A PARENT’S INTRODUCTION TO THE SENSORY SYSTEM Sensory Processing in Early Childhood Occupational Therapy

If you suspect your child has a Sensory Processing Disorder, we advise engagement with an intervention from an Occupational Therapist trained in Sensory Integration, because “on target” intervention is critical and “the wrong” intervention can be more harmful than helpful in dealing with Sensory Processing Disorders.

Helpful Tips for Handling Sensory Processing Concerns in Real Life • Get “Modulated”: help your child get their system regulated so they can remain on an even keel throughout the day • Daily Routines: • Have a regular daily and weekly schedule so the body can maintain optimal modulation and learn to be prepared for life events • Set a regular bedtime, even on weekends • Have a regular sleep–time routine • Maintain a regular/ consistent wake up time and morning routine • Have daily “Play-Time” activities that you know work for your child • Running • Dancing • Rough and tumble play • Pillow forts/ burrito/sandwich activities • Sensory baskets • Have daily “Down-Time” activities to help your child recalibrate • A private space like a tent • Reading / picture books in a sensory rich setting • Calming music: classical works best, but anything soothing • Try headphones if your child doesn’t have tactile concerns • Learn your child’s sensory “language” • Observe your child and learn what they are saying to you in different sensory situations

• Reduce the information your child processes daily • Limit changes to the environment as much as possible • Consistency with fragranced items or use “fragrance free” • Consistency with environmental temperature • Consistency with fabric types Sensory Processing in Early Childhood Occupational Therapy

How to get help: • Find an Occupational Therapist trained in Sensory Integration • Questions to ask: Have they taken continuing education courses and prerequisites? • Have they taken Sensory Integration Praxis Test (SIPT) course work and the SIPT? • What other work have they done in Sensory Integration in the community? • Do the experience with providing sensory diets within the community? • Can they provide direct service as well as training? • Can they outline a treatment schedule with start, goals and anticipated ending? [You want guidance, not forever ongoing OT.]
