materials lists that follow are offered for reference purposes. The first list is for the Toddler level of Montessori (16 months – 3 years). The second list is a special list for a level that may be used by some schools called Emerging. The third list is for the Early Childhood level of Montessori. The fourth list is for the Lower Elementary (6-9) level of Montessori and the final list is for the Upper Elementary (9-12) level of Montessori. Most of the lists show Montessori Materials only. They generally do not include most consumables such as crayons, paper, glue, foods, soap, etc. These consumables need to be ordered separately. They also generally do not include furniture. It is on a separate furniture list. The materials lists are organized into columns. The first column, titled Name, lists common or usual names of the material. Since names are sometimes or often different from course to course or company to company, these are an attempt at a generic name. The second column, titled Vendor, is to indicate a supplier from which the material is available. The Montessori program requires quality material. There are many Montessori suppliers, and this list references several of them. We have made it our business to review materials from many vendors and recommend superior materials. Be very careful if you vary from the recommended materials. The third column, titled Number, is the order number of the item from whichever supplier we recommended. Please check all order numbers since the companies change many of them, or we may have made a typographical error. The remaining columns are generally titled, First Year per Classroom and Second Year per Classroom. These represent the minimum quantities of those materials required for instructional purposes. In that column the entry optional means that it is entirely up to the school whether or not to acquire that item. The entry suggested is a bit stronger. It means that it is recommended to get although not essential. A numeral such as 1 or 2 means do get that number of that item. All Montessori classrooms should generally begin with all materials fully available. However, due to financial constraints, this may not be possible. For this financial reason only, I have © Michael Dorer November 2016 4 prioritized materials into those absolutely necessary in the first year, placed in the First Year per Classroom column and those materials that could be deferred until the second year, placed in the Second Year per Classroom column. Some areas, such as Early Childhood Practical Life and Sensorial, cannot be prioritized in that way; almost all materials must be present to open the class. Please note the footnotes, since there are many comments that may explain and be relevant in the process of selecting materials. When ordering materials, be sure to check the order numbers and the current prices, they often change. Be sure to order very early to guarantee delivery.
