ABSTRACT This article explores how Gilles Deleuze’s conceptualization of the flashback, as ‘recollection-image’, can assist our understanding of the rendering spectacular of physical memory in contemporary Chinese martial arts movies. The focus is a prominent flashback in the climactic duel in the kung fu movie, Yip Man/Ip Man (Yip, 2008). This recollection-image demonstrates how trained bodies in Chinese martial art movies suggest a slightly different understanding of time and affect from that which Deleuze formulated, based on his observation of US and European films. On textual, cultural and historical levels this article explores the usefulness of martial arts movies for developing our understanding of physicality in cinema, and for reconsidering Deleuze’s ideas in light of the Eurocentrism of some of his conclusions.

    book reviews 223 Benjamin N. Judkins and Jon Nielson The Creation of Wing Chun: A Social History of the Southern Chinese Martial Arts. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 2015. pp. 364. $26.95. ISBN 978-1438456942. This outstanding book is the first scholarly examination of the history of a modern Chinese martial art in a Western language. While many of the modern Japanese martial arts have been documented and described, no similar work exists for the myriad of modern Chinese martial arts. Perhaps more impor- tantly, The Creation of Wing Chun is a social history that places the formation and development of the internationally known martial art of Wing Chun in a time and place. Judkins and Nielson have managed to produce a history that is an enjoyable read built on a sound historical foundation. It is a story that says as much about twentieth and early twenty-first century China as about a particular school of fighting. At its root is the history of the development of a Guangdong and Hong Kong identity in the form of a particular martial arts style. That identity formed in contrast to a monolithic Chinese nationality. Wing Chun was distinct and so was the region and culture that produced it. The book also places the history of Wing Chun at the center of a broader story about the place of martial arts in late imperial and twentieth century Chinese society. As the wider, modern, Western world intruded into southern Chinese society, the role of “hand combat” in that environment was called into question.

    IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 4 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Historicizing Martial Arts Cinema in Postcolonial Hong Kong: The Ip Man Narratives Jing Yang, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China Abstract: The surge of Hong Kong martial arts films in the new millennium transformed the classic genre with a keen consciousness of history. Based loosely on the life experiences of the Cantonese master Ip Man (1893–1972), Ip Man (Yip, 2008) and The Grandmaster (Wong, 2013) utilize the genre to examine the dynamics between Hong Kong and mainland China by integrating the personal with the national. Against the shifting industrial and cultural orientations of Hong Kong cinema and society, the paper argues that the multifarious discourses in both films exemplify the effort to construct a post-colonial identity in negotiation with mainland China. In a string of Ip Man films released from 2008 to 2015 (Ip Man [Yip, 2010, 2015], The Legend is Born: Ip Man [Yau, 2010], Ip Man: The Final Fight [Yau, 2013] and a 50- episode TV drama Ip Man [Fan, 2013]), Wilson Yip’s Ip Man (2008) and Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster (2013) recount the life experiences of the Cantonese master whose legacy is the global popularity of Wing Chun art.
