VOL. XLII ISSUE-APRIL 2018

Dear colleagues, Our Quality Improvement Projects, as a means to achieving operational excellence through employee engagement, have been encouraging and gathering momentum. Employee participation across levels, at all locations , is a visible cultural change. The reduction in cost and increase in efficiency because of a QIP is, more often than not, incremental. The real impact is enthusiasm and commitment to one's work place, which we need to sustain. Recently, the first ever Rescue Room in Sukinda valley was inaugurated at our Mahagiri Mines. This is yet another pioneering step, in line with our commitment to underground mining of chrome ore. We are grateful to Directorate General of Mines Safety for the guidance in establishing the Rescue Room, which has facilities to respond to many unforeseen eventualities in mines of the locality. With best wishes,

Smoke hood Flame sealing arrangement

To reduce furnace shutdown due to hydraulic hose failure at CCP-1. CCP-I(48 MVA closed furnace) furnace electrode seal ring arrangement provided by the OEM at the Smoke Hood was not effective and was causing arcing with cooling shield. To control the breakdowns and production loss due to arcing, seal rings were removed from position. After removal of seal ring sometimes flame from furnace was going up through gap between electrode and smoke hood opening and thus causing failure of hydraulic hoses of electrode hoist. To control this different ideas like providing fire retardant sleeve and fire retardant blanket etc. were implemented but the desired result was not achieved. Finally the OEM supplied seal ring was modified by fixing insulation material and fitted in same position to close the gap between electrode and smoke hood opening. By this modification flame approaching to the level of hydraulic hoses is controlled significantly and no failure of hose since four months.

Erosion Area Paste Fines

To enhance the life of CS Ladle spout at CCP-1 Cast Steel ladles are in use for collection of liquid metal & slag during tapping process of Furnace. The ladles are placed in a cascading manner to allow the flow of liquid melt from one ladle to other through spout. The liquid melt also passes through spout of the ladle during lip pouring. Due to passage of high temperature liquid melt, the end portion of spout gets eroded and ladle availability for tapping process is affected. To increase the life of the ladle spout which ensures the availability of ladles for tapping process and reduces the cost of maintenance, spout end portion was extended by welding MS Plate with anchoring and filled carbon paste fines. Castable layer was given over the carbon paste to allow backing and to withstand high temperature. By this modification the life of ladle spout increased from 5 heats to 8 heats on an average.
