Windows XP Profischriften 2003 by Franzis' Verlag Gmbh, Poing in Germany Windows XP Profischriften 2003 by Franzis' Verlag GmbH, Poing in Germany Key to Original Font Names by Ulrich Stiehl, Heidelberg 2004 Besides the "MegaFont XXL" CD (described by me in http://www.sanskritweb.net/forgers/megafont.pdf), which comprises almost the entire "Berthold Types" collection, there exists a similar, but smaller Fonts CD entitled "Windows XP Profischriften 2003" also containing most fonts of the "Berthold Types" collection. This Fonts CD by Franzis' Verlag GmbH contains a total of 1774 typeface cuts divided into these collections 1. Classic Fonts (all the TTF files contain the notice "Copyright by ClassicFontCorporation, USA RWE") = Typefaces of the former H. Berthold AG 2. Modern Fonts and Display Fonts ("Copyright by Christine Mauerkirchner und Rainer Grunert RWE") = Typefaces of Adobe, Agfa/Monotype, Linotype, Bitstream, Compugraphic and other foundries It seems ClassicFontCorporation, USA RWE and Christine Mauerkirchner und Rainer Grunert RWE were one and the same company in the year 1993 (1993 is contained in all TTF files of the above Fonts CD). Maybe this couple also run the former PrimaFont GmbH (see below). The Franzis' Verlag GmbH, formerly a reputable independent technical book publishing house in Munich, is today located in the village of Poing (Bavaria, Germany) and publishes the above Fonts CD containing the fonts by PrimaFonts alias ClassicFontCorporation alias Christine Mauerkirchner alias Rainer Grunert. At the website of Professor Luc Devroye (http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/legal.html), we read about PrimaFont: The (now extinct) German foundry PrimaFont. Press release by Berthold: "Chicago, Illinois (January 25, 2000) - As a result of legal action taken by Berthold Types Limited, PrimaFont International of Germany agreed to immediately cease the unauthorized sales of more than 300 Berthold typefaces from the PrimaFont CD-ROM, which also includes typefaces from other type foundries including Adobe, Agfa, Bauer Types, Bitstream, ITC, Letraset, Linotype and Monotype. PrimaFont infringed upon the trademark rights of Berthold Types by employing a "compatibility list" to identify the true names of the typefaces that PrimaFont sold using false names. "Berthold Types actively seeks to prevent the use of compatibility lists as such use has gone unchecked in the type industry," stated Melissa Hunt, Vice President & General Counsel for Berthold Types. Adding: "The use of compatibility lists causes as much damage in the type industry as any other form of font piracy." This most recent success in Berthold Types' continued aggressive anti-piracy efforts means that PrimaFont must remove the Berthold typefaces from the PrimaFont CD-ROM. In addition, PrimaFont agreed never to sell or deal in any products that contain Berthold's typefaces and to pay Berthold an undisclosed sum." Since 2004, there exists the virtual company PrimaFont Rainer Grunert, P.O. Box 151405, 80048 Munich, described by Rainer Grunert at his website http://primafont.de (= http://font.de) as follows: PrimaFont was founded in June, 1992, in Hamburg, Germany as a limited company. The original business was primarily to re-cut, re-publish, and market typographic characters no longer subject to copyright protection. The users receive high quality goods for a reasonable price. PrimaFont characters are applied up to now in high quality typesetting shops, print shops and other firms devoted to layout and similar pre-press operations. In the following years PrimaFont has come to focus more and more on the development of software for the graphics industry. This endeavor has resulted in two significant software applications for Berthold users: The PostScript Translator for linking PostScript-incompatible input equipment to PostScript-compatible output equipment, and conversion software, TypoLink, for adopting and exactly positioning formatted standing matter, including layout, to QuarkXPress™. Both products were distributed by the strongest typeface competitor the H. Berthold AG, Berlin. In the year 1997 PrimaFont closed its activities, the rights on the legal property moved over to the former owners. Now 2004, seven years later, PrimaFont is back with an online store and offers you high quality typefaces to reasonable prices. E-business with an integrated credit card billing makes it possible. PrimaFont is a registered trademark. The computer code of the fonts is under patent law in most of the countries. 1 The question is: Who holds the rights to the fonts contained in this "Windows XP Profischriften CD" ? On the cover of this CD and also in the booklet we read "(c) 2003 Franzis' Verlag Poing". Yet in the booklet, Franzis' Verlag admits that the fonts are originals ("Vorlagen") of other foundries, whose company names were erased from the TTF font files and replaced by "Franzisfont-Schriftnamen", being font names invented by PrimaFont alias ClassicFontCorporation alias Christine Mauerkirchner alias Rainer Grunert: (Page 45 of the booklet to "Windows XP Profischriften") It is interesting that "Berthold Types" claims to have won a lawsuit against PrimaFont on account of a fonts "compatibility list", while Franzis' Verlag also publishes such a compatibility list in above Fonts CD booklet. Given that "Berthold Types Limited" exists at all and given that "Berthold Types Limited" won a lawsuit against PrimaFont, why does "Berthold Types" not institute legal actions against Franzis' Verlag in Poing? And what about the two dozen other foundries listed above by Franzis' Verlag as "Vorlagen"? 2 List of all Typefaces of the Fonts CD "Windows XP Profischriften 2003" Please note that the following list is based on the PrimaFont list published at Luc Devroye's fonts website (http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/primafont.txt at the fontname site http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/fontnames.html). I checked this PrimaFont list against the files in the CD of Franzis' Verlag and made appropriate corrections. The fonts marked with an asterisk (*) in the right-most column are missing on the Fonts CD, although these fonts are mentioned in the booklet of Franzis' Verlag accompanying the Fonts CD. The family of each typeface is named by a 3-digit acronym, e.g. AET for Aetna. The style or cut is marked by R = Roman, B = Bold, etc. attached to the 3-digit typeface family acronym to which please add ".TTF" for the Windows TrueType font name. The Fonts CD only contains Truetype fonts, no PostScript fonts. The column with header "Foundry of this Font Version" denotes that this font departs (or may depart) from fonts by other foundries. Example: The font with the PrimaFont name "Bemure" is the version of "Bembo" by Berthold, whereas the font with the PrimaFont name "Bemsario" is the version of "Bembo" by Adobe. • Ed Benguiat Obituary
Ephram Edward Benguiat 1927-2020 This week we learned of the passing of the most prolific American type designer of the second half of the twentieth century. Ed Benguiat was also a pilot, a philosopher, a skilled raconteur, an engaging personality, and a world-class jazz percussionist. But his legacy will be not merely his great talent but his great adaptability to client needs. In the 1960s, with huge type libraries rare, New York City art directors would pay hundreds of dollars for a couple of words set in a specialized head- line font. If planning a long campaign, that would easily justify designing a typeface, considering also the possibility that somebody else might want to use the same face later. Most of these were not intended for a typeset- ting computer, but rather a filmstrip-driven machine, where each letter was hand-positioned by the operator for optimal fit, usually specified by the client as TNT (Tight, Not Touching). Ed designed hundreds of such faces for his employer, Photo-Lettering Inc., often without being credited for them, although if you see a face with Hand- tooled in its name it’s probably one of his. Because he was designing for art directors with many different opinions, he learned to adapt his design skills to match almost any style. This skill was highlighted shortly after it became possible to buy typesetting machines inexpensively, especially those of Compugraphic Corp. Under- standing that an opportunity existed to market typefaces to owners of these machines, Photo-Lettering created the International Typeface Corporation, ITC, to produce them.

  • Point Size Is Different from X-Height
x-Height By Allan Haley THE TERM X-HEIGHT REFERS TO THE HEIGHT OF THE LOWERCASE X in a given typeface at any given size. It provides a way of describing the general proportions of any typeface. Conversely, display typefaces are used to entice a reader into text copy, to create a mood or feeling, or to announce important information. Point Size Is Different Than x-Height The point size of a typeface is basically a measure of its overall height, from the top of the tallest character above the baseline to the longest descender beneath the baseline. However, since, over 95 percent of all Latin letters read are lowercase, with proportions that vary from typeface to typeface, their x-height is an important factor in both legibility and readability. It offers a x-heights can vary dramatically from typeface to typeface. highly practical way to classify the size of the vast majority of the characters read. a relatively generous x-height, while Small x-Heights Seemingly similar typefaces may in fact those in the Bernhard Modern family are Although a large letter size may be have very different x-height proportions. usually considered small. preferable in some scenarios, bigger is For example, the lowercase characters in not always better.
