Phylogeny, evolution and speciation of Choristoneura and Tortricidae (Lepidoptera) by Giovanny Fagua González A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Systematics and Evolution Department of Biological Sciences University of Alberta © Giovanny Fagua González, 2017 Abstract Leafrollers moths are one of the most ecologically and economically important groups of herbivorous insects. These Lepidoptera are an ideal model for exploring the drivers that modulate the processes of diversification over time. This thesis analyzes the evolution of Choristoneura Lederer, a well known genus because of its pest species, in the general context of the evolution of Tortricidae. It takes an inductive view, starting with analysis of phylogenetic, biogeographic and diversification processes in the family Tortricidae, which gives context for studying these processes in the genus Choristoneura. Tectonic dynamics and niche availability play intertwined roles in determining patterns of diversification; such drivers explain the current distribution of many clades, whereas events like the rise of angiosperms can have more specific impacts, such as on the diversification rates of herbivores. Tortricidae are a diverse group suited for testing the effects of these determinants on the diversification of herbivorous clades. To estimate ancestral areas and diversification patterns in Tortricidae, a complete tribal-level dated tree was inferred using molecular markers and calibrated using fossil constraints. The time-calibrated phylogeny estimated that Tortricidae diverged ca. 120 million years ago (Mya) and diversified ca. 97 Mya, a timeframe synchronous with the rise of angiosperms in the Early-Mid Cretaceous. Ancestral areas analysis supports a Gondwanan origin of Tortricidae in the South American plate. -

The importance of the area is furthermore underlined by the occurrence of +AE:<D:) K>?9:= and -I9B:M>:) OI:K=>9IDE;:=>:, two species protected by the Fauna-Flora-Habitat directive of the EU. An ecological analysis underlines the particular importance of the sandy dune system and halophytic depression for Lepidoptera. Bed of reeds and hygrophilous to xerophilous grassland add to the overall diversity. Recent afforestations probably will improve the importance of woody plants. Biogeographically, species which are widely distributed in Eurasia and/or North America or which are even cosmopolitan cover about 72% of the inventory. -

Species can be identified using taxonomic keys and molecular methods. The genus includes 52 species and subspecies colonising conifers and non-conifer trees in many areas in the world, among which five species are present in the EU. The non-EU species are listed in Annex IAI of Council Directive 2000/29/EC as Choristoneura spp. (non-European). Some Choristoneura species are important defoliators in North America, mainly on conifers but also on several broadleaf tree species and on non-forest crops. Females lay eggs in batches on the needles or the leaves, and overwintering occurs at the larval stage in a silken hibernaculum. Most species are univoltine, some are bivoltine and at least one subspecies has a 2-year life cycle. Pupation occurs on the twigs of conifers or in folded leaves of broadleaf trees. The adults are strong flyers, and the larvae can disperse by ballooning. -

Box 14515/775, Tehran – Iran; [email protected] Preface The Ichneumonidae is one of the most species rich families of all organisms with an estimated 60000 species in the world (Townes, 1969). Even so, many authorities regard this figure as an underestimate! (Gauld, 1991). An estimated 12100 species of Ichneumonidae occur in the Afrotropical region (Africa south of the Sahara and including Madagascar) (Townes & Townes, 1973), of which only 1927 have been described (Yu, 1998). This means that roughly 16% of the afrotropical ichneumonids are known to science! These species comprise 338 genera. The family Ichneumonidae is currently split into 37 subfamilies (including, Acaenitinae; Adelognathinae; Agriotypinae; Alomyinae; Anomaloninae; Banchinae; Brachycyrtinae; Campopleginae; Collyrinae; Cremastinae; Cryptinae; Ctenopelmatinae; 1 Diplazontinae; Eucerotinae; Ichneumoninae; Labeninae; Lycorininae; Mesochorinae; Metopiinae; Microleptinae; Neorhacodinae; Ophioninae; Orthopelmatinae; Orthocentrinae; Oxytorinae; Paxylomatinae; Phrudinae; Phygadeuontinae; Pimplinae; Rhyssinae; Stilbopinae; Tersilochinae; Tryphoninae; Xoridinae) (Yu, 1998). In 2004, the USDA intercepted live Callidiellum villosulum beetles from wood décor and craft products imported from China, and shipments of the commodity were recalled. Options to mitigate the risk of introducing quarantine arthropod pests in wood décor and craft products (non-palleting and non-crating) from China into the United States include fumigation and heat treatment described in the PPQ Treatment Manual. Monitoring the population dynamics of harmful moths using synthetic sex attractants in Leningrad Region was carried out in the fruit experimental orchard of St. Petersburg Agrarian University (Pushkin) and small private orchards of Pushkin district. As a result of the analysis of many years temperature characteristics of vegetation seasons in the Leningrad Region and calculation of the sums of effective temperatures, it has been found that the codling moth had high numbers and developed in two full generations in 1999, 2002, 2006, 2013 and 2018. The complex of phytophagous leaf rollers as a whole can cause sometimes significant harm to both industrial orchards and homestead lands, because the economic threshold of harmfulness by yield losses is often achieved, when plants are damaged by more than one pest species, each of which causing only weak harm. As a general conclusion, the complex of orchard leaf rollers is a dynamic system. Their development and numbers ratio is influenced by weather conditions of a year and climate changes in general. 1 Introduction Pheromone monitoring is the most important element of the modern integrated system of fruit crop protection from the complex of moths in different natural and climatic conditions [1, 2]. Our research was carried out in the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation, where apple is a key fruit culture.
