(I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants. However, scientific evidence for the biological effects of Garcinia atroviridis (GA) is lacking. We investigated the phytochemical composition, safety profiles, and antioxidant and antiobesity effects of methanolic extracts of Garcinia atroviridis (MeGa) in obese female rats. Repeated dose toxicity studies were conducted according to the OECD guidelines. Upon sacrifice, haematological, biochemical, lipid profile, and serum-based metabolomics analyses were performed to evaluate metabolic expression changes and their related pathways. MeGa contains several phytochemical groups and GA fruit acids. MeGa was found to be nontoxic in both male and female rats with an oral lethal dose (LD50) of 2000 mg/kg. After 9 weeks of treatment, MeGa-treated obese rats had lower weight gain and better lipid profiles (cholesterol and triglyceride), which correlated with the altered metabolic pathways involved in the metabolism of lipid (glycerophospholipid) and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acid. -

Phylogeny and Systematics of the Rauvolfioideae

Endress2 (APOCYNACEAE) BASED ON MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE1 ABSTRACT To elucidate deeper relationships within Rauvolfioideae (Apocynaceae), a phylogenetic analysis was conducted using sequences from five DNA regions of the chloroplast genome (matK, rbcL, rpl16 intron, rps16 intron, and 39 trnK intron), as well as morphology. Bayesian and parsimony analyses were performed on sequences from 50 taxa of Rauvolfioideae and 16 taxa from Apocynoideae. Neither subfamily is monophyletic, Rauvolfioideae because it is a grade and Apocynoideae because the subfamilies Periplocoideae, Secamonoideae, and Asclepiadoideae nest within it. In addition, three of the nine currently recognized tribes of Rauvolfioideae (Alstonieae, Melodineae, and Vinceae) are polyphyletic. We discuss morphological characters and identify pervasive homoplasy, particularly among fruit and seed characters previously used to delimit tribes in Rauvolfioideae, as the major source of incongruence between traditional classifications and our phylogenetic results. Based on our phylogeny, simple style-heads, syncarpous ovaries, indehiscent fruits, and winged seeds have evolved in parallel numerous times. A revised classification is offered for the subfamily, its tribes, and inclusive genera. Characters were drawn from the trnL and trnK intron and spacer regions, as well as the matK coding sequence. Parsimony analysis of the data resulted in 21,240 most parsimonious trees. None of the tribes of Bentham (1875) are monophyletic on the strict consensus tree. Parkieae are polyphyletic, with Parkia more closely related to various Ingeae and Mimoseae than to Pentaclethra. Tribe Mimoseae forms a paraphyletic grade in which are embedded both Acacieae and Ingeae. The genus Acacia s.l. is not monophyletic. Acacia subg. Acacia (Acacia s.s) is strongly supported as monophyletic, and is not closely related either to other species of Acacia s.l. or the Ingeae. Review Article A review on ethnomedicinal, phytochemical, and pharmacological significance of Terminalia sericea Burch. Ex DC. Anuja A. Nair, Nishat Anjum, Y. C. Tripathi* ABSTRACT Terminalia sericea is an eminent medicinal plant endemic to Africa distributed across the Northern, Northwest, and Southern parts of the continent. As a multipurpose species, uses of T. sericea range from land improvements to medicine. The plant has been ascribed for its varied medicinal applications and holds a rich history in African traditional medicine. This article aims to provide an updated and comprehensive review on the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical, and pharmacological aspects of T. sericea. A thorough bibliographic investigation was carried out by analyzing worldwide accepted scientific database (PubMed, SciFinder, Scopus, Google, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) and accessible literature including thesis, books, and journals. The present review covers the literature available up to 2017. A critical review of the literature showed that T. sericea has been phytochemically investigated for its chemical constituents, and a diverse group of phytochemicals, namely, pentacyclic triterpenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, steroids, and alkaloids has been reported from different parts of the plant. Pharmacological studies of the plants revealed a wide variety of pharmacological properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-neurodegenerative, anticancer, antioxidant, and other biological activities. Based on the investigative report, it is concluded that T. sericea can a promising candidate in pharmaceutical biology for the development of new drugs and future clinical uses. Its usefulness as a medicinal plant with current widespread traditional use warrants further research, clinical trials, and product development to fully exploit its medicinal value. -
