VAN ESSEN Il existe, sur le Forum Romain, adoss6e aux gradins qui portent a la plateforme de la Basilique ?milienne, une petite construction circulaire. Cette fois les topographes sont d'accord pour y recon- naitre le Sacellum (parce qu'il est à ciel nu 1) ) Veneris Cloacinae. En effet, il se dresse exactement la ou la Cloaca Maxima passe ' au-dessous de la Basilique 2). La litt6rature arch6ologique en a un peu n6glig6 le probl6me central: pourquoi a cet endroit un sacellum de Venus 3) ? Plusieurs fois des personnes se demandent ce que la d6esse de la beaute peut avoir a faire avec une cloaque. Schilling, la these duquel sur le culte de V6nus a Rome paraitra sous peu, a eu l'obligeance de m'informer que ses id6es sur V6nus se rencontrent sur plusieurs points avec les miennes (voir ad- dendum). En outre il m'a averti qu'une 6tude sur Cloacina a 6t6 publi6e pendant la guerre par M. Basanow (La V6nus du Forum et de la N6cropole d'Orvieto dans Rev. d'Histoire des Religions LXIII (1942/3), Vol. CXXVI, p. 5 ss.). Selon M. Basanow Cloacina, identifi6e plus tard avec V6nus, est ,,cousine germaine" d'une d6esse (Voltumna ?) d'Orvi6to repr6sent6e sous les traits de V6nus (cp. pour elle Not. Scavi 1885, 33 ss. sur le Sepolcreto di Cannicella). On la v6n6rait au bord d'une conduite d'eau courante comme ,,reine des morts", et M.B. fait observer que Cloacina, elle aussi, est voisine de l'ancien sepulcretum du Forum Romain, mais on a port6 en ce cas I'accent sur son caract6re de "nymphe protectrice de 1'eau courante". M. Basanow part d'un "certain scheme du foie de Plaisance sciemment reproduit sur le terrain". Rom I, 2, p. 398 et de Ruggiero, Foro Rom., pp. 182/4 ont entrevu le probl6me sans toutefois 1'envisager r6ellement. I38 sur la faute initiale qui a cree la difficult6. Pour la r6soudre il faut garder present que le monument actuel est d'6poque imp6riale, mais qu'au-dessous il existe des restes de 1'epoque syllane 1), tandis que la tradition nous permet de remonter plus haut, probable- ment a 1'epoque royale 2). Ainsi nous devons affronter la question de savoir, qui était la Venus primitive de sorte qu'elle pouvait etre identifi6e avec une Cloacina 3). Seule 1'6tymologie du mot Venus, donc, peut nous tirer de 1'embarras. Or, Venus n'est pas la divinite de la beaute feminine, elle 1'est ' devenue a la suite du contact avec 1'Aphrodite grecque. Le mot uenus, de la racine *,uenes', est apparent6 avec le n6erlandais-fla- mand wens (angl. wish; allem. Wiinsch, cf. Wonne), ce qui signifie d6sir, dans le cas sp6cifique d6sir 6rotique 4). Cela est confirme par la signification originale d'un mot apparente : uenenuyrc de *uenes- nom qui n'est pas, a l'origine, venin, poison, mais philtre, une boisson qui doit exciter ce d6sir 5). D'ailleurs, pour l'Aphrodite grecque, 1'histoire n'est pas tres differente; meme 1'epoque classique a conserve le souvenir d'Aphrodite deesse 1tOCpOCL't'LOÇde 1'engen- drement 6). 1) T. Frank, Rom. Cloacina) rejette absolument une Venus Cloacina. Steuding (Roscher, Myth. Lex., s.v. Cloacina) dans une note breve renvoie a Venus et a Concordia. Ibid., s.v. Concordia R. Peter (915, 4 ss.) d6clare que Concordia, comme Cloacina, est une manifestation de V6nus. I1 reste tout de meme acquis que Pline l'Anc. (Nat. Hist. I.I. rejettent; mais elle cadre tres bien avec la maniere dont Homere use ce mot Od. VIII, 269 (cp. 11. XXIV, i3o et Od. The goddess was associated with the City’s very foundation, and Romans believed that the continuity of the state depended on the sexual and moral purity of her priestesses. In this dissertation, Virgin Territory: The Vestals and the Transition from Republic to Principate, I examine the Vestal cult between c. 150 BCE and 14 CE, that is, from the beginning of Roman domination in the Mediterranean to the establishment of authoritarian rule at Rome. Six aspects of the cult are discussed: the Vestals’ relationship with water in ritual and literature; a re-evaluation of Vestal incestum (unchastity) which seeks a nuanced approach to the evidence and examines the record of incestum cases; the Vestals’ extra-ritual activities; the Vestals’ role as custodians of politically sensitive documents; the Vestals’ legal standing relative to other Roman women, especially in the context of Augustus’ moral reform legislation; and the cult’s changing relationship with the topography of Rome in light of the construction of a new shrine to Vesta on the Palatine after Augustus became pontifex maximus in 12 BCE. It will be shown that the cult of Vesta did not survive the turmoil of the Late Republic unchanged, nor did it maintain its ancient prerogative in the face of Augustus’ ascendancy.

Description: Spanning the Mediterranean basin and extending into Europe and North Africa, the Roman Empire included a wide variety of urban spaces. In this course, we will examine three cities on the Italian peninsula—Rome, Ostia, and Pompeii—which offer examples of traditional architectural form and urban development. Rome, as capital of the empire, establishes prototypical monuments which are exported outward. Ostia, port city of Rome, reflects the developments in architecture and design in the capital but as a working-class city offers insight into different strata of Roman society. Finally, Pompeii reflects the wealth of an elite resort community embedded in a small-scale urban environment. By examining the individual architectural elements and organization of these three ancient cities, we will observe the standard forms of urban Romanitas (“Roman-ness”) and its significant variations. Please note that this course will focus on architecture and architectural decoration as well as concepts of urban planning and design. The course is not intended as a broad survey of Roman art. Also be aware that as a 300 level course, we will move at a fast pace and focus on precise, detailed readings of the material: exams will require a thorough understanding of specific information rather than “general” impressions. Schladweiler, Historian, Arizona Water & Pollution Control Association Mankind has routinely sought, through the ages, strength and guidance from the spirit world. The Romans, during the course of their Empire (650 BCE – 400 AD), worshipped many deities … one of them being the Goddess Cloacina – in whom they placed their faith/trust for the wellbeing of Rome’s sewers (and workers); a facet of Rome’s public works infrastructure that was considered vital to their desired way of life - good health through sanitation. Cloacina was the patron goddess of the Cloaca Maxima (the main drain of the City) and the city’s overall sewer system. Over time, the Romans came to also think of her in a multitude of other ways including; as the goddess of purity, the goddess of filth and the protector of sexual intercourse in marriage. As such, over the ages, she came to be affiliated with Venus; and, gradually became known to many as the Venus Cloacina. The first “sewer” segments (as opposed to Rome’s initial surfaced and open topped drainage ditches) of the Cloaca Maxima were started in the late 500’s BCE; the craftsmen were Etruscan – Rome’s neighbors to the North. Soon thereafter, it is told that a statue of a woman was found in the sewer. She became known as the Goddess Cloacina; a deity that likely had its origin in the mythology of the Etruscans. Cloacina’s name is possibly derived from either the Latin verb “cloare or cluere” (to wash, to purify or to clean) or, from the Latin word cloaca, meaning “sewer”.

Lippai Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor Sarah Levin-Richardson Classics This thesis examines the urban development of the Roman urbs during the first century BCE. The cities of southern Umbria provide a case study of a wider phenomenon occurring throughout Italy following the municipalization of the peninsula after the Social War. Using archaeology and contemporary cultural analysis, I examine the development of their fora, theaters, and amphitheaters through the century. These public spaces and buildings demonstrate the concept of recirculation that occurs when architectural design ideas flow between Italian cities and Rome, informing one another until refined into a standard form. The canonical form of these Roman buildings, while set in Rome, are indebted to the contributions made in these cities. The development of the Roman urbs and these urban features into a standardized form demonstrate a confluence of culture, innovation, and mimicry under Roman power and are a visual demonstration of the unification of Italy under Rome. Very little is written about this building, despite its imposing size and commanding location at the juncture of the Forum Roma- num and the two crests of the Capitoline hill. It remains a cipher, unconsidered and unexplained. This thesis provides an explanation for the construction of the Tabularium consonant with the building’s composi- tion and siting, the character of the man who commissioned it, and the political climate at the time of its construction — reconciling the Tabularium’s location and design with each of these factors. Previous analyses of the Tabularium dwelt on its topo- graphic properties as a monumental backdrop for the Forum to the exclusion of all else. This thesis proposes the Tabularium was created by the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla as a military installation forging an architectural nexus between political and religious authority in Rome. Encompassing the entire panorama of the second- century forum from his elevated vantage point, he points out places of assembly and religious sites, temples and porticoes (462-86). Along with each monument, he singles out real-life Romans wandering among the buildings, and highlights their similarity to the stock-characters of the comoedia palliata. Previous discussions of this passage have focused primarily on determining the performance’s location in the forum Romanum, as well as on exploring the types of people mentioned in the monologue (Moore 1991; Marshall 2006: 40-45). This paper posits that the edifices mentioned by the choragus are “readable” too (compare, e.g., Edwards 1996; Larmour-Spencer 2007; Thalmann 2011). In factoring these lost three-dimensional inter-“texts” back into an analysis of the scene, I argue that the choragus presents Roman comedy as the culmination of Rome’s imperial aspirations and, furthermore, as a means for lower social strata to claim control over their city and its empire. Temples, colonnades, and monuments told the story of Rome’s rise to power and the city’s place in the contemporary world even to illiterate onlookers. The choragus’s list of urban structures reminds the audience of Rome’s cultural superiority and at once guides them chronologically through the urbs’s history. Thus his reference to the temple of Venus Cloacina (Cloacinae sacrum, 471), appropriately placed at the speech’s beginning, recalls Aeneas’s descent from the Goddess of Love.
