Born in the period of Dongyi civilization, Chinese Cuju began to take shape during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period, and gradually flourished during the Qin, Han, Tang and Song dynasties. Through the economic and cultural exchange between China and the West in the past ages, Cuju was introduced into Europe when Mongol expedited westward in Yuan Dynasty. Finally, it has become the modern football, which originated from ancient Chinese Cuju and developed from European competition rules and now is widely accepted and popular in the world. 1. The Cultural Background of the Study On July 15th, 2004, Mr. Blatter, the president of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) officially announced in the 3rd session of Soccerex Fair, that football originated in Zibo, the capital of Qi State during the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China. Cuju (ancient football game) began in China, while modern football (eleven -player game) originated in England.

    Sports and Games in the Middle Ages Medieval sport was an exciting spectator event and, much like today, it drew large crowds. Most sports were enjoyed on Sundays and on feast days when folk did not have to work and were free to pursue leisure activities. Many of the popular sports played in the Middle Ages are the predecessors of modern sports. Football One early form of football, first described in a twelfth- century account of London, was a combination of football and rugby and involved carrying the ball into the goal. Another, ‘camp-ball’, was played in a large open field, sometimes several miles long, and by an unlimited number of players. Neighbouring villages might take each other on and riots could ensue. Handball, golf and hockey evolved from this game. At this time balls were made of leather and stuffed with either cloth or straw; or pig bladders filled with dried peas were used. Early forms of football have been played since medieval times. Bowling Bowling was greatly enjoyed in medieval times. There were various forms of the game. Some were like skittles whilst others were similar to boules or petanque. It is thought that marbles was a mini form of bowls developed especially for children. Other Sports Caich was a game resembling modern-day racquetball. Players would bounce a ball against a wall using a pole or bat. However, as caich required a specialized ball it was only played in urban settings by people of at least moderate economic standing. Ice skating was a popular winter pastime.

    Flag Football Rules Divisions Men’s and Women’s Leagues are offered Sub divisions may be created upon need of skill level 1. Team Requirements 1.1 A team shall consist of seven players. A team can play with a minimum of 6 players. 1.2 The offensive team must have 4 players within 1 yard of the line of scrimmage at the time of the snap. 1.3 All players must have checked in with the scorekeeper and be recorded on the game sheet before they are allowed to participate. 1.4 Substitutions are allowed between plays and during time-outs. 1.5 All games shall be played on the date and hour scheduled. BE ON TIME. 2. Equipment and Facilities 2.1 All players must wear shoes. 2.2 Rubber cleated shoes will be allowed. No metal screw-in cleats, open toe, open heel or hard soled shoes will be allowed. 2.3 Each player must wear pants or shorts without any belt(s), belt loop(s), pockets(s) or exposed drawstrings. A player may turn his/her shorts inside-out or tape his/her pockets in order to play. 2.4 All jewelry must be removed before participating. 2.5 Towels may not be worn, a towel may be kept behind the play. 2.6 Equipment such as helmets, billed hats, pads or braces worn above the waist, leg and knee braces made of hard, unyielding substances, or casts is strictly prohibited. A search down the centuries reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees, and to which the historical development of football has been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that people have enjoyed kicking a ball about for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to consider it an aberration of the more 'natural' form of playing a ball with the hands. On the contrary, apart from the need to employ the legs and feet in tough tussles for the ball, often without any laws for protection, it was recognized right at the outset that the art of controlling the ball with the feet was not easy and, as such, required no small measure of skill. The very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise from a military manual dating back to the second and third centuries BC in China. This early form of futbol Sala (futsal) was developed by Juan Carlos Ceriani to be played at YMCAs. Ceriani's game was designed for five players per team, and could be played indoors or outdoors. At around the same time, a similar form of football played on basketball courts was being developed in São Paulo, Brazil. These new forms of football were quickly adopted throughout South America. The Brazilian Confederation of Sport instituted its first official rules for futebol de salão in 1958. The international governing body FIFUSA (Federación Internacional de Fútbol de Salón, International Futsal Federation) was created in 1971 to administer the game, and held its first futsal world championship in São Paulo in 1982. Due to an apparent dispute with FIFA over the administration of fútbol, FIFUSA coined the word fut-sal in 1985, while the United States Futsal Federation coined the name "Futsal" the same year. FIFA soon began to administer its own indoor soccer games, creating its own version of the rules and hosting its first FIFA Indoor Soccer World Championship in 1989 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1992 it was the FIFA Five-a-Side World Championship (Hong Kong) and since 1996 it has been called the FIFA Futsal World Championship (Guatemala). One of the most remarkable changes was the reduction of the ball weight and increase in ball size (from a handball size to a football size 4), which enabled faster play and, for the first time, scoring goals with the head (though this is still difficult and uncommon).

In fact, even today’s most popular game, football, was played by only the richest schoolboys around the nati on. Rugby, and many other games we now know and love, were yet to be invented. Football and rugby are everywhere in modern Briti sh life and, even if we don’t parti cularly like them, it is hard to escape their collecti ve presence. So how did these sports begin? Back in the early Victorian era, many public fi gures were worried about the state of school educati on and had concerns as to the behaviour of schoolboys. Despite strict punishments, it seemed that only their weekly games lessons got the best of them. Deciding it could help them understand the vital skills needed in life, headmasters believed that more physical educati on was needed. An early form of football instantly became the most popular with school children everywhere. Each school decided on their own sets of rules and began to develop into teams and later they formed clubs. However, there was to be one major problem. When clubs began to organise fi xtures, they found the other ‘football’ teams played with diff erent rules. Some could pick up the ball, others argued on how many players should be allowed to play. The ban lasted almost 500 years. ❖ Although soccer was popular from the 8th to the 19th century, it was disorganised, violent, more spontaneous and was usually played by an indefinite number of players.     Guidelines for matches on American football fields Field Size: Understanding the field size for rugby matches is 100 meters by 70 meters, American football fields (100yds x 53 yds) are not ideal for rugby matches, but are acceptable (specially for high school and middle school rugby). When using a football field, utilize the normal markings, end-zone, out-of-bounds, etc. Below is some additional detail on using these fields. Touch 5 meter and 15 meter lines (in order of best option): • If lines exist for a wider soccer or lacrosse field, utilize those lines as touchlines. Make sure there is at least 5 meters of grass or turf from the touchline to the surrounding track or barriers. o The 5 meter line for the front of lineouts is the existing football out-of-bounds lines. o The 15 meter line for the back of lineouts is the top of the numbers for each yard line. • Utilize the football out-of-bounds lines as rugby touchlines. Ensure there is 5 meters of grass or turf between the touchline and the surrounding track or barriers. o The 5 meter line for the front of lineouts is the nearest marking you can utilize 5 meters from the sideline. This could be a hash line or potentially the referee will have to mark this out each lineout. o The 15 meter line for the back of lineouts is the top of the numbers for each yard line.
