Buddhist Association of China Zhōngguó Fójiào Xiéhuì 中国佛教协会 The currently Beijing- based Buddhist Asso- ciation of China (BAC) was founded in Shang- hai in 1927 by lay Buddhists who were inspired by reformist monks such as Taixu to defend their collective interests. The organization fell apart during the civil war and its factions split under Communist rule, but resumed ac- tivities in 1976 under the leadership of Zhao Puchu. ntil recently only two organizations claimed to represent all Buddhists in China: the Buddhist Association of China ([BAC] zhongguo fojiao xie- hui), based in Beijing, and the Buddhist Association of the Republic of China ([BAROC] zhongguo fojiaohui), based in Taipei, Taiwan. This situation differs from that in imperial China, when Buddhists were not affiliated with a unique institution. In the absence of a supreme author- ity Buddhists have been spared internecine (occurring within a group) conflicts over doctrine, but on the other hand they have been vulnerable to attempts by the state to control or even suppress their activities. Although the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) was the later emperors were too weak to react when modern- supportive of the Tibetan Buddhism practiced by Mon- izers converted temples into schools. -

Overview The China Research and Policy Group at Western is a research and policy analysis/ dialogue entity based at the Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI), Department of Economics, The University of Western Ontario (UWO), London, Ontario, Canada, and partnered with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It also has several partnering research groups in universities and research institutions in China, and other countries including the UK, Russia and India. It engages in both project supported activities and in policy commentary and dialogue on a wide range of issues related to economic policy issues involving China. It also interacts with the business community both inside and outside of China. Its central focus is on China’s ongoing integration and involvement in the global economy. This covers China’s trade and foreign investment inflows and outflows, its involvement in international bodies (G20, WTO, IMF, World Bank), exchange rate and reserve management policies, growing Southern engagement, and regional trade and monetary policies. But in addition, the group also covers Chinese domestic issues including enterprise reforms, Chinese tax policy, China’s labour markets, China’s regional polices, social policy and inequality and other issues. -

11 Koan and Kensho in the Rinzai Zen Curriculum G. VICTOR SOGEN HORI LCCORDING to a widely accepted model, a koan i s a clever psycho- logical device designed to induce satori or kensho. The koan is said to pose to the Ze n practitione r a parado x unsolvabl e by the rational , intellectualizing mind. Drive n int o a n eve r more desperat e corne r b y his repeate d futil e at - tempts to solve what cannot be rationally solved, the practitioner finally breaks through the barrier of rational intellection to the realm of preconceptual an d prelinguistic consciousnes s variousl y calle d pur e consciousness , no-mind , without-thinking, or emptiness. Thi s breakthrough i s called satori or kensho. The cleverness of the koan consists in the fact that rather than attacking reason and logi c fro m outside, th e koa n use s reaso n t o driv e itsel f int o a self - contradiction and cause its own destruction. In this picture, the koan is funda- mentally an instrument and has no use except as a means for psychologically inducing kensho. These two notions—the koan as nonrational, psychological instrument, an d kensho a s th e breakthroug h t o nonrational , noncognitive , pure consciousness—nicely support each other.1 However, thes e conceptions o f koan an d kensho were criticized long ago . Dogen, i n th e "Sansuiky5 " ("Mountains an d Water s Sutra") fascicle of the Shobogenzo, writes: In grea t Sun g Chin a toda y there ar e a grou p o f scatterbrained people , whose number i s so large that the y cannot possibly be scare d of f by the faithfu l few. -

ABSTRACT Conversion by the Book: Buddhist Print Culture in Early Republican China 經典佛化: 民國初期佛教出版文化 Gregory Adam Scott 史瑞戈 In this dissertation I argue that print culture acted as a catalyst for change among Buddhists in modern China. Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. In doing so I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions of the ‘revival’ of Chinese Buddhism in the modern period, and demonstrate that publishing, propelled by new print technologies and new forms of social organization, was a key field of interaction and communication for religious actors during this era, one that helped make possible the introduction and adoption of new forms of religious thought and practice. 本論文的論點是出版文化在近代中國佛教人物之中,扮演了變化觸媒的角色. 通過研究從十 九世紀末到二十世紀二十年代的主要的出版機構, 種類, 及其主辦人物與提供貢獻者, 論文 說明佛教印刷的多元化 以及範圍的大量擴展, 再加上跟出版有關的社會結構, 對中國佛教 人物的活動都發生了顯著的影響. 此研究顯示在被新印刷技術與新形式的社會結構的推進 下的出版事業, 為該時代的宗教人物展開一種新的相互連結與構通的場域, 因而使新的宗教 思想與實踐的引入成為可能. 此論文試圖對現行關於近代中國佛教的所謂'復興'的討論提出 貢獻. The demise of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is only a matter of time. Nevertheless, before its complete collapse, the CCP is trying to tie its fate to the Chinese nation, with its 5000 years of civilization. This is a disaster for the Chinese people. The Chinese people must now face the impending questions of how to view the CCP, how to evolve China into a society without the CCP, and how to pass The Epoch Times is now publishing a special editori al series, on the Chinese heritage. The Epoch Times is “Nine Commentaries on the Chinese Communist Party.” now publishing a special editorial series, “Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party.” Before the lid is laid on the coffin of the CCP, we wish to pass a final judgment on it and on the international communist movement, which has been a scourge to humanity for over a century. Throughout its 80-plus years, everything the CCP has touched has been marred with lies, wars, famine, tyranny, massacre and terror. Traditional faiths and principles have been violently destroyed. Original ethical concepts and social structures have been disintegrated by force. Empathy, love and harmony among people have been twisted into struggle and hatred. Veneration and appreciation of the heaven and earth have been replaced by an arrogant desire to “fight with heaven and earth.” The result has been a total collapse of social, moral and ecological systems, and a profound crisis for the Chinese people, and indeed for humanity. -

Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Hsuan-Li Wang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Taking Gushan 鼓山 Monastery in Fujian Province as a reference point, this dissertation investigates the formation of the Gushan Chan lineage in Fujian area and its later diffusion process to Taiwan. From the perspective of religion diffusion studies, this dissertation investigates the three stages of this process: 1. the displacement of Caodong 曹洞 Chan center to Fujian in the seventeenth century; 2. Chinese migration bringing Buddhism to Taiwan in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and 3. the expansion diffusion activities of the institutions and masters affiliated with this lineage in Taiwan during the Japanese rule (1895-1945), and the new developments of humanistic Buddhism (renjian fojiao 人間佛教) after 1949. In this spreading process of the Gushan Chan lineage, Taiwanese Buddhism has emerged as the bridge between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism because of its unique historical experiences. It is in the expansion diffusion activities of the Gushan Chan lineage in Taiwan that Taiwanese Buddhism has gradually attained autonomy during the Japanese rule, leading to post-war new developments in contemporary humanistic Buddhism.
