MUSLIM WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Azizah Yahia al-Hibri t INTRODUCTION In this age of information technology that shrank our world into a global village, it is fair to ask how this recent development has impacted Muslim women's rights across the world. Having just traveled through nine Muslim countries, ranging from Pakistan and Bangladesh to the Gulf States, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, I would answer that it is leading, slowly but surely, to reassessment and change.' Attempts to accelerate the pace of this change, however, without full understanding of its complex topology, and the deep-rooted commitment by most Muslim women to spiritual and cultural authenticity, could halt or even reverse this process at great cost to women particularly and Muslim societies as a whole. -

The hadith, sometimes called traditions, are texts which relate the sayings and doings of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. REPLY TO “ABU ALQAMA” AND HIS NEFARIOUS ATTACKS ON A NARRATION FROM MALIK ALAL----DARDARDARDAR Praise be to Allah that is due from all grateful believers, a fullness of praise for all his favours: a praise that is abundantly sincere and blessed. May the blessings of Allah be upon our beloved Master Muhammad, the chosen one, the Apostle of mercy and the seal of all Prophets (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all); and upon his descendants who are upright and pure: a blessing lasting to the Day of Judgment, like the blessing bestowed upon the Prophet Ibrahim (alaihis salam) and his descendants. May Allah be pleased with all of the Prophetic Companions (Ashab al-Kiram). Indeed, Allah is most worthy of praise and supreme glorification! In this reply the following narration will be analysed in refutation of a pseudo-Salafi’s claims that it is weak and contains an unknown narrator (majhûl) by the name of Malik al-Dar in its chain of transmission (isnâd). The following has been presented here (sunniforum.com) by one of the brothers in documenting the evidences used to endorse the validity of Tawassul. Imam al-Bayhaqi related with a sound (sahih) chain the following: It is related from Malik al-Dar, `Umar's treasurer, that the people suffered a drought during the successorship of `Umar, whereupon a man came to the grave of the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, ask for rain for your Community, for verily they have but perished," after which the Prophet appeared to him in a dream and told him: "Go to `Umar and give him my greeting, then tell him that they will be watered. -

(signature) ......................................................................................... 1 ABSTRACT This research studies the theology of those Wahhabis who have now named themselves Salafis. For the purpose of the study, they are referred to as the ‘Wahhabis-self-named- Salafis’ (WSNS). The thesis starts with the observation that the WSNS are usually studied from a political perspective, much less frequently a theological one. Recent research has identified that the theological background of all the different factions of the WSNS is one and the same. This is true for the WSNS who advocate a peaceful way to achieve their goals, as well as those who do not. This thesis aims to explore some of the theological issues that unify these factions. This research demonstrates that, because the WSNS are opposed to the very concept of interpretation of the Qur’an and the hadith, especially when these texts deal with important theological issues such as the Attributes of God, they have developed a vision of Islamic history which is entirely different from the one which had traditionally been accepted by most Muslim scholars and Western academics. -

A key element of kalām discourses resides in their resort to dialectical strategies and rational frameworks which are used to explicate theological doctrine and interrelated constructs. Initially, the term kalām may have been exclusively used to exemplify the technique of using dialogues to flesh out theological propositions and postulates, whereby through a sequence of questions and corresponding answers, logical contradictions were identified in an opponent’s doctrines. However, over subsequent centuries such techniques were just one aspect of the schema of kalām, which came to represent the discipline of rational theology in a much more comprehensive sense. Al-Ghazali and Marriage from the Viewpoint of Sufism
AL-GHAZALI AND MARRIAGE FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF SUFISM Kaoru AOYAGI* This paper analyzes Abu f:lamid al-Ghazali (d.llll )'s Book on the Manners of Marriage (Kitab Adab al-Nika~) in his The Revival of the Religious Sciences (J~ya' 'Ulum al-D"in}, and examines the relation between the ideal married life and the practices of Sufism. In studies until now, the contents of this book have been often examined from the viewpoint of sexuality and the problem of women in Islam; however, not much attention has been paid to al-Ghazall's evaluation of marriage within Sufism in these studies. Rather, in studies of marriage, women, and sexuality in Sufism, the focus has usually been on the ideas on sexuality of Ibn al-' Arabi ( d.1240), while few studies of al-Ghazali's Sufism analyze his discussion of marriage. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to examine al-Ghazali's discussion of marriage from the viewpoint of Sufism and to clarify its originality in the history of Sufi thought, comparing it with that of Abu Talib al-Makki (d.998), a Sufi who influenced al-Ghazali considerably and discussed marriage in detail. Al-Ghazali argues that there are many advantages in living with a wife in marriage, and he demonstrates that a man can devote himself to the worship of God and lead an ideal Sufi life with the help of marriage. On the other hand, al-Makki maintains that celibacy is preferable, at least in his time. Most of his discussion is fragmentary and not as developed as al Ghazali's, though he does treat marriage more comprehensively than the Sufis before him. -

Did the Prophet Say It or Not? The Literal, Historical, and Effective Truth of Hadîths in Early Sunnism JONATHAN A. C. BROWN UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON INTRODUCTION Clearly defining the place of prophetic hadiths in the epistemology of Sunni Islam has proven extremely difficult. On the one hand, Sunni hadith scholars and legal theorists elaborated two parallel but contrasting scales for describing their certainty that a hadith represented the authentic words or deeds of the Prophet. On the other hand, these Muslim scholars employed hadiths in a wide range of scholarly discourses and homiletics with seeming disregard for both of these epistemological rankings. The scale developed by legal theorists and adopted into Sunni Islam in the late fourth/tenth and early fifth/eleventh cen- turies has been well studied. ' But what about the epistemological scale of the formative Partisans of Hadith (ahl al-hadlth), the original "Sunni" {ahl al-sunna wa-1-jamâ'a) scholars, who preceded this adoption? What did al-Shâfi'^i (d. 204/820) or Ibn Hanbal (d. 241/855) mean when they said that a hadith was "sound" {sah'ih)?^ Did they mean that they believed that the Prophet had actually said that statement, or that he probably had, or did they only mean that it was indicative of his normative precedent? When al-Bukhari (d. 256/870) or al- Tirmidhi (d. 279/892) declared a hadith to be sound or "fair" (hasan), how did those terms reflect their opinion on the historical truth of the hadïth in question? If a sahih hadith was an authenticated report of the Prophet, how could scholars so regularly state that one hadith was "sounder" (asahh) than another?^ How do we translate the historical vision of early Muslim scholars into terms that are comprehensible in modern Western thought?'* In this article, I contend that ahl al-hadith did not view the historical reliability of hadiths through the epistemological lens of later Sunni legal theorists. -

The thesis consists of eight chapters. It begins with a brief introduction to the life of al-Juwayni and the historical background to his doctrine of the imamate. The first chapter deals with al-Juwayni's concept of the imamate and its establishment. The second chapter deals with the qualifications required for the imam. The third chapter deals with the disqualification and dismissal of the imam.
