And we would like to invite you to come and learn Chinese language and culture along with many other available courses. Founded in 1998, Sias University was approved by the State Council and licensed by the Henan Provincial Education Commission to carry out higher institutional education. It is an accredited university in China. Sias University offers both degree and non-degree programs for overseas students. Degree programs cover all bachelor degrees offered in the University, while non-degree programs provide overseas students Chinese Language Training Programs in various forms. The aim of Sias University is to develop diligent and innovative professionals to meet the urgent demands of trans-national corporations and enterprises. Combining both Chinese educational philosophies with a Western model of education, international students have access to alternative ways of thinking and learning in China. Affiliated with Zhengzhou University, as well as Fort Hays State University of Kansas, USA, it was developed and designed in response to the most current educational demands. It is the first full-time undergraduate university approved by the Degree Committee of the State Council in China to grant both Chinese and American Bachelor's Degrees. SIAS is also fully accredited by China's Ministry of Education. SIAS is located in Zhengzhou city, Henan province, which is the hometown of Chinese humanistic ancestor, the Yellow Emperor. It covers a floor area of 160 hectares, and owns a variety of teaching buildings that covers about 900,000 square meters. The school environment is composed by a combination of European style modern garden and Chinese classic garden, the teaching building group is a mix of European style and Chinese style buildings, and there are complete sports, music, and art teaching facilities and stadiums in the university, all of these facts have not only reflected SIAS’ idea of running a school between China and the West, but also embodies it’s consciousness of time and space in the current international education environment and the thought of educating people in an all-round way on morality, intelligence, sport, music and art. Being in the campus, you will feel like being in an emotional conversation between the culture of East and west architecture and garden. East and west, ancient and modern, all of these have suddenly turned into stereo music. The green hills and blue waters are forming into the international growth atmosphere for students. In the aspect of programs, SIAS insists on the way of running a school for both professional and characteristic development. There are 15 colleges, 35 bachelor degree programs, 14 associate degree programs and 6 Sino-foreign cooperative programs; it has formed the coordinated development program system which is mainly consisted by 8 categories of management, humanities and social sciences programs. Since 2008, SIAS has started cultivating master degree for Chinese students in 7 programs. Today SIAS has an enrollment of over 29,600 students and employs over 1,750 full-time faculty members, including more than 150 full-time foreign teachers. SIAS' ratio of foreign faculty to students ranks first in China. The college insists on the road of international cooperation in running school, it has started friendly exchange and cooperation with more than 150 universities from about 38 countries including the United States, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. By June 30, 2019, SIAS has accepted about 800 international students for its non-degree and degree programs, it has a wide range of student resource, those students are from over 26 countries and areas including United States, France, Brazil, South Africa, Zambia, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia and Taiwan of China. Chinese Language and Culture Program Program Introduction Chinese Language Studies Program is open to international students who love Chinese Language and Chinese culture. Students learn Chinese at SIAS as full-time general visiting students. Instruction is divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Class size is approximately fifteen students per class. Normally class hours are from Monday to Friday, four academic hours per day, twenty hours per week. Besides Chinese language studies in the classroom, SIAS also offers program students a series of activities to experience Chinese culture and get a deeper understanding of China. Upon completion of the program students will receive a program certificate and an official transcript. The program is normally one semester long, but students could apply for extending their study period to at most one year. Curriculum Comprehensive Reading, Oral Chinese, Chinese Listening, Chinese Characters, Reading, Writing, Introduce to China, Traditional Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Martial Arts, Chinese Folk Song etc. Duration Fall Semester: September- January Spring Semester: February - July Qualification The applicant is expected to study hard and will observe the Chinese laws and the regulations of Sias University. The application should have a high school diploma or have the equivalent educational background of a high school diploma. The applicant should be 18 to 25 years old. Undergraduate Program Program Introduction Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4 to 6 years and fulfill the designated number of credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the bachelor’s degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee. Students will get two diplomas, one is from SIAS and another is from Fort Hays State University (USA). The purpose is to develop a student/advisor relationship that will focus on finding solutions or developing strategies to address current content course work area and/or discover paths to reaching goals beyond the classroom. These could include advanced study, resume development, job search, or sorting through the issues of transition from classroom to workplace. It is a relationship that will build a solid and firm partnership and allow mentors to gain insight to issues important to Chinese university students at SIAS. For more information about SIAS go to WWW.SIAS.EDU.CN Contacts between mentors and mentees will be a minimum of twice per month by e-mail, phone, or SKYPE. We will request a one-page monthly report on the nature of the mentor/mentee exchange so we can use your experience to strengthen and build the program. We will celebrate the success of the program in May at the 10 th Anniversary of SIAS University by convening the mentees and as many mentors as we can to the campus for this celebration. Sajnovsky, Professor Emerita of Music, Secretary, SEPRS UOG SEPRS An Overview of the Society’s Eighteenth Annual Report (2014) I want to highlight the vitality that members of the Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars (SEPRS) have shown in numerous academic, research, and service activities. For many of the UOG community – but not all – their awareness of professors emeriti and retired scholars is “out of sight, out of mind.” Yet this report demonstrates how retired faculty continue to help the University achieve its mission for our community and the region. You can locate specific faculty which are listed alphabetically, and in- time we plan to insert a “search-link” function so you can easily click on a name. SEPRS has 53 current members, of whom half live on Guam (26) and half live off-island across the nation (27). Some of us show the affects of our age, yet3/4ths (38) are active members who participate in the Society’s quarterly meetings, donate to the University, or at least report their activities. In 2014, using IT teleconferencing video technology, we have had five (5) off-island members regularly join and participate in the Society’s quarterly meetings held in Emeritus Hall on-island. So what do these retirees do? Well nearly one-third of the members listed in this report are teaching and mentoring university students. For example at UOG that includes Filomena Contoria, George Kallingal, Lourdes Klitzke, and Milagros Moguel, and off-island take a look at Joyce McCauley.
