ABSTRACT This is the first reappraisaL of the supernaturaL symboLism of the threshoLd in over a century. This thesis wilL chaLLenge the notion that this LiminaL Location was significant in Greek and Roman superstition and foLkLore – from apotropaic devices appLied to the door, to Lifting the bride over the threshold – because it was believed to be haunted by ghosts. In Part One, this thesis examines the evidence of prophyLactic devices and magic speLLs used at the threshoLd, aLong with the potentiaL for human buriaL under the doorway, and concludes that there is no evidence for such a belief. However, this thesis does find evidence for a beLief in the haunting of ghosts at the equaLLy LiminaL Location of the crossroads. Part Two anaLyses threshoLd rituaLs pertaining to the Roman marriage ceremony and uses van Gennep’s tripartite framework of the rite of passage to argue that the threshold can be seen as symboLising the bride’s transition to a new household. This thesis argues that this rite of passage did not only apply to virgin brides, but was aLso appLicabLe to those remarrying, as the goaL behind many of the rituals was to safely ensconce the bride into her new house and famiLy. Hung. 57, 2017, 57–82 DOI: 10.1556/068.2017.57.1.5 DANIELA URBANOVÁ LATIN CURSE TEXTS: MEDITERRANEAN TRADITION AND LOCAL DIVERSITY Summary: There are altogether about six hundred Latin curse texts, most of which are inscribed on lead tablets. The extant Latin defixiones are attested from the 2nd cent. BCE to the end of the 4th and begin- ning of the 5th century. However, the number of extant tablets is certainly not final, which is clear from the new findings in Mainz recently published by Blänsdorf (2012, 34 tablets),1 the evidence found in the fountain dedicated to Anna Perenna in Rome 2012, (26 tablets and other inscribed magical items),2 or the new findings in Pannonia (Barta 2009).3 The curse tablets were addressed exclusively to the supernatural powers, so their authors usually hid them very well to be banished from the eyes of mortals; not to speak of the randomness of the archaeological findings. Thus, it can be assumed that the preserved defixiones are only a fragment of the overall ancient production. Remarkable diversities in cursing practice can be found when comparing the preserved defixiones from particular provinces of the Roman Empire and their specific features, as this contribution wants to show.     Transcript What was the Parentalia? Dr Emma-Jayne Graham: The Parentalia was a nine-day Roman festival that took place every year between 13th and 21st February. During the festival families would gather together to celebrate, to remember and to appease the dead. Initially in their homes but also in the cemetery. The main purpose of the Parentalia seems to have been to make sure that the restless dead were content in the afterlife. That they stayed in their graves and that they didn’t terrorise the living. The first eight days of the Parentalia saw people in their homes performing rituals of purification. And for this reason we know very little about these private aspects of the festival. But, on the final day, known as the Feralia they would congregate in the cemetery and honour the dead with a very public display of offerings, of prayers and of flowers. Culminating in a great banquet held right there in the cemetery outside the tomb and in the company of their ancestors. And some tombs were equipped with small ovens. Meaning that fresh bread could be made right there on the spot ready for the occasion. And individual graves also sometimes had tubes inserted into them so that the dead could receive their share of the wine, of the honey and of the bread that their relatives were enjoying. The poet Ovid writes about the Parentalia in his work on the Roman calendar and he describes it as an inauspicious time for business and for weddings. Because it was a moment when the unlucky shades of the dead were very close to the world of the living.

    Vestal Virgins and Their Families Andrew B. Gallia* I. INTRODUCTION There is perhaps no more shining example of the extent to which the field of Roman studies has been enriched by a renewed engagement with anthropology and other cognate disciplines than the efflorescence of interest in the Vestal virgins that has followed Mary Beard’s path-breaking article regarding these priestesses’ “sexual status.”1 No longer content to treat the privileges and ritual obligations of this priesthood as the vestiges of some original position (whether as wives or daughters) in the household of the early Roman kings, scholars now interrogate these features as part of the broader frameworks of social and cultural meaning through which Roman concepts of family, * Published in Classical Antiquity 34.1 (2015).     TransAntiquity TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread “transgender dynamics” were in antiquity. Domitilla Campanile (PhD 1992) is Associate Professor of Roman History at the University of Pisa, Italy. Filippo Carlà-Uhink is Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, UK. After studying in Turin and Udine, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and as Assistant Professor for Cultural History of Antiquity at the University of Mainz, Germany.     6 Of Rules and Regulations Governing Mourning Grief involves the loss of a social relationship that had served as an anchor. This loss disorients. Not knowing what to do, the grief-stricken want to be showed what to do, told what to do. A standardized ritual to follow step by step and a person to guide one through it can help. In the language of “governmentality” theorists, grief is a time to be governed, whether this governing is to be done by familial elders, religious specialists, secular ritual practitioners, or government employees.1 In this regard, the funeral of Mr. Wang was typical. Mr. Wang’s children, espe- cially his younger daughter, were exhausted from the extra work of caring for their father during his dying days. In this period, the children avoided discussing death. While they told the middle daughter to return from England, too much talk of dying and funerals would have made it seem like they had abandoned all hope of a cure and were wishing their father dead. Mr. Wang himself was never directly told of his prognosis. When death occurred, the children were exhausted, bereaved, and unprepared. They needed someone to tell them how to proceed. A little nudge from their helper led them to Mr. Chen. They were more than happy to have him to guide them through the process. While all rituals might involve standardized procedure, funerals especially are times for limiting choice. Here a contrast with weddings illuminates. In modern marriages, choice is a necessary component. When the Communist Party came to power in 1949, it banned purely arranged marriages.

    The Evolution of the Roman Calendar Dwayne Meisner, University of Regina Abstract The Roman calendar was first developed as a lunar | 290 calendar, so it was difficult for the Romans to reconcile this with the natural solar year. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar, creating a solar year of 365 days with leap years every four years. This article explains the process by which the Roman calendar evolved and argues that the reason February has 28 days is that Caesar did not want to interfere with religious festivals that occurred in February. Beginning as a lunar calendar, the Romans developed a lunisolar system that tried to reconcile lunar months with the solar year, with the unfortunate result that the calendar was often inaccurate by up to four months. Caesar fixed this by changing the lengths of most months, but made no change to February because of the tradition of intercalation, which the article explains, and because of festivals that were celebrated in February that were connected to the Roman New Year, which had originally been on March 1. Introduction The reason why February has 28 days in the modern calendar is that Caesar did not want to interfere with festivals that honored the dead, some of which were Past Imperfect 15 (2009) | © | ISSN 1711-053X | eISSN 1718-4487 connected to the position of the Roman New Year.     Laudatio Prof. Dr. Ulrich Albrecht, FU Berlin, Otto-Suhr-Institut Sehr verehrte Familie Röhl, sehr verehrte Festversammlung! Im Wintersemester 1988/89 war ich Gast an der TH Darmstadt und augenscheinlich Zeuge der Entstehung der IANUS-Gruppe. Aufgrund einer über die Jahre anhaltenden persönlichen Verbindung möchte ich diesen Tag der Freude nutzen, um die Laudatio eher heiter anzulegen - weniger als wissenschaftlich korrekte Würdigung der Tätigkeit der IANIER (dies auch), sondern als Reflexion über den selbstgewählten Namen der Gruppe. Wer oder was ist IANUS? Die Artbeitsgruppe hat seinerzeit gewiß mit Bedacht den Namen dieses antiken Gottes gewählt, als Vorbild. Also weiter gefragt: Was hat Janus seinerzeit und in der Neuzeit gemacht - schließlich geht es um eine Laudatio. Wer waren die Partner oder gar die Partnerin? Beim antiken Janus ist das bekannt, beim modernen weiß ich es nicht. In beiden Fällen sind aber Folgen aus den Partnerschaften entstanden, die viele Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen, wie gleich aufgezeigt werden wird. Schließlich gefragt: Was wird aus IANUS, was ist seinerzeit aus Janus geworden? Wer ist Janus? Im alten Rom der Gott der Anfänge, der Türen und Tore, der Durchblicke und Durchgänge. Das ist eine bezeichnende Perspektive für die heutigen IANIer: der Arbeitsgruppe ging es und geht es um Anfänge, um Durchblicke, um Verbindungen zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Gesellschafts-wissenschaft. In der bildenden Kunst wird Janus dargestellt mit zwei - in entgegengesetzte Richtung blickenden - Gesichtern, manchmal gar mit vier Gesichtern. Er sieht einfach alles, darunter - so ja auch der moderne IANUS - was andere nicht sehen. Sein griechischer Vorgänger wurde Panoptes, der Allesseher, genannt, er war einer der mythischen Giganten. Der blickte einfach alles, und die Griechen stellten sich vor, daß sein ganzer Kopf mit Augen besetzt war.

Signed: 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is primarily a cultural history of abortion in the early medieval West. It is a historical study of perceptions, rather than the practice, of abortion. The span covered ranges from the sixth century, when certain localised ecclesiastical initiatives in the form of councils and sermons addressed abortion, through to the ninth century, when some of these initiatives were integrated into pastoral texts produced in altogether different locales. The thesis uses a range of predominantly ecclesiastical texts – canonical collections, penitentials, sermons, hagiography, scriptural commentaries, but also law- codes – to bring to light the multiple ways in which abortion was construed, experienced and responded to as a moral and social problem. Although there is a concerted focus upon the ecclesiastical tradition on abortion, a focus which ultimately questions how such a tradition ought to be understood, the thesis also explores the broader cultural significance of abortion. Early medieval churchmen, rulers, and jurists saw multiple things in abortion and there were multiple perspectives upon abortion. The thesis illuminates the manifold and, occasionally, surprising ways in which abortion was perceived in relation to gender, sexuality, politics, theology and the church. The history of early medieval abortion has been largely underwritten. Moreover, it has been inadequately historicised.
