Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Chairman’s Report It is with pleasure that I report on the activities of the Central Coast Cricket Association for the 2019- 20 season.

I would like to express thanks to all members of the Board for their hard work during the year. Also the members of the sub committees for the work that they put in during the year in ensuring that cricket on the Central Coast runs smoothly and is a success.

I would also like to express appreciation to all our sponsors who have supported Central Coast Cricket the past year in particular our major sponsor Diggers who have been a major contributor to cricket on the Central Coast for a number of years but more so this year in the role of major sponsor.

The 2019-20 season has been one of change with the departure of Garry Burkinshaw in the latter part of the season. Garry did an exceptional job as Conference Administrator and together with Dave Winiata brought a new professionalism to administration of cricket on the coast. His expertise will be sorely missed, although in the interim I am sure that Dave will fill the void admirably.

In addition to this we also had a major disruption to our final series for 1st and 2nd grade due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Although it was disappointing not being able to play our Grand Finals in both these grades I have no doubt the Committee made the correct decision in not playing these games and placing the health and wellbeing of our players to the forefront. In many ways it was a difficult season with initially the bushfires placing the health of our cricketers at risk then the Covid 19 pandemic. I thank all for their patience during these trying times.

Although the Central Coast were not able to defend the Hogg Silver Shield we were competitive in all facets of representative cricket again. Looking forward to the 2020-21 season and if representative cricket is able to be played then mounting challenges in all competitions. Representative cricket, in particular in the younger age bracket, was affected by bushfires in Southern NSW.

This year Central Coast introduced Youth Leagues in both Men’s and Women’s facets and this was a resounding success. I have no doubt that both these competitions will continue to grow and I am of the opinion that the Friday night timeslot has been an excellent innovation which will cater well for both competitions.

The Umpire’s Association worked hard during the year to keep their numbers to an acceptable level. The unaccredited accredited umpire scheme continues to work well and it is only a matter of time when umpires from this program will transition across to being fully accredited and bolster the ranks of the Umpires Association.

Although no cricket has been played at the new complex at Tuggerah the facility is ready and certainly from next season we will see cricket being played on the 4 grounds at Tuggerah.

The Alan Davidson evening had to be cancelled this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic but I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all award winners and Premiership winners from 3rd Grade down and Kincumber-Avoca Cricket Club for winning both 1st and 2nd Grade Premierships and the 20/20 competition and Lisarow Ourimbah CC for winning the Limited Over Competition. I also take this opportunity to congratulate Lisarow Ourimbah CC for being Club Champions

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors who without their assistance many of the programs we would not be possible. Also, a big thank you to the volunteers at all clubs who give so much of their time for little recognition but without whom we could not function.

Our financial situation is extremely sound as can be seen from the financial reports and the Board continues to work hard to reduce costs to the clubs to ensure that cricket is a game affordable to all who wish to play. We will continue to work with the clubs to ensure that cricket is affordable and that we remain in a strong financial position.

6 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

In conclusion I take this opportunity to thank all the clubs for their support over the past year. It has been an enjoyable experience for both myself and the rest of the board. I will be standing down at the end of this year from both the Board and obviously the position of Chairman. I believe that now is the time for new people to join the board and with that comes new ideas. I wish everyone well and look forward to seeing you all at cricket next season

Paul Deaves Chairman

Conference Administrator Report The 2019/20 was a season which provided plenty of challenges and as we look towards the 2020/21 season there is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding what it will look like given the current Covid 19 pandemic.

The challenges included heat, smoke, wet and finally the Covid 19 Pandemic which eventually caused the 1st & 2nd Grade Finals to be abandoned. During the challenges the CCCA Executive were able to refer to their existing policies and procedures to take what they considered was the most appropriate action at that time. Full credit goes to the club players and volunteers who respected the decisions that were made.

I congratulate the 2019/20 Premiers, Kincumber Avoca who claimed both the Central Coast Cricket Association (CCCA) 1st Grade Premiership and T20 Championship. Congratulations also to Lisarow Ourimbah on claiming the One Day titles whilst also finishing runner-up in the Premiership and T20 competitions and also to Northern Power Orange on winning the Women’s T20 competition.

Lisarow Ourimbah capped off a very successful season by also winning both the senior and junior Club Championship awards.

The season began back in June 2019 with the holding of the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Retiring members, Bob Archer, Glenn Rowlands and Marion Williams where returned to the executive whilst fellow retiree Ashley Roche was replaced on the Executive by John Jewiss with a ballot required to determine the Executive positions.

They joined incumbent Executive Members, Paul Deaves, Gary Kavanagh and Stuart Owen to make up the Executive. At the first Executive Meeting Deaves and Kavanagh were re-appointed as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively.

John Jewiss subsequently resigned from the Executive in February 2020 with Trevor Allison filling the casual vacancy immediately.

The AGM also saw the awarding of Life Memberships to both Glenn Rowlands and Greg Smith. Both Glenn and Greg have been great contributors to Central Coast Cricket in many facets and are worthy recipients of this honour. Unfortunately, the COVID 19 pandemic has prevented the official presentation of the Life Memberships however this will be completed at the first appropriate opportunity.

The role of the Conference Administrator continued into the second year of a two year Service Level Agreement with Cricket NSW with Garry Burkinshaw remaining in this role until he resigned from the position on 27 February 2020. Following his departure Cricket NSW Cricket Manager, David Winiata filled the role.

Once again the position was partly funded via a $20 levy placed on all senior and junior registered players on the Central Coast.

With the two year pilot program expiring in July 2020, the future of this role is still to be decided.

The Executive were very active throughout the season and introduced a number of policies and procedures aimed at making Central Coast Cricket an inclusive and safe environment as well as improving the way in which the Association is administered. Some of these measures included:

7 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

• Adopting updated ’s Policy for Safeguarding Children and Young People • Implementing CCCA Helmet Policy • Implementing Air Quality Policy • Review and updating By-Laws and Senior and Junior Playing Condition • Completed Audit on all Central Coast Cricket facilities • Expanded Club of the Year Program to include both seniors and juniors • Co-ordinated “Peak Performance & Injury Prevention for Cricketers” free seminar • Obtained Grants to off-set affiliation costs for Female cricket • Increased sponsorship

Throughout the year quarterly delegates meetings were held and we appreciate the clubs attendance at these meetings.

Once again a number of sub-committees were held to support CCCA operations and these included; Competition/Grounds Committee, Judiciary Committee, Representative Committee, Finance Committee and Hall of Fame Committee. I thank those people who sat on these committees and I look forward to more people being involved next season.

The off-season was very busy for the Executive who in consultation with Cricket NSW Cricket Manager undertake a review of female cricket on the Central Coast (Refer Female Cricket Report – Page 32). In addition to this they restructured both senior and junior cricket (Refer Competition & Ground Committees Report – Page 17), reviewed and updated the By-Laws and Playing Conditions (thanks to Rob Cross for providing assistance and proof reading document) and also held a Delegates Meeting in September along with a seniors captains meeting and a junior coaches/managers meeting where the requirements for the upcoming season were presented.

The CCCA Executive agreed to a proposal from clubs for Lower Grade and junior teams to wear coloured playing shirts. Discussion took place around wearing full coloured clothing similar to what 1st & 2nd Grade wear for their limited overs competitions. There was some opposition from clubs in relation to this with the CCCA Executive deferring the decision until such time as all clubs were in favour of wearing full coloured clothing.

The CCCA Executive also put a proposal to the clubs regarding the purchasing their cricket balls through the association. The idea of this proposal was to utilise the bulk buying power to obtain a better price, relieve the pressure on clubs finances at the beginning of the season and also ensuring that the CCCA maximised their rebate with Kookaburra.

The proposal saw the CCCA approach Rebel and Everything Sports to obtain quotes to supply the cricket balls. Rebel were the successful company. The club would then ascertain the cost of the balls to clubs taking into consideration the quoted ball price as well as the Kookaburra rebate. The clubs would then place their order (multiple orders could be placed during the season) which would subsequently be submitted to Rebel who in turn would deliver the balls in bulk to the CCCA and in turn invoice the CCCA for payment. Once received the club could arrange to collect their complete order or just what they required at that time. The clubs would only be invoiced for what balls they collected. In January the clubs would be issued with any cricket balls that had not been collected and invoiced for the remainder.

All bar one of the clubs took advantage of this proposal with 2,909 balls ordered. Kookaburra rebate received increased from $870 to $5,874.

2019/20 was another hectic representative season with the CCCA fielding teams in 9 Country Cricket NSW competitions, 4 Cricket NSW junior competitions as well as 5 junior carnivals. Unfortunately due to the Bushfires in the South of the State both the Bradman and Kookaburra Cup carnivals were cancelled.

It was pleasing foe the CCCA to be able to host the Opens Country Cricket NSW Northern Carnival, the first time the CCCA has hosted a carnival in 10 years. The carnival was a success and we look forward to hosting further carnivals in years to come.

8 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

The highlights of the Representative season was undoubtedly the Colts team retaining the Country Cricket NSW Colts title as well as an Opens Women’s Representative and Girls Under 13’s team fielding representative teams for the first time.

On the back of this success Central Coast players were regular fixtures in higher representative teams which included Scott Burkinshaw being named in the Australian Country side for a third time.

Another highlight during the season was Lisarow Ourimbah’s youngster, Alicia Bates receiving a Sixers WBBL contract which was a fantastic achievement at just 17 years of age.

The success of Central Coast cricket both as teams and individuals can be attributed in part to the investment the CCCA has made into the local Academy. This investment includes the establishment of Taylor Park as the headquarters for the Academy.

A big congratulations to new Zone Academy Coach, Alex Patterson and his coaches and support staff on the work they have done with talented players from Under 11’s through to Under 18’s. In his first season in his role Alex, having taken over from Glenn Rowlands, had to overcome a number of challenges but his enthusiasm and dedication to the role ensured that the Academy program was a success.

Another significant milestone was achieved during the year with the announcement that the Central Coast will have their own Cricket NSW Female Academy in 2020/21. This is a boost for female cricket on the coast and should increase the opportunities available for our girls. Geoff Drury has been appointed the inaugural Female Academy Coach.

The season started with the return of the season launch. The cocktail function was held at Diggers @ The Entrance and was attended by approximately 100 club representatives and guests. The night saw MC Steve Allan introduce the CCCA sponsors as well as interview the men’s and women’s captains of each senior club to gain their thoughts for the season ahead.

The junior season launch was held at Central Coast Regional Sports Academy with approximately 100 junior players enjoying a number of activities throughout the evening which included the appearance of BBL players Greg West and Justin Avendano, as well as the Sixers Mascot.

Another new initiative saw the North vs South T20 Challenge for both men and women to launch the representative season. The fixture was played on 29 September at Adcock Park with teams selected from clubs as follows: South (Brisbane Water, Kincumber Avoca, Lisarow Ourimbah, Narara Wyoming, Southern Spirit & Terrigal Matcham) North (Northern Power, The Entrance, Warnervale & Wyong). It was an excellent day which was well attended with South winning both matches to claim the trophy.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid 19 Pandemic the Alan Davidson Medal and the Junior Awards nights were unable to be held. Not to be deterred though all the awards were announced via a virtual event which saw the presentation livestreamed via social media. Whilst not ideal, certainly a reasonable outcome. Congratulations to Scott Burkinshaw on winning the Alan Davidson Medal as the Central Coast’s Cricketer of the Year, whilst Nick Toohey was named Junior Cricketer of the Year.

The Central Coast Cricket Umpires Association (CCCUA) once again played an important role within the CCCA albeit the Association decided not to retain their affiliation with the CCCA for 2019/20. After much debate a formal Agreement was established between the CCCA and CCCUA for the supply of umpires which will be a positive step moving forward. The CCCA also offered to provide administrative support to the CCCUA utilising the resources provided by Cricket NSW. This is a similar situation to what is provided to Sydney Grade clubs. This offer was rejected by the CCCUA.

It was pleasing to note that umpiring numbers increased during the season with a number of new members on the back of two successful training courses held both prior and during the season.

9 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

A greater emphasis this year was on captains providing reports on the official umpires. The feedback provided in these reports is vital in the coaching of umpires and also gave the captains the opportunity to seek feedback from the Umpires Coach if warranted. An on-line form was designed for the completion of the reports with captains reminded on a weekly basis to fill the reports. The completion rates of these reports was close to 100%.

The Unaccredited Umpires Program continued in 2019/20. 12 persons consisting of junior and senior players and parents participated in the program which saw them appointed to Boys Youth matches on a Friday night as well as junior matches on Saturday morning. They also officiated junior and lower grade finals matches. The CCCA paid these umpires $50 per day for matches in which they officiated.

A number of the umpires completed the Umpires Training courses held prior to the season.

The Central Coast Cricket Veterans Association (CCVCA) was also once again affiliated with the CCCA and under the guidance of their President, Rob Grose, and his committee continues to grow. (Refer CCVCA Report – Page 26). The club is looking to expand to include Women’s Veteran’s Cricket next year.

With the growth of our Junior programs as well as the Veterans, Central Coast is now in a position to offer cricket from “womb to tomb” for both men and women.

As always facilities are an important part of Central Coast Cricket and this year 59 grounds were used for our senior and junior competitions, which included 11 turf wickets. With the competitions continuing to grow we are consistently working with council to access more fields for cricket. (Refer Competition & Ground Committees Report – Page 17),

2019/20 saw CCCA welcome a major sponsor in Diggers @ The Entrance. Diggers have been long term supporters of junior cricket on the coast and to have them increase their sponsorship to include the whole of CCCA is most appreciated and we look forward to continuing this partnership into the future.

We were also pleased to have Everything Sports, Star 104.5FM and Sports Coast Trophies & Embroidery as new partners to support the assistance provided by existing partners Kookaburra, National Storage – Berkeley Vale, Central Coast Leagues Club, Ourimbah RSL Club and Rebel.

Sponsorship is an important part of any sporting body whether it be a club or the Association and we are grateful for the support we received. It is important however that we continue to support those businesses which support us.

Country Cricket NSW continues to be a major financial support for the CCCA and we thank them for their continued support.

The CCCA again adopted the Cricket NSW’s “Local Country Cricket Associations Code of Conduct Procedures”. These procedures were introduced to ensure common procedures were in place throughout the State and gave clear direction to the types of offences and also level of offences

Overall player behaviour this year was satisfactory with 12 cases referred to the Code of Conduct Commissioner of which 3 cases were referred to the Judiciary. Thanks to John Jewiss for filling the role of Code of Conduct Commissioner and to those members who sat on the Judiciary.

One particular disciplinary case received national publicity which was dealt with satisfactorily by the CCCA Executive. The case involved Southern Spirit Women’s team failing adhere to a directive from the CCCA Executive in relation to the playing attire they wore during a competition match. Despite having a request to wear pink Hawaiian shirts rejected by both the Competition Committee and then the CCCA Executive the team opted to wear the shirt in any case.

10 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Subsequently the matter was addressed in terms of the CCCA Constitution and resolved to the satisfaction of the CCCA and the club, however prior to the conclusion of the matter, details of the “possible sanctions” were released to the media which created quite an outcry. A lot of the angst was caused by members/supporters who were not across the disciplinary process or the correct information surrounding the case and used social media as a medium to vent their frustrations.

At the end of the day however the CCCA Executive is empowered to make decisions and whether or not the decision is agreed with it is expected that the decision would be adhered to and if not then disciplinary action will be necessary. Without rules there is anarchy.

The CCCA and the clubs provide a great service to the community and at the same time understand their responsibilities to the community. This season the clubs undertook a number of projects but none more so than the support of the McGrath Foundation. Most clubs held a “Pink Stumps Day” to raise money for the McGrath Foundation with a particular shout to Northern Power, Southern Spirit and Warnervale who raised a combined amount over $20k from their Fundraising days. Well Done !!!

With drought ravaging the state at the beginning of the season the CCCA Executive discussed ways in which it could assist those associations in severely affected areas. The assistance would be way of developing a “sister relationship” with an association whereby the CCCA would look to provide financial and contra support. The association chosen was the Parkes Cricket Association and the CCCA has obtained 12 signed cricket bats which clubs will raffles to raise funds to kick off the association.

Social Media continues to be a concern with members taking to this platform to air their views which in some cases are not appropriate. The CCCA has a Social Media Policy in place and it is the responsibility of the clubs and their members to ensure that this policy is adhered to.

Following the end of the 2018/19 season it was decided that a review was required to be undertaken on the By-Laws and/or competition rules. The thorough review was undertaken with revised By-Laws and Playing Conditions approved and available for the 2019/20 season. Big thanks to Gary Kavanagh and Sharon Anderson for all their work in completing the review and also to Rob Cross who proof read the documents.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of all clubs and in 2019/20 they once again played an important role and we thank them for that. Congratulations to Ben Campbell, Kincumber Avoca who was named CCCA Volunteer of the Year, whilst Bob Newman was awarded the prestigious Malcolm Chalmers Award for his services to cricket on the Central Coast.

We thank everyone who filled a volunteer role, no matter how big or small during the year.

The CCCA continued to adopt Cricket Australia’s Policy for Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy and ensure that we provide a safe and inclusive environment for our young cricketers. Stuart Owen was appointed the CCCA Child Safety Officer and did a fantastic job in ensuring that the CCCA were meeting all requirements as per the policy.

2019/20 was also the year that the CCCA established the CCCA Hall of Fame. A committee was formed under the Chairmanship of Glenn Rowlands. (Refer Hall of Fame Report – Page 25)

Insurance for clubs, players and public liability was again taken out through Marsh Sport (formerly JLT Sport) as part of the National Cricket Program. The senior clubs were invoiced on a per team basis, whilst the juniors premiums were based on a per player basis with their premiums automatically deducted once the player had paid their registration fee via on-line payments.

The Association continued to use My Cricket as their membership database and competition management platform. Prior to the season both senior and juniors were migrated to the same CCCA site as opposed to having separate records. Player registration was completed on-line for both seniors and juniors whilst juniors were also required to pay registration via on-line payments. It was expected that the seniors would also be required to use on-line payments in 2019/20 but this was not the case. Unfortunately changes made by MyCricket to the registration process created significant issues at both club and association level due to the changes not functioning correctly, or alternatively creating

11 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

additional issues elsewhere. This created additional workload and angst for volunteers and despite these issues being raised at a higher level the issues were prevalent for much of the season.

Livescoring continued to be a major focus for Cricket Australia, with the CCCA continuing to make significant improvement in this area. Livescoring was compulsory for all 1st, 2nd Grade and U21 matches with the CCCA supplying clubs with tablets to enable this to be completed. All lower grades and juniors were encouraged to live score matches with the Club of the Year Program used to incentivise clubs. Whilst the uptake from lower grades was low it was pleasing to see that the majority of junior matches were live scored on a weekly basis.

Livescoring is proving to be popular with the supporters who were able to keep up to date with the scores of all matches via the CCCA website and the MyCricket App with the scores able to be viewed via a mobile device.

The Club of the Year program was expanded in 2019/20 to also include the CCCA juniors as well as a number of off-field requirements. This program was aimed at improving the clubs administrative practices by providing them with the opportunity to receive financial rewards up to $2,000.00 for meeting/exceeding their administrative expectations. This year $19,522.00 was returned to the clubs under this program. Congratulations to Kincumber Avoca on claiming the CCCA Club Administration Award.

Other Associations have requested details of this program with the view of implementing it within their association.

The CCCA’s exposure continues to grow whether it be by way of the three traditional forms (TV, Radio, Newspaper) or by social media. The media and marketing component of the Conference Administrators role is quite significant with communication seen as a very important part of Central Coast Cricket. A Media Kit was distributed to all media prior to the commencement of the season.

Following the purchase of a video camera at the beginning of the season the CCCA were able to expand their exposure by way of live streaming matches via the CCCA Facebook page which included both the T20 and Under 21’s Finals days. This was considered a success and will certainly be expanded next season.

A meeting was held late in the season with the franchise owners of “Last Man Standing (LMS)”. LMS has been providing the social cricket offering on the Central Coast for many years running both winter and summer competitions on Sunday’s. Both parties see opportunities for both the CCCA and LMS to work together to grow both men’s and women’s cricket on the coast.

The CCCA lost a number of great contributors to Central Coast Cricket during the year with the passing of Dave Frazer, Brian Rhodes and Dick Baxter. Cricket will be poorer for their loss.

With 2019/20 behind us, we look towards 2020/21 with plenty of optimism, albeit surrounded by uncertainty given the current Covid 19 Pandemic, as we look to continue to improve and grow Central Coast Cricket.

In closing I would like to thank all those people who have assisted me in in this role, in particular to Paul Deaves and the CCCA Executive, Club Officials Players and supporters. Also thanks to David Winiata for the excellent job he is doing in his role as Cricket Manager and for his passion and enthusiasm for Cricket on the Central Coast as well as for filling in the role of Conference Administrator since March.

See you in 2020/21.

Garry Burkinshaw Cricket NSW Conference Administrator – Central Coast

12 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Zone Administrator Report The Central Coast had another active season with the Zone represented at all nine Country Cricket/ Cricket NSW competitions including fielding a standalone team for the first time in the Women’s Regional Bash and also at the Female Under 13’s Championships.

The Central Coast hosted the Northern Pool of the Opens Men’s Country Championship, the first time a carnival had been held on the Coast for 10 years. We look forward to hosting additional carnivals in the future.

Unfortunately, due to the Bushfires in the South of the State the Bradman and Kookaburra Cup carnivals scheduled for Albury had to be cancelled.

After unprecedented success last year, the Central Coast this season had to be satisfied with winning the Colts carnival which was held in Bathurst, albeit the win came via a rescheduled match against Newcastle in Newcastle the Sunday following the carnival, after the corresponding fixture at the carnival was abandoned due to a dangerous pitch.

After winning the Hogg/Silver Trophy for the past two consecutive years, the Central Coast were unable to make it three in a row, with the cancellation of the Bradman & Kookaburra Cup impacting on our result.

Full credit must go to Zone Academy Coach, Alex Patterson, the coaches, support staff, parents and most importantly the players for the commitment to representative cricket.

The success from the carnivals continued with higher selection for many of our Central Coast players. Congratulations to all those that were picked to go onto play in the NSW Country sides and also to Scott Burkinshaw who was selected in the All Australian side which played a T20 match against the QLD Bulls Masters. He followed this up with selection in the All-Australian Merit side selected from the Australian Country Championship, it is the third time he has gained selection. During the carnival he also became the all-time leading taker for NSW Country and was named NSW Country Player of the Championships.

Country Cricket via Cricket NSW once again provided significant financial assistance to cover the expenses for their championships and we would like to thank them for this assistance. Also a thank you to Bruce Whitehouse (Cricket NSW Country Programs Manager) and Country Cricket Committee of Management for their support throughout the year.

Central Coast continue to set the bar high in representative cricket and we look forward to further success in 2020/21.

13 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Finance Committee Report The Central Coast Cricket Association (CCCA) once again had another successful year financially and remain in a strong financial position.

The books have been audited with the final result showing a profit of $5,638.46.

It should be noted that at a Special General Meeting in June 2020 it was moved for the Financial Year to end on 30 April instead of 31 May each year. The reasoning behind this was to enable Audited Financial Reports to be prepared well ahead of the AGM. Given this change the Financial Year for 2019/20 is for 11 months as opposed to the normal 12 months. In saying that though there is very minimal financial transactions in May in any case.

A summary of the financial statements is as follows (exc GST):

2020 2019 Difference Income 358,259 293,750 64,509 Cost of Goods Sold 79,361 79,361 Gross Profit 278,898 293,750 -14,852 Expenditure 273,260 323,255 49,995 Profit 5,638 -29,505 35,143

Items of interest: • Comparison with 2019 figures is difficult given that there were significant items last year which were accrued in 2017/18. • Cost of Goods Sold relate to the trading of cricket balls, which also attributed $81,902 to the sales.

A break-up of how the associations income is allocated is as follows (exc GST): Description Income Expenditure Surplus/ 2018/19 Deficiency Affiliation Fees – Club Fee 64,850 93,884 Honorarium 7,000 -18,000 Club of the Year 19,523 -10,655 Premiership Payments 4,750 -5,000 Finals Trophies 3,063 -5,036 Presentation Dinner 1,224 -9,858 Trophies 4,722 -3,914 Storage – Unit & Fagan Park 3,631 -2,358 Umpire Fees - Finals 10,680 -11,095 Season Launch 3,127 0 Printing & Stationery 2,536 -3,757 Accounting & Legal 4,400 -3,762 Computer / Internet Expenses 847 -1,949 Insurance Equipment 2,495 0 Umpire Accreditation Course 1,091 0 Competition Expenses 1,691 0 Repairs & Maintenance 1,110 0 Board/Meeting Expenses 1,339 73,229 (8,379) -504 Sponsorship 19,374 5,500 Alan Davidson Challenge Cup 800 -2,000 Club Championship 1,000 0 Umpire Fees - Unaccredited 8,430 -2,300 Development Expenses 2,272 0 Sponsorship Expenses 560 13,062 6,312 0 Miscellaneous 368 874 (506) +745

15 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

In addition to the above Country Cricket NSW paid the Zone Administrator an Honorarium of $9,500.00.

Affiliation Fees for Senior teams were reduced to $750/team (exc gst) for Seniors whilst the Junior Affiliation Fee remain unchanged at $50/team (exc gst). This reduction in Senior Fees was made with the understanding that on-line payments would be introduced for all senior payments which would see the Conference Administrator Fee ($20) deducted from each on-line registration fee paid. This did not eventuate and as such each club was invoiced on the basis of $20 per senior player. The Affiliation Fee for Women’s Teams was reduced to $535/team (inc GST) following the CCCA obtaining a Grant from the Australian Sports Foundation.

A total of $20,000 in Grants were received from World T20 Legacy Fund ($10,000), Central Coast Council ($5,000) and Australian Sports Foundation ($5,000), all for the purpose of developing and growing female cricket in the region.

The funds were disbursed as follows: Reduce Affiliation Fees – Women’s & Girls $ 3,250.00 Pay Women’s Insurance Fee $ 1,300.00 Provide Playing Kits for Girls Teams (x 5) $ 2,800.00 Youth Girls Competition (Note 1) $ 1,864.00 $ 9,214.00

The remaining balance of $10,786 has been held over to next season.

An Grant Application of $4,000 has been lodged with Central Coast Council as per the agreement following to sale of Cricket Memorabilia from the Museum. The approval of this was delayed due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.

Grants for Cricket NSW via NSW Country is quite significant and funds our Representative programs. We are very appreciative of their continued support.

There was a significant increase in sponsorship mainly through long term sponsor of CCCA Junior Cricket, Diggers @ The Entrance, extending their sponsorship to become major sponsor of the CCCA. Everything Sports and Sports Coast Trophies & Embroidery also became sponsors whilst the Kookaburra Cricket Ball rebate increased from $750 in 2018/19 to $5,874 in 2019/20 following the decision of the CCCA Executive offer to purchase cricket balls on behalf of the clubs. We appreciate the support of our partners which enables us to invest in programs to improve the CCCA.

All clubs paid their invoices within the approved repayment term. I would like to thank all the clubs for their diligence in ensuring all accounts were paid on time.

At the end of the financial year there were only two outstanding receivable totalling $6,700.00 being the final instalment from Diggers ($4,400) and the key deposit bond from Central Coast Council ($2,300). Both these accounts will be paid in due course. There were no Accounts Payable.

There was only one debt written off for $125 being an outstanding Junior Representative Fee from 2018/19.

In 2019/20 the CCCA installed Shelving for Storage Unit which cost $1,100.00 whilst a Video Camera costing $1,950 was also purchased to be used for Live Streaming of matches and for Coaching purposes. These purchases are included in the Balance Sheet.

As at 30 April 2020, the CCCA had cash reserves of $133,633.24, including $22,049.00 in the Zone Account, which is considered more than satisfactory to conduct their operations.

All taxation obligations have been met and financial records have been audited by the CCCA’s Auditor.

16 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Competition & Grounds Committee Report On behalf of the Competition Committee, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate all Clubs and Players for taking part in season 2019/20.

This season was one that suffered through drought, heat, bushfires and in the end a pandemic. Congratulations to those teams who were crowned Premiers, it’s a pity rain dampened many Grand Finals and of course Covid-19 wiping out the 1st and 2nd Grade deciders.

Congratulations to all of the individual award winners across both Senior & Junior competitions.

The 2019/20 season saw ten (10) clubs field a total 70 men’s teams to compete across eight senior grades with all ten clubs also fielding teams in the Under 21’s competition. The Women’s T20 competition continues to flourish with eleven teams from eight clubs competing in this competition.

At the beginning of the season, due to significant departure of senior players, Brisbane Water requested to be permitted to not field a 1st Grade. This request was approved by the CCCA Executive with the club fielding teams in 2nd, 4th, 6th & 7th Grade.

This decision resulted in a bye in the 1st Grade competition, which whilst not ideal was managed.

Prior to the season commencing the CCCA Executive, in consultation with the clubs made amendments to the competition structures in an attempt to reinvigorate the competition whilst at the same time streamline all competition structures.

The amendments included:

• 3rd Grade & below competitions would consist of one-day matches only • Two Day matches would be 80 overs per day, reduced from 90 overs • All one-day matches would be 40 overs per innings • Batting & Bowling bonus points would apply for 2nd innings of two day matches • Bonus point would apply in one-day matches

1st & 2nd Grade played a combination of 6 x two-day, 6 x one-day & 6 x T20 matches whilst 3rd – 8th Grade played 18 rounds of one-day matches. 7th & 8th Grade continued with the restriction placed on batters in that they had to retire once they reached 50 runs however could return once the last wicket has fallen and there are overs remaining. The Under 21’s competition saw each team scheduled to play 6 x T20 matches on Sunday’s

The Women’s T20 competition consisted of 18 x T20 matches with restrictions introduced which saw batters having to retire once they had faced 30 balls or reached 50 runs, whichever came first however the retired batters could return once the last wicket has fallen and there are overs remaining.

All competition saw finals expanded in 2019/20 to include four matches as opposed to three in previous season. The finals commenced with semi-finals (1 v 2 & 3 v 4) followed by a preliminary final (Loser 1 v 2 semi-final vs Winner 3 v 4 semi-final) and subsequently the Grand Final (Winner 1 v 2 semi-final vs Winner of Preliminary Final). With 1st & 2nd Grade Finals being two day matches their finals were scheduled over three weekends, whilst all other Grades were played over two weekends, Week 1, Semi Final (Saturday) and Preliminary Final (Sunday) whilst Week 2 saw the Grand Final scheduled for Saturday and a Reserve Day on Sunday. Due to the wet weather the Reserve Day was utilised. Given this structure the 1st & 2nd Grade Grand Finals were to be played the weekend following the completion of all other competitions however unfortunately due to the Covid 19 Pandemic the Grand Finals were cancelled on advice of Cricket NSW. There was no reserve date for these Grand Finals.

For 1st Grade there was a one-day final with the top two sides from the one-day competition playing off in the final. The final was held at Erina Oval with Lisarow Ourimbah defeating Warnervale.

The T20 competitions for both 1st Grade and Under 21’s consisted of a Finals Day with the top four sides playing off. The semi-finals used the format of 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 with the two winners playing off in the final straight after the semi-finals. The 1st Grade finals day was held at Harry Moore Oval with

17 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Kincumber Avoca defeating Lisarow Ourimbah in the final whilst on a rain affected Under 21’s finals day Kincumber Avoca defeated Southern Spirit at Col Gooley Field.

The 2019/20 junior season was highlighted by Central Coast Grammar School being able to field teams under their own banner, in the past the school has a part of Southern Spirit. This arrangement is a great step forward and one which may be adopted by other schools in the future. In saying that however the CCCA Executive is fully supportive of the existing clubs and this new arrangement was with the full support of Southern Spirit. The school entered five teams this year from U11’s (x 2) to U14’s.

This season there were 61 teams who participated in seven competitions across five age groups.

The Boys Youth competition continued to be the benchmark with six teams competing. The competition was open to boys and girls under the age of 16 with matches played on turf on Friday evenings (4.30pm start). If the turf wicket was unavailable due to wet weather the matches were able to be transferred to a synthetic wicket. There was a mixture of one-day (40 overs) and T20 matches across the season played under the same playing conditions as 3rd – 6th Grade senior competition. Following issues the previous year regarding light a playing condition was introduced whereby 50% of the overs would be bowled continuously from the same end following which time they would change ends and bowl the remaining 50% of overs. This was considered a success and reduced the playing time. Players who played in the Youth Competition were also able to play in the junior competition on Saturday.

All remaining competitions were played on Saturday mornings utilising the Cricket Australia junior formats. The Under 16’s & Under 14’s A & B – Stage 3; Under 13’s & Under 12 A & B’s – Stage 2.

Following on from issues the previous season the CCCA introduced a By-Law whereby there had to be a minimum of 12 teams in an age group before two competitions consisting of a minimum of six teams in each competition. Unfortunately as in previous season the competitive within the competitions was often compromised due to the lack of teams in various age groups. This issue will continue to be discussed with clubs especially with those clubs who have multiple teams in particular age groups.

All competitions were scheduled to play 18 rounds during the season and as with the seniors the finals were expanded in 2019/20 to include four matches played over two weekends as opposed to three in previous seasons. The finals commenced with semi-finals followed by a preliminary final and subsequently the Grand Final. Week 1 saw Semi Finals (1 v 2 & 3 v 4) played on Saturday and Preliminary Final (Loser 1 v 2 semi-final vs Winner 3 v 4 semi-final) on Sunday whilst Week 2 saw the Grand Final (Winner 1 v 2 semi-final vs Winner of Preliminary Final) scheduled for Saturday and a Reserve Day on Sunday.

The Under 11’s once again played non-competition cricket with 23 teams split into a North and South Division based on geographics.

The Girls Sixers League was also transferred to Saturday morning for the first time with the competition aimed at those girls who were further advanced than the Entry Level Programs but not yet ready for the Girls Youth League. This competition was a great success with five teams competing in the inaugural competition.

Both the Under 11’s and Girls Sixers League played under Stage 1 Format.

All ten clubs ran entry level programs and it was great to see the youngsters participating in Junior and Master Blaster competitions either on a Saturday morning or weekday evenings.

The goal to have a CCCA Girls Youth League competition to be held on Friday nights did not come to fruition however the Cricket NSW Cricket Manager was able to establish a four team girls competition played on Friday nights played over 12 rounds under the same rules at the Women’s T20 competition.

18 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

As always facilities are an important part of Central Coast Cricket and this year 59 grounds were used for our senior and junior competitions, which included 11 turf wickets. With the competitions continuing to grow we are consistently working with council to access more fields for cricket.

The council continued to invest in their facilities with drainage and irrigation works being completed at James Browne Oval, Kanwal Oval and Fagans Park, whilst new amenities buildings are being constructed at both Adcock Park and Don Small Oval. There was also a new synthetic wicket installed at Ourimbah Soccer Field.

The beginning of the season saw Council hold curators information day at Sohier Park. The idea of the session was to provide some basic details in relation to the preparation of turf wickets and also to provide the curators with a council staff member who they can contact to provide guidance and assistance. All club curators were present and was well received.

The turf wickets were installed at the Central Coast Regional Sport & Recreation Complex at Tuggerah prior to Christmas with the intention to play the T20 finals day and the 1st & 2nd Grade Grand Finals at the venue. Unfortunately weather put paid to the preparation of those wickets, and we will continue to work with Council to bring this venue into our competition next season.

An audit was completed on all CCCA cricket facilities to ascertain size, condition, amenities etc and will be a valuable tool moving forward.

Once again regular meetings were held with council whereby discussions included maintenance issues as well as possible facility improvements. We would like to thank David Norbury, Glenn Howe, Brendan Thew, Kim Moriarty, Jodi Clark, Maureen Wilson and their teams at Central Coast Council for their support during season and we look forward to continuing this relationship in 2020/21.

I would also like to thank the other members of the Competition & Grounds Committee, Sharon Anderson, Bob Archer, Trevor Allison and Jack Wilson for the time they have given and the work they have put in throughout the year. I would also like to acknowledge the CCCA Executive for their efforts.

Season 2020/21 will bring us many challenges as we will need to deal with reduced playing days available to us due to winter sports extending into October. The Committee and the Executive will work with Council to get access to as many playing days possible, and we may need to look at some additional playing days away from Saturday, or some competition format changes to allow us to get the season in.

Gary Kavanagh Competition & Grounds Committee Chairman

Representative Committee Another busy season of Representative Cricket on the Central Coast with 18 teams representing the Central Coast in both senior and juniors, male, female, boys and girls.

I was fortunate enough to chair an enthusiastic committee which included Trevor Allison, Chris Archer, Jo Cadman and Alex Patterson and I thank them for all their work during the season.

There was plenty of activity in the off-season, firstly with the Central Coast making the difficult decision to withdraw from the Sydney Grade T20 competition (Kingsgrove Cup). The inability of the best players to make themselves available for selection for all matches was a contributing factor in this decision. Following on from our decision the Sydney Grade competition made the decision to exclude all regional associations from the competition.

Also in the off-season, Cricket NSW conducted a review into all junior representative cricket with the goal to streamline the many junior representative competitions being held across the state.

As a result of the review the time honoured NSW DCA competition was dissolved and replaced by separate Youth Championship competitions for Metropolitan and NSW Country at U13, U14 & U15.

19 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Despite having U12 and U16 competitions in the Metropolitan, no such competitions were made available in the Country.

Cricket NSW staff held information nights to explain the rationale behind the decision to revamp the competitions, however despite this a lot of disenchantment amongst CCCA players and parents with many advising that they were considering playing representative cricket for a Sydney club. There main concern was around the level of competition as well as the amount of representative cricket available. The Metropolitan competitions played up to ten matches (predominantly one day matches) including finals whilst the Country Championships included 3 x one day matches and 4 x T20 (including a 3 day carnival) and no finals. The historic nature of the DCA competition was also a factor. Concerned that they may lose a significant number of players the CCCA introduced a rule whereby players would be unable to play their club cricket on the Central Coast and representative cricket in Sydney. In the end three players decided to play in Sydney.

Following the restructure, the CCCA Executive also determined not to continue to enter teams in IDCA competitions, which were non Cricket NSW competitions.

The Representative Season launched with the new North vs South T20 Challenge for both men and women.

It was a busy year on the hosting front with the Central Coast hosting the Men’s and Women’s Regional Bash as well the Northern Pool of the Men’s Open Country Cricket NSW Championship, the first time in 10 years they had held a Country Cricket NSW Carnival. In addition to this, matches for the U12’s as well as a match from each of the Youth Championships ages were held on the Coast with matches played at Col Gooley Field, Adcock Park, Duffy’s Rd, Sohier Park, Baker Park and Harry Moore Oval. Thanks to all the clubs for their support in hosting matches.

Success during this season was limited this year with the Colts team the only side to bring home a trophy albeit it must be noted that the Bradman and Kookaburra Cup carnivals were cancelled.

A highlight was the fielding of standalone Open Women’s and U13 girl’s teams for the first time with both teams acquitting themselves well.

The selection of coaches was again a difficult task and based on feedback received in previous years the preferred option was to appoint coaches who did not have a child in the team. The exception for this rule was for the January carnivals. It was pleasing to note that this was achieved for all but two teams (Open Men’s and U13 Youth Championship). This is a great example of the work being done to increase the quality of coaches on the Central Coast. All coaches of teams who compete in Country Cricket / Cricket NSW competitions are required to provide a report at the end of each carnival as well as an evaluation of all players and are provided with an honorarium.

As is the case most years the selection of the teams is a difficult process. A representative selection committee was established to select all the sides for the Country Cricket NSW carnivals.

Refer “Junior Representative Co-ordinators Report” below for a comprehensive report on Junior Representative Cricket.

Central Coast players again figured prominently in higher representative teams with 26 players achieving higher honours. Congratulations should be offered to Scott Burkinshaw who was selected in the All Australian side which played a T20 match against the QLD Bulls Masters. He followed this up with selection in the All-Australian Merit side selected from the Australian Country Championship, it is the third time he has gained selection. During the carnival he also became the all-time leading wicket taker for NSW Country and was named NSW Country Player of the Championships.

Congratulations also to Chris Archer and Tiegan Kavanagh who gained selection of NSW Country Men’s and Women’s team respectively that played in the Australian Country Championships in Toowoomba. Also to Ryan Fenning and Emily Cross who represented NSW in the and

Alisha Bates (18 Female), Grace Dignam (U18 Female), Daniel Thompson (U15 Male), and Harrison Townsend (U17 & U19 Male) who represented NSW Country at National Carnivals and also Nick Toohey who was selected in the Cricket Australia X1 that played in the Under 17 National Carnival.

For a full list of Representative Honours for 2019/20 refer to Page 80.

A comprehensive review of Representative Cricket is completed every year and feedback provided where necessary. Representative Cricket is an important part of Central Coast Cricket as we continue in our goal to be the best Zone in NSW both on and off the field.

Glenn Rowlands Chairman, Representative Cricket

Junior Representative Co-ordinators Report Summary On appointment as Junior Representative Cricket Co-ordinator mid July 2019, junior representative selections and competition format was already established. This season followed the revised new format of Cricket NSW Youth Championships and Greater Hunter Championship, where only one team per age group would compete.

The Junior Representative format for CCCA comprised of the following competitions and teams:- • Greater Hunter Championship U12’s • CNSW Youth Championship U13’s • CNSW Youth Championship U14’s • CNSW Youth Championship U15’s • Greater Hunter Championship U16’s • January Carnival teams o U11’s o U12’s o U13’s o U14’s o U15’s

In addition to the above the Central Coast also fielded teams in the Country Cricket NSW Carnivals for U16 Male (Bradman Cup), U14 Male (Kookaburra Cup) and U13, U15 & U18 Females.

The U12’s Greater Hunter Championship team won the competition. The U16’s decided not to continue in the competition due to the competition being so small.

At the End of Season awards individual awards were presented to the 3 CNSW Youth Championship (YC) teams as well as the U12’s Greater Hunter Championship team. Awards presented were for batting, bowling and spirit of cricket.

Overall the junior representative season could be considered a success given the major changes to the format. Given a better lead in to the 2020/21 season I expect that a smoother process will be encountered.

Junior Representative Competitions CNSW Youth Championships As the first year for this format to take place, it was decided to select 15 players for each rep team squad and then select the 13 players permitted to play in each game. The format comprised of a 3 day carnival (1 x limited over and 4 x T20), and 2 separate limited over games on following weekends. Limited over matches were 50 overs for U14 & U15 and 40 overs for U13.

After reviewing the competition with Academy Coach, Alex Pattinson and coaches for each team, the CCCA Executive has determined that future CNSW YC teams to be a 12 player squad only.

All three teams had variances of team players and squads due to either injury or prior commitments based on late notification of game dates.

21 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

One issue was a clash of dates with a prior existing non sanctioned Cricket tour in New Zealand. This affected the U14’s with several players affected. The CCCA Executive in consultation with the Academy Coach based on the new format and the clash of dates and commitment of players, concluded to increase squad numbers but restrict training of the players affected. It was an unusual circumstance that has led to enquire on all Central Coast non sanctioned events prior to any trials for CNSW Youth Championship competition. It was also determined that players would need to be able to commit to playing in the 3 day carnival to be eligible for selection in the squad.

Central Coast hosted one game in each age group. Grounds, umpires, match equipment and catering were co-ordinated for hosted games.

Greater Hunter Championships With no Youth Championships for the U12 and U16’s, Cricket NSW staff looked at establishing a “Greater Hunter Area” Competition involving sides from Central Coast, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter.

Due to the uncertainty around this competition and the delay in organising the Central Coast opted not to participate in the U16’s competition, rather focus on the Bradman Cup. They did however proceed with the U12’s.

The competition consisted of 3 x limited over matches (40 overs) plus 3 x T20 matches with a final between the top two teams for each format.

Central Coast were successful in winning both titles in a fantastic effort. Koby Smith was named Player of the Tournament.

Central Coast hosted several matches, including semi-finals and grand final. Grounds, umpires, match equipment and catering were co-ordinated for hosted games.

Despite the initial teething problems this competition was a great success and discussions have already commenced about having similar competitions for girls in 2020/21.

January Carnivals The January carnivals were once again a success with teams sent to Newcastle x 2, Ballina, Lismore and Maitland.

Formats for these competitions varied and given that are not designated Cricket NSW Carnivals the hosts were able to decide on whichever format they believed warranted.

These carnivals are very popular with both players and parents and offer a perfect development opportunity for players involved. The Central Coast’s criteria for these carnivals is participation ahead of results and the coaches should be commended for supporting these ideals.

Selections The scheduling of selection dates, venues and selectors had already been finalised for the 2019/20 season, however it can be confirmed that trials were held in April with 15 person YC squads selected for each YC team.

The YC coaches for this season were chosen with a revised specific criteria, after receiving expressions of interest. The criteria established was:-

1. Not be a related party to any junior player 2. If it’s not possible to find an unrelated party, to consider previous coaching experience and aim for a different age group from the related party 3. If 1 & 2 are not possible, consider those with expressions of interest to proceed to a coaching program

Selection dates, venues and selectors for the 20/21 season proposal accepted by the Rep Committee was:-

• Open net trial at the end of March. • Invitation centre wicket/trial game in late July – 22 players per age group. • Teams named at the start of August. • Players not selected to have first option for January carnival team selection • Teams start training mid August, gives each team 5 training sessions before going to YC. • 10 selectors all up, 2 different selectors for each age group. • Coaches named before the July trial.

However, to follow the lines of Cricket Australia & Cricket NSW guidelines to suspend all cricket in the immediate future due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, the proposed trials Junior Boys Rep Trials have been postponed until July, with a date to be confirmed.

At the beginning of the season it was determined to select the teams for the January Carnivals in November to allow greater emphasis on current seasons form which included club cricket. The CCCA Executive in consultation with Cricket NSW also determined that no player was permitted to play in more than two carnivals (i.e. YC, Bradman/Kookaburra Cup, January Carnivals).

All clubs were requested to nominate players from each age group who they considered should be considered for selection in the respective squads. It would be fair to say that some clubs gave greater attention to this than others which made selection difficult.

The Rep Committee nominated prospective coaches for each age group and gave them the 1st call to selections from the list of players nominated by clubs.

U11’s was the trickiest due to U11 club cricket being Milo cricket and not following the same format as to January Carnival cricket, so the criteria for selection for this team was they had to have played up an age group and/or played in representative cricket formats previously. Many of last years U11’s team were suitable for selection, so were able to be selected.

U12’s wanted the Greater Hunter Championship side to be given the opportunity to play in the January carnivals as a “reward” for playing CNSW sanctioned representative cricket. A few players were suitable for U11’s, and club selections were sent to the coaches to determine selection of the few spots available.

U13’s required more than half a team to be selected due to unavailability of the U13’s CNSW YC team. Nominations were also limited. U13’s were the hardest team to co-ordinate along with playing in a carnival that was the furthest away. They also had very limited training opportunities.

U14’s was a full selection due to most CNSW YC U14’s being selected for Kookaburra Cup.

U15’s required half a team selection due to Bradman Cup selections.

The Rep Committee will be discussing and debriefing on the lead up time, nominations and selection process for future January carnival teams. Overall, the initiative to help promote development in junior cricket through club performance was essentially a success.

The biggest issue was the lack of time to select the teams, training and to organize clothing in time. Also, the communication with clubs will require earlier communication incentives.

Representative Clothing Once the Greater Hunter Championships and CNSW Youth Championship teams were announced, the attire for each player was co-ordinated. Greater Hunter Championships were undergoing final details as to how the championship was to run and with what teams participating. Attire was CCCA white shirts and pants.

The CCCA white shirt was updated with sponsors logos and orders placed accordingly. Training attire was also made readily available for purchase.

23 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

During competition for U12’s, it was requested the colour rep training shirt be the players shirt, in which CCCA agreed. This was the preferred choice from the players.

CNSW Youth Championship teams were to organise any training clothing required. Players coloured clothing was supplied. The coloured players clothing comprised of coloured shirt and pants.

U16 were to have white players shirts and any training clothing required, however did not proceed into competition.

January carnival teams were offered white players shirts and training clothing. U11’s and U12’s requested to play in coloured training shirts, which was agreed. U14’s requested for players names on back of white players shirt, which was also agreed.

All clothing orders for all teams were placed in time for competition start, however January carnival teams had an extremely tight turnaround due to the late notification of team selection and early competition start dates.

All clothing orders were sent to CCCA accounts with a return of all individual invoices that were sent via email within 24 hrs of receipt of invoice.

Zone Academy Report This year’s Zone Academy was a great success, given the loss of Glenn Rowlands and the experience he brought to the game. It was wonderful to see new coaches take on lead roles. Ben Day played an integral role in coaching this year and should prove to be a great asset for Central Coast cricket in the future. Scott Burkinshaw had limited opportunities as a result of his own cricket commitments and travels, however, did a great job in coaching the U18 Colts team to success in winning the Country Championships.

The facilities at Taylor Park continued to provide a great training environment for our Junior Rep training programs. Unfortunately, this year we were unable to provide a turf wicket due to the lack of a groundsman.

Our Bradman Cup and Kookaburra Cup teams trained well and unfortunately were unable to compete at their respective carnivals due to the NSW Bush Fire Crisis.

Our Regional Academies struggled to adapt to the Youth Championships timeline. Next season should prove to be a greater success given Scott Burkinshaw and Ben Day’s availability, combined with the lessons learnt from this year.

We had multiple players represent at a State Challenge level this year, displaying exemplary talent from the Central Coast:

U19’s- Jake Hardy, Harrison Townsend and Ethan Short U17’s- Nick Toohey, Harrison Townsend, Karan Katli and Harry Channells U15’s- Tyler Searle, Bailey Lidgard and Daniel Thompson

We had the following players represent NSW Country at their respective National carnivals:

U15’s- Daniel Thompson U17’s-Harrison Townsend in the U17’s (Which he was the leading wicket taker)

Nick Toohey also went on to represent cricket Australia in the U16’s Cricket Australia side at the U17’s National Championships.

24 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

It has been a difficult season to measure success considering the loss of our Kookaburra and Bradman Cup Carnivals, however, I feel that Central Coast Cricket adapted as best they could, given the time frame given to change our programs. Next year will prove to be another challenging season with the current Covid-19 pandemic. However, I feel with the current coaches I believe we will be able to continue to provide a high standard of coaching for our athletes.

Alex Patterson Zone Academy Coach Code of Conduct Commissioner Report The NSW Country Cricket’s Association Code of Conduct Procedures were again adopted for the 2019/20 season. These gave clear direction to the types of offences and level of offences and this was well received by all umpires and clubs. Every club was very supportive and co-operative during my investigations.

There were twelve reports during the season of which seven included offences for dissent. Six of the reports came from the official umpires. I’d like to thank and congratulate the umpires for making the effort to submit these report as I believe it is important that we seek to eliminate all levels and forms of dissent.

All of the players reported were offered a prescribed sanction from which nine players accepted the sanction offered with three players opting to take the matter to the judiciary. At the judiciary all three players were found guilty however had their sanctions reduced.

Of the twelve players reported, three received suspension with the remainder reprimands.

There was one interesting case whereby a player was reported during a Boys Youth League match immediately before Christmas. This player also plays and was selected for a representative carnival in early January. Based on the offence a two match suspension was warranted however with the Youth League having three week break over Christmas and the guidelines stating that any suspension must be served in that competition the penalty would have seen him miss a total of ten matches including the Representative Carnival and four senior matches, a penalty that did not fit the crime. As such the penalty was amended to include a variety of suspensions including one representative match, two senior T20 matches and the two Youth League matches.

The major incident of the year involved a player in the 7th Grade Grand Final which saw breaches for both offences on and off the field. An eight match suspension was offered and accepted.

I would like to thank the umpires and the clubs for their support during the investigations and also to the Judiciary Panel members.

Hall of Fame Committee Report This year the board made a decision to introduce a Central Coast Cricket Hall of Fame.

This was formulated to celebrate our most decorated and revered players in the history of our game on the Coast. We formed a Hall of Fame committee made up of some very learned past cricket fraternity family in Greg Smith, Errol Smith, Rod Masters and Statistician extraordinaire Phil Dales.

We met on numerous occasions to formulate a criteria which was the following – • Played 15 years on the coast and • have to be retired for 5 years with exceptional reputation and • respect of their peers

25 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

We formed categories of our considered Hall of Fame players, (to include First class players that have to meet a specific criteria), to nominate an initial group of Hall of Famers for the Executive’s approval and also a list of players who could be considered for the Hall of Fame for future years.

It was certainly very disappointing that our Alan Davidson Medal night was postponed due to the Virus. We had what we thought was going to be a special segment of the night's celebrations with current senior and junior players to play a significant part in the presentation.

Hopefully we can announce the six inaugural inductees at our 2020-21 season launch as we feel such a special innovation to our cricket community deserves a special audience.

So stay tuned and watch this space for the new announcement of the first group to be inducted into the Central Coast Cricket Hall of Fame.

Child Safety Officers Report Season 2019 / 2020 saw the Central Coast Cricket Association implement a best practice framework supporting children and young people, their parents and guardians including coaches and managers alike. In providing a safe and supportive environment the Central Coast Cricket Association undertook;

• Endorse Australian Cricket’s Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy • Appointment of a CCCA Child Safety Officer • Implement WWWC checks • Actively monitoring compliance with a WWWC Member Register including updates at monthly Board Meetings • Registration and verification of members with the Kids Guardian • Online & face to face training for Child Safety Officer, Coaches, Managers and Team Officials • Individual acknowledgment from Members “Code of Behaviour” • Individual acknowledgment from Members “Looking After Our Kids” • Actively encouraging and empowering people if they “See Something, Say Something”

Whilst there were no reported incidents in 2019 / 2020 the Central Coast Cricket Association remains vigilant in providing a safe environment for children and young people in a supportive consistent manner.

Stuart Owen CCCA Child Safety Officer

Veterans Cricket Association Report The Central Coast Veterans Cricket Association (CCVCA), known as the Cyclones, provides opportunities and playing experiences for all age groups from Over 50s to Over 70s. Many of our players are playing cricket for the first time, while many others continue to play regular ‘Saturday’ competition cricket thus prolonging their careers. Veterans cricket gives all players the opportunity to practise and compete with friends thus providing opportunities to improve physical fitness as well as social and mental wellbeing.

The 2019/2020 was perhaps a season like no other. Initially affected by drought the season took a turn with games being cancelled due to the threat of bushfires and the associated smoke. The back end of the season was completely shut down due to COVID-19. Only now are we starting to make tentative plans about a return to training and playing for the 2020/2021 season. In between all of this we did manage to play lots of great cricket.

26 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

All teams played against various regional teams as outlined below:

Over 50s: Newcastle, Hunter Taverners, Mid North Coast, Tamworth and New England.

Over 60s: Southern Highlands, Port Jackson, Hunter Taverners, Western Wildfires, Mid North Coast, Quirindi, Tamworth and Coffs Harbour.

Over 67s/70s: Hunter Taverners, New England, Tamworth, Armidale, Mid North Coast, Western Wildfires and Southern Highlands.

Two Cyclones Over 50s teams competed in the State Championships held at Orange in early February. Our Division 1 Side made the Grand Final and were just beaten by Port Jackson. There were a number of outstanding individual efforts by all players. It was our best performance in 4 tournaments and given the very high standard of Division 1 was very pleasing for our region. Mark Austin did a great job as and John Jewiss managed the team well.

The Division 2 Side finished last but all three games went to the last over so it could have gone either way for us if we had a bit more luck. Tony Wilson led the side well.

Twelve players were selected to represent NSW in the National Championships held in Perth. Division 1 reps were Mark Austin and Phillip Melville. The team finished 3rd. In Division 2 Brian Crutcher, Andrew Emery and John Toohey played in the winning team. In Division 3 we had two teams Geoff Patterson was the captain of the Wombats who were runners up. Tony Wilson, John Jewiss, Mark Bury, Paul Wright, Peter Paterson and Simon Paine played in the Emus who came 5th. From these Championships Phil Melville was selected to play for Australia in the World Cup in South Africa. Unfortunately, only 3 games were played before the Cup was cancelled because of COVID-19. Congratulations Phil.

Four of our players were selected to represent NSW to tour NZ in January for 3 games. These players were Mark Austin, Mark Bury, Brian Crutcher and Andrew Emery.

To top off a very busy season for the 50s the Central Coast entered two teams (Green and Yellow) in the inaugural Over 50 Doug Walters Cup Competition competing against Newcastle, Hunter Taveners, Mid North Coast, Tamworth and New England. The Competition was of an extremely high standard which was eventually won by Tamworth with Green finishing second and Yellow third.

We also had the inaugural Mark Bury Shield Game between the two sides which was won by Tony Wilson’s Green Team.

The Cyclones Over 60s entered 2 teams in the State Championships held at Maitland in October. Both teams did extremely well with Greig Buscombe’s team defeating Port Jackson in the final. Greig Buscombe and Peter Best represented NSW in the National Championships held in Adelaide in November.

Four of our players, Greig Buscombe, Peter Best, Tony Formby and Keith Vallis were selected to represent VCNSW against the touring English team at Wyong on 26th November. Congratulations. In the 67s season Cyclones played in 4 Carnivals with the Central Coast hosting one in early December. Other carnivals were held in Newcastle, Armidale and Tamworth.

The Over 70s played in the State Championships in Port Macquarie and 4 players were selected to play in the Australian Championships in Albury/Wodonga.

27 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

The 2019/20 season Cyclones Players of the Year recipients were:

Over 50s-Tony Wilson Over 60s-Geoff Traill Club Man-David Paul

A final highlight of the year was securing Rogers Park at Woy Woy as our permanent home ground. Up until now we have played our home games at various grounds around the coast. Thank you to Garry Burkinshaw, David Winiata and the Central Coast Council for your assistance in securing this venue for us.

We extend our appreciations to all of our members, players, supporters and sponsors for their efforts, time and support throughout the 2019-20 season. We particularly thank the Central Coast Cricket Association Board, Garry Burkinshaw (Conference Administrator – Central Coast), David Winiata who took over from Garry upon his resignation, the Central Coast District Cricket Clubs and the Central Coast Umpires Association for their support and assistance.

Despite our advancing years, the CCVCA continues to enjoy the fun, participation, competitiveness, and camaraderie that Veterans Cricket has to offer.

“Cricketers never get old, you get old because you stop playing cricket.”

Community Cricket – Cricket NSW Report Season 2019/20 This season was a standout season for Central Coast cricket with many successes to celebrate. Garry Burkinshaw, Matt Williams, Sharyn Beck and David Winiata all combining to support the CCCA and local clubs for a fantastic season of cricket.

Cricket has become relevant again on the Central Coast with the local community engaging better than ever before.

The season has had some challenges along the way as well. This included fires, smoke, rain/flooding and then Covid-19. Luckily Central Coast cricket were able to get majority of the season completed through these challenging times.

Also saw the departure of Garry Burkinshaw from the Conference Administration role. Garry has been instrumental in making cricket relevant for all Central Coast locals. Garry has left Central Coast cricket in a good position to continue to be leaders of cricket in NSW.

Cricket NSW (CNSW) Casual staff have also been increased to support the role out of cricket programs in schools.

4 new casual staff members were onboarded throughout the season.

Cricket in Central Coast Schools School engagement has been the main focus for the past season. Great success has been achieved. 86% of schools on the Central Coast have received a cricket program of some sort.

Unofficially, 16194 school students were involved with cricket. This means 1 in 3 school students on the Central Coast were playing cricket of some sort. These large numbers have been driven by our Participation Officer, Matt Williams. Matt has developed strong connections with majority of schools across the coast. And this will allow for more opportunity for our clubs to successfully recruit new juniors.

28 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

This season also saw the CCCA come on board and provide a $2500 payment towards rolling out more cricket programs in schools. CNSW matched this amount which allowed all 10 clubs to choose a school of their choice to target through the recruitment period.

Next season CNSW will look to complete a similar program with the CCCA and clubs and if possible, roll out more school programs.

Coming into the new season, there is a real opportunity to grow our junior club numbers through the continued success of school engagement.

Cricket in Central Coast Clubs This season has been one of the best engaged seasons for all Central Coast Cricket Clubs. This year saw an 11th club enter the Central Coast Cricket Competition when Central Coast Grammar School were allowed to enter their own teams with great success. This included their U14B team making the Grand Final.

All 11 clubs embraced the Entry Level Programs of Junior & Master Blasters. This entry level is very important to the longevity of clubs as the next lot of senior cricket players will eventually come from these programs.

A special mention to Kincumber Avoca and Terrigal Matcham for their extremely well ran programs. Also need to mention the joint venture of Brisbane Water, Narara Wyoming Juniors and Southern Spirit, bringing their blasters together to make a great experience.

Junior & Senior total teams were steady from the previous year with the standout being our female participation.

The introduction of the Girls Youth League (Under 16’s) which saw 4 new teams prevail. Standalone Girls Sixers League that played Saturday mornings with 5 teams involved and the successful Women’s T20 Comp which saw 11 teams enter.

The new season looks to be even a bigger year for female cricket on the coast.

CNSW Support of Local Representative Cricket & Grade Cricket CNSW were able to give back to our Local cricket hero’s by being involved in both Representative Cricket and Grade cricket finals. This involved advertising, music and MC to make their games feel like the Big Bash games.

The events covered included: 1. North vs South Pre Season Game 2. T20 First Grade & U21’s Grand Finals 3. Regional Bash Games

CNSW aim to continue this support and increase the amount of games we are involved with including junior games.

Grants This season saw a few grant opportunities come to life. Grants like T20 Legacy Fund, Grassroot Cricket Fund, Local Central Coast Council Grants and Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund support many projects across all clubs.

Grassroots Fund was able to provide up to $2500 top clubs for the purchase of club equipment with many clubs taking up the new helmet option. The Entrance CC, Narara Wyoming Junior CC & Terrigal Matcham CC were able to raise funds for their net rebuilds/refurbishments.

The season ahead will be an important time for clubs to be active in sourcing grant opportunities.

29 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Next Season I’m really looking forward to another successful season for Central Coast Cricket.

Central Coast Cricket does not occur if it’s not for our volunteers, organisations, charities and school teachers. They are the lifeblood of grassroots and we should always remember cricket is around and alive because of the tireless hours they put into the game. Community Cricket is here to serve and support these people.

David Winiata CNSW Cricket Manager - Central Coast

Central Coast Cricket Umpires Association Report Overview There were a few challengers this season where at times we were down on numbers and we had a few 1st Grade matches that we could only appoint one umpire. This was unfortunate but I have to thank the clubs and players who supported our officiating umpires in these matches which was very much appreciated.

Unfortunately our number 1 umpire from the previous season, James Figallo left our ranks to pursue opportunities of umpiring in the Sydney Grade competition which left a hole for the CCCUA not having James’ wealth of experience at our meetings and training that he provided our umpires.

During the season Ben Treloar from the NSWCUSA attended one of our monthly meetings to conduct a training session for our umpires in an endeavour to improve the umpiring on the Central Coast which was also well received by our members.

Before the start of the season the NSWCUSA ran an umpires course which was well attended and out of that course we were able to get 12 new umpires come on board with 9 of those new umpires officiating at different times throughout the season with 2 of those umpires, Jonty Webb and Greg Burton making their 1st Grade debuts. The majority of these umpires weren’t able to commit to too many matches due to their playing commitments but I expect that the CCCUA will benefit in the future. Some of these umpires were able to officiate in the Youth League competition on a Friday afternoon and junior competitions on a Saturday morning which enabled them to gain some experience in the middle and also officiate in the CCCA Finals series.

One pleasing factor for the season was that I was able to talk to several 1st Grade captains and players throughout the season and the majority had stated that they believed that the umpiring was the best it has ever been which shows that the CCCUA are getting results in the discussions that we are having at our monthly meetings around training.

Finals Appointments This season’s finals series was severely affected by the weather and COVID 19. Congratulations to David Grainger on being selected to officiate in his first 1st Grade final, even though not one ball was bowled. Congratulations to all umpires who braved the weather to take part in the finals series. Two-Day Grand Finals:

First Grade: Mark Ronson & David Grainger Second Grade: John Davidson & Tom Maurer Lower Grade Grand Finals (One-Day format): Third Grade: Hamish Millen & Geoff Peebles Fourth Grade: Tony Booth & Jonty Webb Fifth Grade: Warren Jackson & Alex Brown Sixth Grade: Mal Emerson & Michael Wheeler Seventh Grade: Joe Dowden Women’s Grand Final (T20 format): Bill Colbran

The First Grade Grand Final was shaping up to be a very interesting match between the two top ranked teams. Due to the social distancing restriction from COVID 19, the match did not progress, and Kincumber Avoca were declared premiers over Lisarow Ourimbah.

30 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Limited Over Final: This season, the only one-day limited over final was played in First Grade. Bill Colbran & Mark Ronson officiated this match. Lisarow Ourimbah defeated Warnervale.

T20 & U21 Finals: The First Grade T20 finals were played on Australia Day long weekend with a carnival atmosphere. Tom Maurer & David Grainger officiated the Grand Final match. Kincumber Avoca defeated Lisarow Ourimbah.

The U21 T20 finals were played on Sunday 23rd February with a carnival atmosphere. Mark Ronson & Hamish Millen officiated the Grand Final match. Kincumber Avoca defeated Southern Spirit.

Umpire Numbers It was very pleasing to see our numbers increase this season, particularly off the back of several seasons where we saw our numbers fall dramatically. Membership for the season rose to 29, with 24 of those active across the season. This enabled us to quite frequently have members in 2nd Grade each week and down into 3rd Grade.

Executive and Office Bearers The Executive of the Central Coast Cricket Umpires’ Association for season 2019-2020 were:

President: Elisabeth Houston Secretary: Bill Colbran Treasurer: David Grainger

This season saw a rather significant change to the Executive, with Don Maisey standing down after over 10 years as President and James Figallo standing down as Secretary. I want to thank both Don and James for their commitment and work to promote the game of cricket and umpiring on the coast. During the season, Don also stood down as Zone Representative for the NSWCUSA. I would like to thank both Elisabeth and Bill for their time and effort as they both performed extremely well in their first season in their respective roles. It is always important to have members willing to stand up and invest their time to the successful running of the association on the coast. It would be impossible for it to continue otherwise!

Education and Development We held two separate Laws of Cricket training courses, both led by NSWCUSA facilitators. The first of these was held in the off season on the weekend of 27th & 28th July. The course was well attended with over 30 participants. From this weekend we had 6 new members join our Association. The second of the Laws of Cricket courses was held over a series of week-night sessions in November, which again was well attended. From this course we had a further 4 people become members of the Association. I would like to thank the Central Coast Cricket Association for endorsing and advertising the Laws of Cricket courses amongst all affiliated clubs on the coast. At each monthly meeting there is a session on the Laws of Cricket and local Playing Conditions. In addition to this, we had Ben Treloar join us at our December meeting where we explored and developed our field craft techniques.

Key Highlights The one standout this year has been the rise in umpire numbers, with active members rising from 17 the season before to 24 this season. The completion of the two Laws of Cricket courses, advertising and endorsement by the Central Coast Cricket Association and the recruiting activities of CCCUA members has led to this result.

The Phil Kirby Trophy for Umpire of the Year is voted on by all 1st Grade Captains. This year the winner was John Davidson.

We thank Specsavers Central Coast for the ongoing sponsorship this season. This has continued to help the Association financially and increased our profile on the coast.

I would like to personally thank Darren Goodger and Troy Penman for their support before and during the season.

31 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Central Coast Zone Umpires Report – David Grainger Another season on the Central Coast has drawn to a close and it is with pleasure I submit my report for the season. This season has been busy like most, with our grade competition again consisting of two-day, one-day limited over, and T20 matches. A separate U21 competition using T20 rules was played on Sundays. This year saw marked decrease in junior representative fixtures on the Central Coast and the rise of the women’s competition, played under T20 rules. The end of the season, like most, ended abruptly due to the ever-increasing risk of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines. This prevented both 1st & 2nd Grade Grand Finals from being played.

Bill Colbran CCCUA Secretary

Female Cricket The off-season saw the Executive in consultation with Cricket NSW Cricket Manager undertake a review of female cricket on the Central Coast Whilst the Women’s T20 competition continued to grow the lack of a sustainable girls competition is an area which is missing within the CCCA and one in which the Executive identified as needing to be addressed.

In 2019, there were 275 girls who played in designated school competitions whether that be primary or secondary schools, yet only 60 girls played in CCCA competitions. Reasons for this may include:

• Don’t like cricket, day off school • Hard ball • No appropriate female competitions available

Following the review it was determined that females would be required to play in female competitions, unless an exemption is granted by the Competition Committee to play in the boys competition. If an exemption is granted the females would be required to play in their own age group. i.e. the condition whereby girls could play overage was removed.

An information night was held in August for the female players and parents to discuss the new arrangements which was met with mixed feedback.

The Sixers Girls competition was subsequently moved from Monday evenings to Saturday morning and to be suitable for any players who new to the game or not considered ready to play in the Youth Competition. Five teams nominated to play in this competition.

A female Youth League would be held on Friday nights. Unfortunately the support from the clubs to this competitions prevented a CCCA competition to be held. Despite this Cricket NSW Cricket Manager was determined to follow through on this initiative and with financial support via a Grant commenced a four team competition played on Friday nights played over 12 rounds under the same rules at the Women’s T20 competition.

Both girls competitions were well received with 73 girls participating in these competitions which is a fantastic result and one which will look to be expanded on next year.

The Women’s competition again showed continued improvement with 11 teams playing in the 2019/20 season which is an increase on the 8 teams who played the previous season. Another pleasing factor was that all clubs with the exception of Brisbane Water and Wyong fielding teams with Northern Power (3) and Warnervale (2) fielding multiple teams.

The competition continued to be in T20 format with 8 on-field players (players could share games meaning up to 16 players could play per match) permitted. The season was also extended to be 18 rounds and a four team finals series.

In order to increase participation levels a new playing condition was introduced whereby batters had to retire after facing 30 balls or scoring 50 runs whichever was achieved first. The batters were able to return to the crease if all other batters were dismissed. This rule was well received across the competition.

32 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

A highlight of the competition was the increased level of skill as well as an increase in the number of younger female players many of whom had progressed from the juniors.

Another highlight was the expansion of representative cricket available to Central Coast Female players in 2019/20.

The CCCA again fielded teams in the Under 15 & Under 18’s Country Championship whilst for the first time an Under 13 side competed in the newly formed Under 13’s Country Championship.

In another first Central Coast fielded a standalone female opens representative side who competed in the inaugural NSW Women’s Regional Bash knockout competition.

Whilst success in these competitions was limited the pleasing fact was that all players who represented the Central Coast played in a CCCA female competition, being the only Zone who could make this claim.

2020/21 season will also represent a significant development for Central Coast Female Cricket with the establishment of a standalone Cricket NSW Female Academy. Previously Central Coast players were part of a combined Newcastle/Central Coast Academy however lobbying by the CCCA Executive over a number of years has resulted in their own Academy being approved. Geoff Drury has been appointed Female Zone Academy Coach.

The CCCA is one of the few female cricket regions in the country who is able to provide a complete female cricket pathway from Early Entry Programs (i.e. blasters) through to elite female cricket. (see below diagram).

No female cricket report would be complete without mentioning the magnificent achievement of Alisha Bates, who amongst her many representative accolades in 2019/20 was the awarding of a Sydney Sixers WBBL contract. Whilst Alisha did not get to play in a WBBL match (she did play in the practice matches) the experience gained from training and travelling with the likes of and will no doubt hold her in good stead for the future. Alisha can be found plying her trade for her beloved Lisarow Ourimbah club on a Saturday afternoon.

33 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Life Membership 2019/20 saw two great ambassadors of Central Coast Cricket with Life Membership of the Central Coast Cricket Association. There are currently 31 Life Members.

Life Member Inductee – Glenn Rowlands As a player Glenn commenced senior cricket with the Narara-Wyoming club in the season of 1971/72 and went onto accumulate a total of 266 matches (16th most matches of any player). During his playing career, he was distinguished as one of greatest players to play for Narara and was considered a figurehead for the club.

His playing statistics for NWCC are extremely impressive, boosted by the fact that he played a large majority of his career in First Grade: • 9523 runs • 13 centuries • 58 fifties • 189 catches • Multiple major award winner across numerous seasons

Regarding his contributions in an administrative capacity with NWCC, his record is also exemplary having been a committee member, selector, 1st Grade captain, Vice President and Life Member (2018);

In addition to this, Glenn has served as Club Coach since 2010/11, producing strong results across all grades. Representative Cricket - Seniors The Central Coast had another successful representative season albeit not reaching the heights of the previous two seasons when they won the Hogg Silver Shield on both occasions.

Once the Central Coast fielded a team in all Cricket NSW Country Championships and Cricket NSW Regional Bash competitions. There was plenty of activity in the off-season as the firstly the Central Coast made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Sydney Grade T20 competition (Kingsgrove Cup). The inability of the best players to make themselves available for selection for all matches was a contributing factor in this decision. Following on from our decision the Sydney Grade competition made the decision to exclude all regional associations from the competition.

The Central Coast’s sole success came with the Colts team who retained the title they won last season.

Other highlights included the Central Coast fielding teams in the Women’s Regional Bash and also the Under 13’s Female Country Championships.

Hogg Silver Trophy After claiming the Hogg Silver trophy for the past two seasons the Central Coast were unable to make it a three peat in 2019/20

The Hogg Silver Trophy is awarded to the best performing Zone across the six competitions contest under the Country Cricket NSW Banner.

Points are awarded based on the finishing positions in each competition with 10 points awarded to the winner right through to 1 point for finishing eighth.

After a good performance in the Opens and winning the Colts Carnival the Central Coast were well placed heading into the Bradman and Kookaburra Cup Carnivals, both of which the Central Coast were the defending champions. Unfortunately, both these carnivals had to be cancelled which left the Central Coast in sixth position.

Plan B Regional Bash - Men Central Coast Rush finished third in their pool in season 2019/20 after winning the Regional Bash last year.

In the first game, the Rush had a strong 27 run victory over the Hunter Hitmen at Sohier Park. Batting first, the Rush finished their innings at 7-138 with Steve McCabe scoring 25 through the middle of the innings to keep the momentum going after strong start from Tony Cornwell, 22, and Adam Taylor, 20. A well drilled fielding performances from the Rush secured the victory restricting the Hitmen to 9-111 from their 20 overs. Brendan Charlton, Dylan Robertson and Adam Taylor the best with the ball all taking two wickets.

In Game Two, the Rush lost a super over classic after Newcastle Blasters and the Rush finishing on 136. Ryan Fenning was the best with the bat with 59* while Dylan Robertson was the best with the ball with 1/3. In the super over, the Rush batted first and could only make 6 runs which the Blasters got off the fourth ball of their over.

Game Three came along and the mental fatigue from the super over classic transferred over with the Rush comfortably beat by the Lake Mac Attack. Steve McCabe and Blair Lindsay both scored 30 while Lindsay was also best with the ball with 3 wickets.

Women’s Cricket Bash It was a historic moment for Central Coast women when they fielded an open representative team when they took on Newcastle in the Women’s Cricket Bash.

Central Coast women put up a gallant performance before suffering an 8 wicket loss.

Fielding a team made up of players who participate in Central Coast competitions the side found the experience of a Newcastle side consisting of a significant number of players who play in Sydney a bit too tough on the day.

Winning the toss and batting the Central Coast suffered an early setback with leading batter, Ella Merritt caught in the 1st over.

38 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Rochelle Davis and Rebecca Callan set about restoring the innings before Davis was dismissed for 7 with the score on 17.

16 year old, Grace Dignam joined Callan and the Central Coast experienced their best spell of the game taking the score to 42 in the 8th over before Callan was bowled for 8. Dignam was looking good before being run out not long after for 13.

Jacquelyn Chandler (15) and Sophie Shelley (9) also showed good form with the bat however upon their dismissal the innings ended quickly with the last four wickets falling for four runs, including a further three run outs as the side looked for quick runs.

With 89 runs on the board the Central Coast were confident of victory and when Shelley bowled Newcastle Blasters skipper, Kirsten Smith for 6 confidence was high.

An excellent long range run out by Sally Oman further lifted the spirit with the score at 2/26. At this point however Newcastle lifted the tempo and aided by dropped catches were able to pass the Central Coast's score in the 14th over without the loss of any further wickets.

Whilst the result did not go there way the experienced gained was invaluable and they can also be comforted by the fact that they were the only team that fielded players who participated in their local competition. Well done ladies.

Opens The Central Coast were unable to reach a third successive final at the Country Championships held on the Central Coast.

The first game the Central Coast had a fantastic bowling performances and restricted Central North with the ball to claim a nine run victory.

In game two, it was a nail biting affair with the Central Coast claiming a 4 run win over North Coast while they were defending 123 which will go down as one of the best victories by the Central Coast.

Game three saw the Central Coast take on arch rivals Newcastle with the winner progressing through to the final. However, the Coast came up against a rampant batting display from the Newcastle side and were defeated by 140 runs ending their championships.

Colts The Central Coast defended the 2019/20 Country Cricket NSW Colts Championships which were played at Bathurst in December.

All eight Zones played in the carnival and were greeted with oppressive heat and smoke for the duration of the carnival which were supposed to consist of three one day/50 over matches and two x T20 matches.

40 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

Central Coast opened the carnival with a win over Greater Illawarra however Day Two was interrupted by smoke which called off both Game Two and Game Three and also meant a reduced Game Four. Game Five was practically a mini final between both the Central Coast and Newcastle however a dangerous pitch meant the game had to be rescheduled for the Sunday, to be played at Newcastle.

Match Report The Central Coast has retained the McDonalds Country Cricket NSW Colts Trophy after a carnival in Bathurst which was marred by poor air quality and an unplayable pitch which saw matches cancelled and the match between Central Coast and Newcastle rescheduled for Newcastle’s Ron Hill Oval today. All eight Zones played in the carnival which were to consist of three one day/50 over matches and two x T20 matches.

The Central Coast opened the carnival in excellent form defeating Greater Illawarra and in doing so also gaining a bonus point to take an early lead in the Carnival.

Their match against Riverina on day 2 was abandoned within 20 overs when smoke from the bushfires made the air quality unsuitable for play.

Day 3 had two x T20 matches scheduled with the first game against ACT Southern Districts cancelled without a ball being bowled due to the continuing smoke issue. Thankfully the smoke haze lifted and the Round 4 match against Western was able to be played.

Unfortunately, Central Coast batsmen were still in a haze as they were dismissed for just 77 and despite a gallant performance by the bowlers the Coast side were unable to get the win.

This left them needing to defeat Newcastle on the final day to retain the title. Unfortunately the wicket at Bathurst was not to the same standard as the anticipation for this match up and the umpires were forced to abandon the game after 25 overs due to a dangerous wicket.

With the match virtually a final, Cricket NSW officials made the unprecedented decision to reschedule the match between the two sides to the Sunday in Newcastle. This is believed to be the first time such a decision had been made.

Central Coast won the toss in the final and led by a magnificent century to captain Broc Hardy they were able to post 8/276 from their 50 overs. Hardy scored 116 from 108 balls and received excellent support from Tom Owen 51, Harry Channells 28 and Lachlan Cork 23.

Defending 276, a well disciplined bowling display restricted the Newcastle batting lineup after they had put on 49 for the opening wicket. Karan Katli was the most successful bowler with 4/20 off 5 overs, however Jack Swainston did the damage through the middle with 3/17 off 6 overs whilst the performances of Lachlan Cork 1/26 off 8 overs, Kaleb Daley 1/16 off 6 overs and Harrison Townsend 0/24 off 10 overs should not be understated.

Final Table: Central Coast 13, North Coastal 11, Western 9, Newcastle 9, Greater Illawarra 9, ACT Southern Districts 7, Central Northern 5, Riverina 3

North vs South Challenge The Representative Season launched with the new North vs South T20 Challenge for both men and women.

Women’s In the Women’s match, batting first the North struggled against tight bowling from the South side and despite Shannon Liddle and Crystal Osborne putting on 18 for the first wicket they were never really able to get any momentum through their innings. A late flurry from Jacinta Crawford, 18 enabled the North to finish their 20 overs with 77 runs on the board.

All South bowlers bowled well with seven of the nine bowlers used picking up a wicket.

45 Central Coast Cricket Association Inc. ABN 61015119391 Annual Report 2019/20

In reply, South got off to the perfect start and aided by some dropped catches Alisha Bates, 28 & Ella Merritt 25 were able to put on 51 for the first wicket. Merritt in particular was very impressive finding the boundary on four occasions.

From this point on the South side were able to coast to victory with Sophie Shelley 16 and Ebony Wright 21 also making valuable contributions.

Crawford was the pick of the North bowlers taking 4/23 off her four overs.

Men’s The highly anticipated men’s match failed to live up to expectations with the South side recording a comfortable six wicket win.

Batting first the North side were on the back foot immediately when Tony Cornwell was run out by a direct hit from Ryan Fenning off the third ball of the innings.

Things did not improve from there with 5 North batsmen back in the shed before the end of the sixth over as first Matt Sunshine and then Blair Lindsay did the damage.

Ben Gillies (28) and Kaleb Daley (21) were able to steady the ship putting on a partnership of 54 runs however their departure saw the innings finish quickly with the side bowled out for 104 runs in the 18th over.

Sunshine, Lindsay and Matt Jones were the most successful bowlers taking two wickets apiece.

South’s opening batsmen Chris Sheppeard and Ben Cohen made their intentions known immediately picking up early boundaries before Sheppeard was dismissed for 22 in just the third over.

Cohen, last years Plan B Regional Bash Player of the Final, hit two sixes in his innings of 22, whilst Dylan Robertson was equally as impressive with the bat finishing with a well compiled 30. Lindsay made a late unbeaten cameo of 20, which included three fours and a six as the South side got home with six overs to spare.

Representative Cricket - Juniors Central Coast were once again very well represented at Junior Representative level with three teams competing in the Cricket NSW Country Youth Championships, one in the Greater Hunter Area Competition, and five teams played in the annual carnivals at Lismore, Ballina, Maitland and Newcastle x 2.

The highlight was the performance of the Under 12 side who claimed the inaugural Greater Hunter Area title by winning both the T20 and one-day competition. A fantastic performance by the team led by Stuart Owen and Michael Wheeler. Congratulations also to Koby Smith who was named Player of the Competition.

Unfortunately, they were the only team to reach the finals, however all players represented the Central Coast with pride and their attitude ensured that the Central Coast were displayed in the correct manner.

Match Report – One Day Final The Central Coast has won the inaugural 2019-20 Greater Hunter Under 12 Representative Competition.

Central Coast were the strong favourites in the final, only dropping one match (last week) during the season proper, which just happened to be against their Hunter Valley opponents.

Hunter Valley won the toss and batted. They got the worst start possible, to be in deep trouble at 8/26. A minor recovery saw Hunter Valley total 56 in the 33rd over. Central Coast lost an early wicket but a great 2nd wicket partnership from Raj Sharma (21 no) & Koby Smith (31 no) saw Central Coast cruise to victory.

A brief presentation followed and medallions and shields were presented to the Central Coast Team. Koby Smith was awarded the Player of the Competition after very strong performances with the bat and the WK gloves (picture below).

Malcolm Chalmers Award – Services to Central Coast Cricket Bob Newman was awarded the Malcolm Chalmers Award as an acknowledgement for his services to Central Coast Cricket.

Until he stepped aside for medical reasons at the conclusion of last season, Bob Newman was the backbone of Veterans cricket on the Central Coast for many years. As club president he was the driving force behind enveloping and encouraging the expansion of cricket for seniors at a local, state and national level.

On numerous occasions he would not only organise fixtures, but would open the amenities block, organise the tea, open the batting and organise the local team. In addition to being a great organiser he is a gifted cricketer, with a number of up and coming veteran cricketers voicing the refrain “I want to bat as well as Bobby Newman”. Bobby is a legend in veterans cricket circles, admired and respected as an administrator and especially as a player, at local, state and national levels.

Bob also assisted greatly in getting the over 50s up and running on the Central Coast.

Bob is a Life Member of The Entrance District Cricket Club, where he held many committee roles over many seasons where he played 295 games. Bob has also been a Vice President of NSW Veterans Cricket and has represented NSW in the top Division and played for NSW Country against England in the 60s Division.
