Mrs. Husband’s For Your Consideration

Today you may have noticed that the school flag has been lowered or that many staff and students wore an orange shirt on Monday, May 31st. Out of respect, and in recognition of the tragic discovery of the unmarked burial of Indigenous children on the grounds of the former Residential School, all schools in School District 43 are joining with the Government of and the Province of in lowering the Canadian flag to half-mast beginning, Monday, May 31st.

News about events like this impact us each very differently. If your child needs to talk with someone, please contact our school counsellor, Allie Diep at [email protected] or our Indigenous Youth Worker, Ryan Williams at [email protected] so we can provide support.

June is Indigenous Peoples Month and there is a significant opportunity for us all to learn and strengthen our allyship of indigenous people and indigenous communities.

We have learned new skills and coped with restrictions and developed new habits. Some of them will likely result in some positive changes, such as staying home when ill and better hand hygiene and thankfully many of them will eventually fade away (social distancing). For now, all health orders are still in effect. We are so incredibly proud of our school community. Staff and students worked together as a team to do things differently and honour the many restrictions. Despite the challenges, everyone has had a positive and cooperative attitude and done their best. Our explorations teachers have gone from room to room with their supplies creating engaging work with limited materials. As a school, we are so grateful for the support of the PAC who purchased outdoor sports equipment so that students’ breaks were active. One of the positives of COVID is that kids played actively together in their learning group. Football, four square, badminton, , badminton and teether ball are a few of the many options kids had. While we do not know what September will look like yet, we are hopeful that things will be more normal. In the interim we have learned that we are a resilient, supportive community who can adjust to any changes that we are presented with. School structure 21/22 Despite the uncertainty of what school will look like in September we need to make plans. We are expecting to hear more details from the Ministry of Education by the end of June. As we have learned, things can change. Next year Montgomery our school enrollment is predicted to be 480 students, with 20 advisory classes which is an ideal size for a . Purple Team 5 English classes Green Team 2 Montessori/ 3 English classes Blue Team 5 Late French Classes Red Team 5 English classes Next year we will have more grade 7/8 classes as our enrollment shifts. This means that there will be some changes to team assignments for teachers. We would like to say thank you and best wishes to the following staff for their important role in making this a positive year despite very challenging circumstances. Mr. Magistrale …………………Mr. Mag is retiring!

Mr. Mag arrived to Montgomery Middle as it transitioned from a Jr. Secondary to a middle school for grades 7-9. The year was 2003 and over the proceeding 18 years, Mr. Mag became a name.

Montgomery has the biggest middle school technology education spaces in the district. Mr. Mag taught students design work in the drafting room, metal work in the metal room and built many wood gum ball machines, CD shelving units (when CDs were a thing) and planes. There are countless projects that sit proudly in many homes. Each one of them represent a students’ journey of developing their self-confidence while exploring and developing new talents.

Mr. Mag spent countless hours before and after school helping students with their projects. His kind helpful nature is what so many students comment on. It takes a very special person to teach 22-24 students to use machinery and power tools.

This year, Mr. Magistrale has been on leave, and he has decided that it is time to retire and focus on his and himself. We want to wish him the very best in his retirement. If you have a story or well wishes that you would like to share with Mr. Magistrale, please email [email protected] so we can help create a special thank you in this remote context. ______

Moving or New Neighbours? Please tell us if; • you are planning to move to another area within our school district • You are changing districts all together • you know of new neighbours who have recently purchased/ rented a home in your area and will soon be moving in, then a kind reminder to them to enroll at their local school would help us as we build our enrolment projections.

CANADA’S CENSUS Why support the census? https://census.gc.ca/index-eng.htm

The #census is a valuable tool for understanding Canadians across the country and providing the right services for each neighbourhood. Check out the #2021Census Community Supporter Toolkit: https://bit.ly/3iXqfDR

CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE THE CENSUS ONLINE

Census information is vital for planning programs and services at the national, provincial, territorial and local levels. Data are used by organizations, businesses, municipalities, governments and Indigenous communities across Canada. The census counts every person in Canada and collects basic information about age, sex at birth, gender, official languages and family relationships. The long-form questionnaire gathers further details about income, education, religion, ethnic origins, Indigenous identity and languages, and more. The census is one of the only national sources of data for people living in Indigenous communities and provides key information about all Indigenous people living across Canada.

How do census data help my community? Knowing how many people live in a geographic area and having basic information about them helps organizations and communities plan, develop and expand programs, services and infrastructure. Census data help determine whether your community is, • Growing: Plan new roads, transit, water infrastructure and emergency services • Young: Predict where new schools or daycare spaces are needed • Aging: Estimate the need for health services and programs for seniors • Multicultural: Create or expand language programs

Your efforts to help us promote the benefits of the census will increase the reach of key messages communicated through a variety of channels, including television, radio, print, social media and the Internet. By partnering with us, you will increase the participation of your community in the 2021 Census.
