BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Standard Oil, a predominant American integrated oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company, was established in 1870 as a corporation in Ohio. It was the largest oil refiner in the world and operated as a major company trust. It was also one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations until it was broken up by the United States Supreme Court in 1911. Some of the companies resulting from that court- ordered break up were:
• Standard Oil of New Jersey, also known as Esso. Esso was renamed Exxon, which is now part of ExxonMobil. • Standard Oil of New York merged with Vacuum and was renamed Mobil, now part of ExxonMobil. • Standard Oil of Louisiana was always owned by Standard Oil of New Jersey, now ExxonMobil.
Standard Oil of Louisiana began construction of an oil refinery in Baton Rouge in April 1909. During the intervening years the corporation changed names a number of times and expanded the original refinery to include an increasingly complex interrelated set of petroleum refineries and chemical plants using feed stock from local and more distant refineries.
The Humble Oil Company incorporated in Texas in 1911. That entity reorganized in 1917 and incorporated as the Humble Oil and Refining Company. In February 1919, Humble doubled the number of shares authorized and sold 50 percent of its stock to Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. In the 1950s Standard Oil of New Jersey began to reconsider its relationship with Humble Oil such that by 1959 Humble and Standard Oil of New Jersey consolidated domestic operations. By the end of the year Esso Standard and the Carter Oil Company, other affiliates of Standard of New Jersey, were incorporated into Humble, and in 1960 they were joined by other affiliates including Enjay Chemical. The corporate name change from Standard Oil of New Jersey to Exxon Corporation took effect January 1, 1973. In this same era Humble Oil and Refining Company became Exxon USA and Esso Chemicals and Enjay Chemicals merged into Exxon Chemicals. As of 2015, the refineries and chemical plants in Baton Rouge retain the name ExxonMobil.
Unless materials are explicitly identified by one of the predecessor corporations or a subdivision thereof, any references to ExxonMobil in this finding should be understood to include all the predecessor entities now encompassed by that corporate name.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of three series: printed materials, publication materials, and photographs.
Printed materials include a wide range of formats created by or about ExxonMobil Baton Rouge, its predecessors or divisions, and the petroleum industry in general. Among the materials in this series are local company newsletter(s) and a variety of advertisements, brochures, and posters related to the petroleum industry, its refineries, and chemical plants.
Publication materials contain materials created by the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge public relations department and its predecessors’ in-house print media. These primary include photographs published in the corporate newsletter, Baton Rouge Record Other materials comprise company advertisements, press releases, and source materials. Dates of the publication materials range from 1924 to 1999 with occasional gaps in the chronology. Please see below for details of the separated publications.
In addition to the photographs used in the Baton Rouge Record found in the series Publication Materials, general photographic files are also found in the collection. These materials are arranged topically, as they arrived from ExxonMobil Public Relations. Photographs document the people, places, and things related to ExxonMobil Baton Rouge and some other related petroleum sites. Identified and unidentified employees and images of refineries and chemical plants form the bulk of the photographic series. The majority of the photographic materials fall in the date range of about 1950 to 1999, with a small amount of material from before 1950. Entities represented include Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Humble Oil, Enjay Chemicals, Exxon Chemical Baton Rouge, Exxon Baton Rouge, Exxon Baytown, Bayway Refinery (Linden, N.J.), Benicia Refinery (Benicia, Ca.), and others.
Separated Materials: The company’s newsletters and related news publications “morgue” were also included with this donation. Those published materials were cataloged separately.
The first newsletter, The Stanocolan, focused on the refinery and was published from 1924 through 1956. The title changed to the Esso News in 1957 and continued under this name until 1966. In 1967 the title changed to the Baton Rouge Record and continued under this title until 1995. In this period a second newsletter began, Exxon ChemUnity News, 1989-1995. This second newsletter focused on the chemical plant side of operations to supplement the refinery side of operations.
In April 1995 a new newsletter, Exxon Neighbor News, began publication. This publication was focused on and distributed to the community living around and near the Baton Rouge refinery and chemical plant complex.
Beginning in October 1995 the Baton Rouge Record and the Exxon ChemUnity News were combined into Red Stick News.
These publications have been removed from the manuscript materials and cataloged separately as publications. They may be found in Hill Memorial Library at the following call numbers:
