Learning From Ambiguously Labeled Images Abstract In many image and video collections, we have access only to partially labeled data. For example, personal photo collections often contain several faces per image and a caption that only specifies who is in the picture, but not which name matches which face. Similarly, movie screenplays can tell us who is in the scene, but not when and where they are on the screen. We formulate the learning problem in this setting as partially-supervised multiclass classification where each instance is labeled ambiguously with more than one label. We show theoretically that effective learning is possible under reasonable assumptions even when all the data is weakly labeled. Motivated by the analysis, we propose a general convex learning formulation based on minimization of a surrogate loss appropriate for the ambiguous label setting. We apply our framework to identifying faces culled from web news sources and to naming characters in TV series and movies.

    PREVIOUSLY ON The Constant, the Variable, and the Bad Wolf in Lost and Doctor Who Kristine Larsen Today’s science fiction television audience comprehends the basic science behind time travel and parallel universes thanks to the popular writings (and television documentaries) of scientists such as Stephen Hawking, Brian Greene, and Michio Kaku. In response, the writers of such series as Doctor Who and Lost use this science in a fairly consistent way, keeping their time travel as “realistic” as possible while at the same time entertaining their loyal yet discriminating audiences. The two series certainly differ in what defines consistency in time travel, and what liberties may be taken with these rules within the canon of the series. However, each series has a human wildcard, a character who appears to bend or supersede the rules: Rose Tyler (companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors) and Desmond David Hume (named for the 18th century philosopher) respectively. While these variables are able to move between timelines and even parallel universes with an ease inaccessible to fellow characters, they must rely upon constants (in the form of other characters, items, and actions) in order to remain grounded within the dizzying world of time travel. This essay will explore the intersections between science and science fiction in the respective travels of Desmond, Rose, and their accompanying characters, focusing on the skillful navigation of the series writers and viewers through the various paradoxes scientists warn are inherent in any attempt to change the past within the confines of a single universe. The basis for our current scientific understanding of time travel is the work of Albert Einstein, whose 1915 General Theory of Relativity demonstrated that what we experience as the force of gravity is actually the warping of four-dimensional space-time by mass and energy.

    DOMINIC MONAGHAN Professional Actor, Executive Producer, Wildlife Enthusiast Series: “Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan” Hometown: Manchester, England Dominic Monaghan has demonstrated incredible versatility in his acting career with roles including Meriadoc ‘Merry’ Brandybuck in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Charlie Pace in ABC’s “Lost,” Dr. Simon Campos in ABC’s “FlashForward” and Bolt in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” In 2011, Monaghan produced and starred in “The Day,” where he played the leader of a post-apocalyptic group being hunted by zombies. Other recent credits include: “The Hundred Code,” a drama series created by Bobby Moresco, where Monaghan stars opposite Michael Nvqvist; “Goodnight Burbank,” which was the first half-hour scripted comedy made for the web; Microsoft Studios’ digital live-action series “Quantum Break” and Crackle’s web series, “The Unknown.” Monaghan is currently in production for the indie horror thriller, “Pet.” Written by Jeremy Slater, the story centers on an introverted man who imprisons a woman, only to find the tables turned on him.     1987 (20th) Hilly Hundred Fact Sheet In 1968 a photographer named Hartley Alley, along with Bernard Clayton and Tom Prebys of the Southern Indiana Bicycle Touring Association (SIBTA), decided that they ought to hold an invitational bicycle tour in the hills around Bloomington, Indiana. On June 15, 1968 the HILLY HUNDRED was born. Hartley told the manager of the Poplars Hotel that even though they expected only 50 plus riders for the two day event that year, there would come a day when the 500 person occupancy Poplars would be filled. The manager told Hartley that he need not exaggerate to get the rooms. That tour 20 years ago was a big success with 54 riders. Participants seemed to "enjoy" the challenge of the hills around Bloomington and Nashville. So from this small beginning the HILLY HUNDRED was born. Few people would have guessed that the ride would evolve into one of the premier bicycle tours attracting 5,000 participants from over 25 states by its 20th anniversary in 1987. In 1987 the number of participants was limited to 5,000 because of various capacity limitations. It is estimated that over 1,000 riders will not be able to register. Bill Pittman seemed to sense that this was the beginning of something as he wrote the following in the Indianapolis News on June 17, 1968: "About 68 midwestern cyclists are kneading sore backs and legs with liniment today after the first HILLY HUNDRED. It looked like nothing less than the Tour de France as the cyclists left the Poplars Motor Hotel.
