  • Karina Van Dalen-Oskam
Karina van Dalen-Oskam Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences), The Hague Personal names in literature: a quantitative approach1 1 Introduction Is it possible to write a novel that does not have a single personal name in it? Or better perhaps: a readable novel? Undoubtedly there are more, but I know of only one that does not contain any names, be it personal, geographical, or other: Blindness, a novel by the Portugese 1998 Nobel Prize winner José Saramago. The novel describes how an unexplained mass epidemic of blindness afflicts nearly everyone in an unnamed city and depicts the horrible social breakdown that follows. The epidemic ends just as sudden and unexplained as it started. The characters in this novel do not get a name, but they are described with a noun phrase referring to what they are: the doctor, the doctor’s wife, the first blind man, the old man with the black eyepatch, the girl with dark glasses, the boy with the squint.2 Formally these noun phrases are not names but they are uniquely referring in the story world of the novel and thus share an important function with names. The avoidance of names has a clear function in the story, as can be illustrated with a quotation from the first part of the novel. Most of the main characters, being the very first group of people that went blind, have been placed in quarantine in an asylum. When a new group of blind men and women arrive in their ward, The doctor's wife remarked, It would be best if they could be counted and each person gave their name.

Neophilologus (2007) 91:83–100 Ó Springer 2007 DOI 10.1007/s11061-005-4247-9 HISTORIA DE UNA FASCINACIO´ N: BORGES EN HOLANDA MAARTEN STEENMEIJER Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Faculteit der Letteren, Afdeling Romaanse Talen en Culturen, Postbus 9044, 6500 KD, Nijmegen E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In Out of Context. Historical Reference and the Representation of Reality in Borges, Daniel Balderston claims that the interpretative practice of Jorge Luis Borges’s short stories has tended to focus on the ‘unreal’, that is, on its autoreferential, fictional and fantastic elements, and that, on the other hand, allusions and references to the concrete, historical reality in the work of the Argentinian writer have been disregarded or even neglected. In a departure from this dichotomist perspective, this article proposes a study of Borges’s reception in the Netherlands from the very beginning in the fifties until the present day, attempting to ascertain the positions and functions of Borges’s work in the Dutch literary system. 1.

Coetzee’s previously pub- lished novels and autobiographical fictions are discussed at length, and there is extensive treatment of his translations, scholarly books and essays, and volumes of correspondence. Confronting Coetzee’s works on the grounds of his practice, the chapters address his craft, his literary relations and horizons, and the inter- actions of his writings with other arts, disciplines, and institutions. Produced by an international team of contributors, the chapters open up avenues of discovery, and explore Coetzee’s undiminished ability to challenge and surprise his readers with inventive works of striking power and intensity.
Nell’anno di Donald Trump e del Nobel per la letteratura a Bob Dylan, “Another Side of America” sarà l’approfondimento sugli Stati Uniti.

  • Prescribed Literature in Translation: Additional Guidance Critical Summaries of Selected Works
Diploma Programme Prescribed literature in translation: Additional guidance Critical summaries of selected works © International Baccalaureate Organization 2012 1 Purpose of this document This publication is intended to provide teachers with additional guidance in teaching the Diploma Programme language A courses for first teaching from September 2011. It should be read in conjunction with the Prescribed literature in translation (PLT) list (2011), and the language A guides. The purpose of this teacher support material is to help teachers choose works in translation for study in the language A courses. The IB has ensured that the PLT list offers not only works which are classics in the global sense, but also works which are classics within the literary tradition of their original language of publication. These may not yet have received international recognition. In the case of such works, information in the IB’s working languages may not be readily available. Thus, when planning a language A course of study, teachers may experience difficulty in deciding whether such a work will fit in with the other works on their planned course, or provide suitable material for their student group. This document aims to provide teachers with information about selected works from the PLT in order to help them make more informed choices as they construct their language A courses. It is hoped that this document will empower teachers to choose from a wider range of works on the PLT, and consequently improve student access to a diverse range of literature. The intended audience for this document is teachers. However, the information is directly relevant to students; teachers are therefore encouraged to share this document with them, as appropriate.
