The damage was characterized by a hole in the trunk, from where the shot-hole-borer enters constructing tunnels and feeding on the wood. This is the fi rst record of A. terebrans attacking neem trees in Brazil. KEY WORDS: Insecta, shot-hole-borer, Azadirachta indica, Meliaceae, forest entomology RESUMO - Este trabalho registra e descreve o ataque de adultos de Apate terebrans (Pallas) a um plantio de nim, localizado em Guarani, MG, em março de 2007. O dano é caracterizado por um furo no tronco, por onde a broca entra, construindo túneis para se alimentar. Este é o primeiro registro de A. terebrans atacando árvores de nim no Brasil. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Insecta, broca-do-tronco, Azadirachta indica, Meliaceae, entomologia fl orestal O nim, Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae), nativo da Índia, e transformam-se em pupas em árvores mortas ou doentes, possui valor comercial devido principalmente à presença de diferentes daquelas utilizadas pelos adultos que se alimentam princípios ativos em suas sementes, folhas, frutos e raízes, os de madeira viva em troncos e galhos de árvores jovens e quais são usados na medicina e como agrotóxicos naturais sadias (Browne 1968). -

Revista Agricultura Andina, Vol. 5, 39-57, 1990 INSECTOS DEL MANZANO EN VENEZUELA Armando Brlceño· RESUMEN Se presenta una lista de los insectos del manzano, encontrados en Venezuela y países vecinos. Se hace una breve descripción de los insectos más comunes en el cultivo, tipo de daño y posible control. Los insectos más importantes son los áfidos: Aphis citrícola Van der Goot, transmisor de virosis; el coquito cogollero del manzano: Brachypnoea exilis grita Bechyne principal defoliador de los cogollos y una especie, aún no identificada que barrena los troncos y ramas de esta rosácea, considerado plaga potencial de este cultivo. ABSTRACT A check list of insects found on apple trees from Venezuela and its neighbouring Countries is given with a brief description of the most common insects found, type of damage and possible control methods. The most important insect pests are: Aphis citrícola Van der Goot, vector of virus diseases; the apple leaf beetle Brachypnoea exilis grita Bechyne, the principal defoliator ofthe bud tips; and one species, not identifid that bores both tnink and branches of this Rosaceae being considered a potential pest of apple trees. The deceased leaves a wife, a little daughter, and an aged mother to mourn his loss. The following papers were accepted for publication: NOTES ON THE FAMILY DALCERID^E. [Lepidoptera; Dalceridce.] BY HARRISON G. DYAR. I first gave a synopsis of the genera of this interesting little in 1898 N. Y. Soc. family (Journ. Ent. , vi, 231), recognizing five genera. Later, Mr. Schaus published a table (Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus. in which ten are dis- , xxix, 331, 1906), genera tinguished. Not much has been added to our knowledge since that date, but I think an improvement can be effected by a change in the order of the characters used in the table, with the suppression of one genus. Two other genera are here recognized, bringing the number up to eleven. The family is allied to the Cochlidiidse. I have never seen a larva of any species of the group, and know of but two descriptions. -

General Herbivore Outbreak Following an El Nino-Related Drought in a Lowland Panamanian Forest

Josepin Wriglit Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Box 2072, Balboa, Republic of Panama (Accepted 10 February 2004) Abstract: A severe outbreak of Lepidoptera followed the 1997-98 El Niño Southern Oscillation event, during which the climate in central Panama was unusually dry. The outbreak involved the larvae of at least 12 species of Lepidoptera and occurred at a seasonally dry, deciduous forest site, where extensive background data were available regarding climate, tree species and non-outbreak herbivory levels. Most Lepidoptera were associated with only one or two larval host plant species belonging to the same family, and the majority were monophagous during this study. During the outbreak, caterpillar densities for the major outbreak species averaged 1.6 larvae per young leaf and 0.18 larvae per leaf for leaves of all ages. For canopy trees and lianas, the mean level of leaf damage was 13.8%, ranging from 1-100%. Seven out of 20 tree species sustained most of the damage, with 21-3 7% of the leaf area consumed. Relative to non-outbreak years, damage levels increased by more than 250% during the outbreak. Single-species outbreaks were observed in other areas with a similar drought, but wetter forests in central Panama did not experience outbreaks during this period. Historically, fewer outbreaks have been reported from tropical forests than in temperate forests, however, similar El Nino-related outbreaks have occurred recently in several other locations throughout the tropics. -

Introduction The distribution of the monotypic genus Eudinopus is limited to the southern part of the Neotropics and was previously evidenced by voucher specimens only from Argentina and Bolivia (Vidaurre et al. 2009). The occurrence in Argentina is known from the provinces of Catamarca, La Pampa, San Juan, San Luis, La Rioja, Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, Salta and Córdoba (Martínez 1959 and 1989; Halffter & Martínez 1966; Monteresino et al. 1996; Smith 2007). Keller** Abstract: Based on herbarium material, the presence in Argentina of Securidaca rivinifolia (Polygalaceae) is documented here. This is the first record of the genus for the Northeast of the country. The species is illustrated by photographs of the plant and floral details. Resumen: Sobre la base de material de herbario recolectado en el Parque Nacional Iguazú, Misiones, se documenta la presencia en la Argentina de Securidaca rivinifolia (Polygalaceae). Es el primer registro del género para el nordeste del país. Se ilustra la especie mediante fotos de la planta y detalles florales. Zusammenfassung: Basierend auf Herbariumsmaterial wird das Vorkommen von Securidaca rivinifolia (Polygalaceae) in Argentinien nachgewiesen. Die Art wird dokumentiert mittels Photographien der Pflanze im Habitat und Einzelheiten der Blüte. Key words: Argentina, Iguazú, vine, new record, Polygalaceae. El género Securidaca L. (Polygalaceae) cuenta con cerca de 80 especies distribuidas en el Neotrópico (Marques, 1996). En la Argentina hasta el presente se ha citado una sola especie del género, Securidaca ovalifolia A. St.-Hil. (Grisebach, 1879), aunque dicho registro carece de ejemplares de herbario que certifiquen la presencia de la especie (Zuloaga & Morrone, 1999). Recientes campañas de recolección en el Parque Nacional Iguazú han permitido hallar ejemplares de S. rivinifolia A. St.-Hil. & Moq. var. rivinifolia creciendo en estado silvestre. La especie se distribuye en Brasil, Perú y Bolivia. -

However, its production is threatened by several biotic factors, especially insects. In Benin, very few studies have focused on insects and just listed species commonly found on cashew worldwide. The present investigation fills this gap by presenting an exhaustive inventory of insect species associated Downloaded from with this crop in the country. The survey was carried out from September 2009 to August 2010 in 22 cashew orchards (5 young and 17 ma- ture) distributed over three major agroecological zones where cashew is most produced in the country. Insects were collected using chem- ical knock-down technique and visual observation followed by capture with sweep net. In addition, infested plant organs were sampled and incubated to collect emerging insects. In total, 262 insect species were recorded and identified. Among them, the wood borer Apate terebrans Pallas, the leafminer Eteoryctis gemoniella Stainton, and the mirid bugs Helopeltis schoutedeni Reuter., and Helopeltis anacardii Miller., appeared as the most important insect species attacking cashew in Benin. -
