The modern maritime history is much about big things: big ships driving the big society-changing processes of the 20th century. Industrialization moved the ma- jority of workforce from agriculture and small-scale manufacturing to large-scale industrial organizations changing the so- cial and urban structure, and globalization spread commercial networks increasingly all over the shores of the oceans. The histo- ry of the Odense Steel Shipyard (Odense Staalskibsværft) 1918-2012 is a story of big international business in a small country. Even though many of the forces shaping the company’s development were inter- national, in a small community a single company may have a considerable effect on how the global challenges and oppor- tunities are faced within the local context. The shipyard, as a rigid-to-change mate- rial and social construct, provides a histo- rical window well positioned to explore industrial transformation in between the global and local. Shipbuilding is based on complex sy- stems that take form as a result of push and pull of technological, economic, so- cial and political forces. Trying to grasp the multi-layered complexity of the busi- ness while also making sense of general trends is a common problem among shipyard histories. No estaleiro de Odense, Odense Steel Shipyard. Ourives especializado em prata e escultor autodidata, possui oficina própria localizada na sua cidade natal desde 1985. Seus ateliês incluem fundição de bronze, oficina e parque de esculturas. Jens Galschiot–é considerado como um artista muito versátil, ele se move na intersecção entre instalações artísticas e street art,com referências nítidas à social sculpture (Joseph Beuys), ao simbolismo e ao art nouveau. Seu trabalho é fundamentalmente voltado para o combate às injustiças do mundo, instalando esculturas em locais públicos e praças das maiores cidades do mundo. A maioria das esculturas são feitas de bronze, utilizando seus próprios recursos. Galschiot se tornou várias vezes conhecido mundialmente com o tema Art in Defense of Humanism–AIDOH, (arte em defesa do humanismo), devido às ações em eventos importantes. Durante a Cúpula do Clima de Copenhague em dezembro de 2009, instalou a escultura, Survival of the Fattest (a sobrevivência dos mais gordos), ao lado da Pequena Sereia. O artista também criou instalações de escultura em diversos outros lugares. Entre outras, instalou as esculturas de 22 toneladas entituladas de Min Indre Svinehund (Minha Besta Interior), em 1993 na Europa – considerada como uma forma ilegal de Street Art.
