4 5 ANYKŠČIAI is the town situated in the North-Eastern part of Lithuania, 33 km away from Utena, in the Anykščiai mountain-ridge (95–112 meters abover the sea level).

In 1792 the town received an official blazon. History
Archeological findings show first citizens of Anykščiai district since 9000 B.C. The town‘s name was first mentioned as Anykščiai Manor of Lithuania‘s Duke Kazimieras. He wrote in his letters that he is assigning the manor for Radvila Astikaitis. During 1442–1452, first wooden church was built in town. In the XV century, the town Anykščiai is being mentioned. In 1507 the lands of the parson were adjusted. In 1516 the town got the rights of the town and the Manor of Anykščiai with the town to be given to Mikalojus Radvila.
In 1566 the town suffered several fires. The church was burnt to the ground, but it was soon to be re-built. In 1671 the church of Anykščiai was burnt down again (re-built in 1677). In the begin- ning of XVIII century, the bridge was demolished due to the wars with swedish. It was re-built in the end of XVIII century. In 1792, king Stanislovas Augustas gave the town rights and a blazon. The blazon consists out of the new bridge which was built right before receiving an autonomy, and the statue of st. Jonas Nepomukas, the watchman of the bridges.

Legal protec- tion has been granted for this synagogue in the small town of Kurkliai because of its architectural value. This is one of the most original wooden synagogues in Lithuania and the only synagogue that is sig- nificant on the regional level. The synagogue was designed by Povilas Jurėnas, construction technician, and built in 1936; the synagogue is made of dovetail logs.

In the cellar of the library there is „The laboratory of ideas“ – a space for self-realization for not only youngsters, but for everyone in general. Anykščių Vynas, founded in the year 1926, is one of oldest enterprises in the southern region of the Baltics to start produc- ing wine by industrial methods.Its founder – agronomist Balys Karazija – founded a small fruit and berry winery in the cellar of a rented house and started to ferment the first lot of apple wine.In the year 1940, after the owner of the enterprise moved to Germany, the enterprise was nationalized by the state. The specialists who remained in the country preserved and cherished the accumulated knowledge and experience of wine production.In the seventies, after a reconstruction that had taken about ten years, the Anykščių Vynas company expanded to a great extent. After the restoration of Lithuanian independence, the company used its experience and professionalism in the alcohol industry and introduced new product lines of bitters, liqueurs, vodkas and other products. In 2004, Anykščių Vynas AB was privatized. Production was optimised and strategic goals were outlined with the principal goal of preserving the production of traditional, natural and high-quality products.

DID YOU KNOW? The first lithuanian book of culinary was written by Liudvika Didžiulienė in 1893. The mother of 8 managed to reflect the real taste of Aukštaitija region cuisine. These days the most popular dish in Didžiuliai memorial homestead is „Leguminas“ - a pie of boiled sweet potatoes.

During the times when lithuanian press was pro- hibited, first lithuanian culinary book „Lietuvos gaspadinē“ was written. The book was first published as addition of a newspaper „Ūkininkas“ in 1893. It was written by a woman who was interested in litera- ture - Liudvika Didžiulienė-Žmona.
L. Didžiulienė is not only an author of the first lithua- nian culinary book. She was also a beletrist, debuted in press in 1892. Only after few years more women were known as writers, such as Gabrielė Petkevičaitė- Bitė, po to Žemaitė, Šatrijos Ragana, Lazdynų Pelėda. L. Didžiulienė gathered and published folk- lore and memories about Antanas Vienažindis, Anta- nas Strazdas, priest Kleopas Kozmianas, Valerijonas Ažukalnis-Zagurskis. Before her death, she wrote her own memories, which was published after her death in 1926.
