Depósito Legal……. INICIACIÓN A LA HISTORIA DE LA MÚSICA PRÓLOGO Desde milenios el placer de la música se halla profundamente arraigado en el hombre. Junto a la religión, se cuenta entre las necesidades espirituales más primigenias del ser humano y en nuestro mundo tecnificado esta necesidad sigue absolutamente vigente. Los comienzos de la música se desconocen. Según los mitos de los pueblos, la música es de origen divino. En la época primitiva, la música pertenecía al ámbito del culto, su sonido era el conjuro de lo invisible. La idea occidental de la música se remonta a la Antigüedad griega, así como a las culturas avanzadas antiguas de las regiones de Asia Menor y del Lejano Oriente. Es de resaltar que algunos instrumentos parecen haber existido en todos los tiempos, incluso en los prehistóricos. Entre este patrimonio primitivo se cuentan los percutores, como golpeteo rítmico de pies y palmadas; las sonajas; raspas y maderas vibradoras; tambores; flautas; cuernos de animales y arcos musicales que son el comienzo de todos los instrumentos de cuerda. Resulta notable que sólo los instrumentos electrónicos del siglo veinte aportan novedades fundamentales al repertorio instrumental. Durante la Antigüedad greco-romana, la música fue tributaria de la poesía y del teatro, así como en otras muchas civilizaciones. En los primeros nueve siglos de nuestra Era dependía de la liturgia, de la que constituía uno de los elementos esenciales. Paulatinamente, la música se preocupará cada vez más por los problemas técnicos y por la búsqueda de nuevas fórmulas musicales, independientemente de su utilización cultural o dramática. Precisamente es en este momento crucial, da comienzo esta Iniciación a la Historia de la Música, que realiza, de manera breve y sencilla, un recorrido por los movimientos más importantes de la música occidental y presenta a los autores más relevantes de nuestro patrimonio sonoro. Monjes, trovadores, juglares, damas y religiosas ilustradas nos hacen revivir la compleja Edad Media. Más tarde serán las cortes del Renacimiento, del Barroco y del Clasicismo con sus excelsos compositores las que elevarán la música a niveles nunca conocidos y que continuarán durante la época romántica. La brillantez de la música nacionalista vibra casi al mismo tiempo que el nacimiento de las nuevas tendencias del siglo veinte. Una breve presentación de la música de nuestro tiempo nos conduce a un recorrido por la música de la Región de Murcia. El texto presenta la novedad de editarse en versión trilingüe, español-inglés-francés. Con ello se pretende lograr un doble objetivo, por una parte desarrollar entre nuestros alumnos el interés por la música, lengua universal y parte esencial del patrimonio cultural europeo y, por otra, mejorar los conocimientos en lenguas extranjeras, objetivos por los que esta Consejería de Educación y Cultura ha apostado decididamente. Esperamos que esta publicación sea útil al profesorado y grata y provechosa a los alumnos para que suponga un paso más en favor del conocimiento de la música y las lenguas de nuestro entorno cultural europeo. JUAN RAMÓN MEDINA PRECIOSO CONSEJERO DE EDUCACIÓN Y CULTURA INICIACIÓN A LA HISTORIA DE LA MÚSICA PRESENTACIÓN En una sociedad intercultural y plurilingüe como la actual, se hace evidente que todo ciudadano de la Unión Europea debe conocer al menos dos lenguas, además de la propia. La Consejería de Educación y Cultura, consciente de esta demanda social, tiene como uno de sus objetivos prioritarios fomentar la enseñanza de idiomas extranjeros entre el alumnado, tanto de Educación Primaria como de Secundaria, de la Región de Murcia. Por este motivo, la Consejería de Educación y Cultura, a través de la Dirección General de Formación Profesional e Innovación Educativa, ha decidido hacer un esfuerzo en pro de los idiomas europeos y publicar esta edición trilingüe que tienen en sus manos y que sale a la luz con un doble objetivo: aproximar al alumnado al mundo de la música, de una forma sencilla y clara, al tiempo que se ofrece también el texto en lengua inglesa y francesa, con sus correspondientes cuestiones y propuestas de audiciones musicales. Además, se ha pensado en la importancia que este manual puede tener para las Secciones Bilingües de Español- Inglés y Español- Francés repartidas por toda nuestra Región, ya que la asignatura de Música se imparte en bilingüe en muchos de estos centros como disciplina no lingüística y la música es un vínculo hacia los idiomas que atrae la atención y aumenta la motivación del alumnado por aprender idiomas. Así pues, deseo que la Iniciación a la Historia de la Música sea útil a profesores y alumnos y felicitarlos de antemano por los esfuerzos que realizan cotidianamente para avanzar en el aprendizaje de idiomas y conseguir una enseñanza de calidad, objetivo que compartimos con el resto de nuestros socios europeos. Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. LORI RHODEN - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2013 Liszt was born in the part of western Hungary that became known today as the Burgenland. As one of the leaders of the Romantic movement in music, Liszt developed new methods of piano performance and composition; he anticipated the ideas/procedures of music in the 20th century. He also promoted the method of thematic transformation as part of his revolution in form, made radical experiments in harmony, and invented the symphonic poem for orchestra. He was a composer, teacher and most importantly, a highly accomplished pianist. As one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, he had excellent technique and a dazzling performance ability that gained him fame and enabled the spreading of the knowledge of other composers’ music. He was also committed to preserving and promoting the best music from the past, including Bach, Handel, Schubert, Weber and Beethoven. Liszt had a strong religious background, which was contradictory to his love for worldly sensationalism. It is fair, however, to say that he was a great man who had a positive influence on people around him. From the 1830-1840’s, Liszt developed a new vocabulary for technique and musical expression in the piano world. He was able to do so partly because of the advances in the mechanical construction of the instrument.

American Record Guide August 2020 ( - 2020.08.01) In 1847 while touring as a pianist in Kiev, Liszt met Polish Princess Carolyne of Sayn–Wittgenstein, who became his companion for the rest of his life. In 1848 he accepted a conducting job in Weimar, where he and the Princess lived until 1861. Carolyne persuaded him to trade performing for composing, and those years, among his most prolific, produced the three works on this program. As a young man, Liszt was already an admirer of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. In the 1840s he considered writing a chorus and orchestra work drawn from it, accompanied by a slideshow of scenes from the poem by German artist Bonaventura Genelli, but nothing came of it. In 1849, he composed Apres une Lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata (the Dante Sonata) for piano. In 1855 he began the Dante Symphony based on the 'Inferno' and 'Purgatorio' sections of Dante's poem. He completed it in 1857. The work begins with Virgil and Dante descending into the Inferno. Liszt supplied no text save for the Magnificat, but he included a few lines from the poem under score staves to guide the conductor's interpretation, most notably the opening brass motifs to the rhythms of the text over the Gates of Hell.

One of the earliest accounts of this exceptional ability appeared in The Scotsman (Edinburgh) discussing a performance of Liszt’s second piano concerto on January 21, 1841: He seems to tear the very soul out of the instrument — he calls into requisition every sound and combination of sounds of which it is capable — to work it up as it were till it produces all the effects of the orchestra. Liszt’s transcendence from piano virtuoso to composer of “serious” orchestral music sparked controversy among nineteenth century critics debating Zukunftsmusik (the music of the future). Such writers questioned how Liszt could synthesize what they considered two distinct compositional directions: that for orchestra, and that for piano.

These were the last words of king Sardanapalus, the last king of Assyria, according to Lord Byron. Throughout the centuries, Europe was confronted with the tragic story of Mesopotamia’s last monarch, a king more effeminate than a woman, a lascivious and idle man, a governor who loathed all expressions of militarism and war. But this story was no more than it proposed to be: a story, not history. Sardanapalus was not even real! The Greeks conceived him; artists, play writers, and cineastes preserved him. Through the imaginative minds of early Modern and Modern historians, artists and dramaturgs, Sardanapalus’ legend endured well into the 20th-century in several different media. Even after the first excavations in Assyria, and the exhumation of its historical archives, where no king by the name of Sardanapalus was recorded, fantasy continued to surpass history. The following article examines the interrelation- ships between his music and the works of literature he chose as inspirations and in some cases as texts to be put to music. I am a lover of music, but not a musician. A literary scholar is not qualified to comment on music, so I will restrict my observations to the texts used by the composer. My other preliminary remark is more personal. In full agreement with Alan Walker’s statement that “the case concerning Wagner’s ‘ingratitude’ may have been overstated by the Lisztians” (Walker, 1997, 353), I do not wish to make any comparison between Liszt and Wagner. The harmonic experimentation of Liszt is well-known, although some experts caution against exaggerations.
