STRAIPSNIAI KUR BUVO LIETUVOS ЮEMЛ? Tomas Baranauskas Kur buvo Lietuvos þemë? STRAIPSNIAI KUR BUVO LIETUVOS ÞEMË? Tomas Baranauskas Lietuvos istorijos institutas, Kraþiø g. 5, LT-2001 Vilnius ÁVADAS XIII a. XIII a. ðaltiniuose fiksuojami asmenvardþiai atspindi tarmines ypatybes, kurios gali padë- ti lokalizuoti þmones, per kuriuos ðie vardai pateko á metraðèius. Ðio straipsnio tikslas panaudojant naujus ðaltinius perþiûrëti Lietuvos þemës siauràja prasme lokalizacijos problemà. HENRYKO ÙOWMIAÑSKIO LIETUVOS ÞEMËS LOKALIZACIJA IR JOS KRITIKA Sunku suskaièiuoti, kiek kartø Lietuvos þemë siauràja prasme paminëta raðyti- niuose ðaltiniuose, nes ne visada galima atskirti, kur apie Lietuvos þemæ kalbama siauràja, o kur plaèiàja prasme. H. Ùowmiañskis atkreipë dëmesá á du akivaiz- dþiausius Lietuvos þemës siauràja prasme paminëjimus: ISSN 0235716X. Lituanistica. 2002. Nr. 2(50) 3 Tomas Baranauskas 1. Be abejo, tokia keista argumentacija negali sustiprinti H. Ùowmiañskio hipotezës. H. Ùowmiañskis neatsiþvelgë á ankstyvesniø (XIXII a.) Lietuvos administracinis padalijimas XIV a. pabaigoje (valsèiø ribos iðvestos panaudojus retrospektyvinius duomenis pagal J. Jaku- bowskio, Z. Wojtkowiako, M. Spiridonovo XVI a. administracinio padalijimo tyrinëjimus): 1 kunigaikðtysèiø centrai, 2 valsèiø centrai, 3 vietovës, XIV a. ðaltiniuose priskiriamos Rusiai, 4 þemiø (kunigaikðtysèiø) ribos, 5 valsèiø ribos Kur buvo Lietuvos þemë? Pirminæ Lietuvos sienà su Rusia bandë nustatyti daugelis tyrinëtojø, bet iki ðiol ji vis dar nëra pakankamai aiðki. Paskutiniø studijø autoriai Jerzy Ochmañskis ir Petras Gauèas rëmësi gerokai vëlesniais duomenimis, ypaè vietovardþiais, todël á jø rekonstruojamà etniná lietuviø plotà pateko didesnës teritorijos21. Ðie tyrinë- tojai nepakankamai ávertino XIVXVI a.

  • The History of Vilnius Old Jewish Cemetery at Šnipiškės in the Period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Elmantas Meilus
LiTHuAniAn HiSToRiCAL STuDiES 12 2007 iSSn 1392-2343 pp. 63–92 the history of viLnius oLD JeWish cemetery at ŠnipiŠkės in the perioD of the granD Duchy of Lithuania Elmantas Meilus ABSTRACT The recent international outcry concerning an old Jewish cemetery once again being destroyed in a former suburb of Vilnius, namely Šnipiškės (nowadays in the very centre of the city), forces us to revise the history of its origin and development in the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Summarizing the history of the cemetery, one plausible conclusion is that the cemetery was established on state-owned land in the jurisdiction of the Castle possibly in the late fifteenth century and the first reliable historical data goes back to the late sixteenth century in relation to tax exemptions. A comparison of historical, cartographic and archaeological data permits to make a valid assumption that the oldest burials from the second half of the sixteenth century were located in the south-western and central section of the cemetery based on the layout of 1808 (in the area between the Sports Hall and swimming pool built in the Soviet period). The cemetery developed gradually by acquiring separate state land plots belonging to the Castle Authority (Horodnictwo) and Forestry Authority (Derewnictwo) which were rented by different persons and by taking over payment of the taxes and fees they used to pay. The general situation of the cemetery at that period was marked in the plan from the Fürstenhof collection, drafted in approximately 1730. The Jewish cemetery was combined into one mas out of separate plots around 1790 in listing the urban possessions (land plots).

In general, the forms and colors of the interior deco- ration hint at Neo-Classicist aesthetics, while the palmetto may be inspired by Lithuanian folk motifs. After WWII the former beit midrash was used as a storage, and a wooden lavatory was added to its southwestern façade (Fig. 8). Since the 1980s the building has been abandoned. Recently a plaque was put on the building, reading “Synagogue of Žiežmariai / This synagogue has been selected as a part of the / European Route of Jewish Heritage. // This Route, officially recognized by the Coun- cil of Europe as a European Cultural Route, encompasses Jewish 20.
