a manageable form, and Ibn Majah’s Sunan added to this canonical body a useful number of hadiths not found in the other Six Books. Sunni scholars themselves acknowledged that, in the case of Ibn Majah’s Sunan, utility trumped authenticity in the Sunni hadith canon. Keywords: Hadith, Ibn Majah, Canon, Forgery Résumé. -
Al-Ghazali and Marriage from the Viewpoint of Sufism
AL-GHAZALI AND MARRIAGE FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF SUFISM Kaoru AOYAGI* This paper analyzes Abu f:lamid al-Ghazali (d.llll )'s Book on the Manners of Marriage (Kitab Adab al-Nika~) in his The Revival of the Religious Sciences (J~ya' 'Ulum al-D"in}, and examines the relation between the ideal married life and the practices of Sufism. In studies until now, the contents of this book have been often examined from the viewpoint of sexuality and the problem of women in Islam; however, not much attention has been paid to al-Ghazall's evaluation of marriage within Sufism in these studies. Rather, in studies of marriage, women, and sexuality in Sufism, the focus has usually been on the ideas on sexuality of Ibn al-' Arabi ( d.1240), while few studies of al-Ghazali's Sufism analyze his discussion of marriage. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to examine al-Ghazali's discussion of marriage from the viewpoint of Sufism and to clarify its originality in the history of Sufi thought, comparing it with that of Abu Talib al-Makki (d.998), a Sufi who influenced al-Ghazali considerably and discussed marriage in detail. Al-Ghazali argues that there are many advantages in living with a wife in marriage, and he demonstrates that a man can devote himself to the worship of God and lead an ideal Sufi life with the help of marriage. On the other hand, al-Makki maintains that celibacy is preferable, at least in his time. Most of his discussion is fragmentary and not as developed as al Ghazali's, though he does treat marriage more comprehensively than the Sufis before him. -
Cadangan Model Psikoterapi Remaja Islam Berasaskan Konsep Tazkiyah Al-Nafs Che Zarrina Sa'ari1 Sharifah Basirah Syed Muhsin2
Jurnal Usuluddin (Julai – Disember 2012) 36:49-74 Cadangan Model Psikoterapi Remaja Islam Berasaskan Konsep Tazkiyah al-Nafs Che Zarrina Sa‘ari1 Sharifah Basirah Syed Muhsin2 Abstrak Pembinaan suatu model psikoterapi Islam dilihat menjadi keperluan mutakhir ini bersama-sama meningkatnya kesedaran Islam. Kata kunci: psikoterapi Islam, tazkiyah al-nafs, maqāmāt, tawbah, ṣabr, rajā’, khawf Planning a Psychotherapy Model for Muslim Teenagers Based on the Concept of Tazkiyah al-Nafs Abstract Recently, an Islamic psychotherapy model has been attempted with the reawakening of Islamic consciousness. This article thus, proposes a model based on the Sufism concept of tazkiyah al-nafs. It is a process to purify human soul in several steps which are indicated by maqāmāt or “phases of a Sufis journey”. Employing a theory’s application approach, this article develops the idea of maqāmāt in the Sufism as a basis for an Islamic psychotherapy model. It chooses four maqāmāt, namely tawbah, ṣabr, rajā’ and khawf, to be expounded since these four concepts are seen 1 Che Zarrina Sa‘ari, PhD, adalah Profesor Madya di Jabatan Akidah dan Pemikiran Islam, Universiti Malaya.
